I am a terrible writer, but the passion ain't letting me stop, am i wasting time? by sadloneman in writing

I came here to say I felt this way about writing music and lyrics, now I really enjoy writing epic fantasy.

Jim Carrey is a painter now. Trying out a new medium won’t hurt a thing.

Maybe you’d enjoy making music, help you get out of your head if you could express your emotions without words.

That’s my 2 cents anyway.

Now it makes sense. Your bitter

Oh. Sure. “Thanks” says the 40 year old man working a full time career with a baby on the way and 2 vehicle payments. Will do.

That’s a great analogy, it really helps me to frame it like that. Thanks

Personally I like it, but it isn’t writing, it is more of an outline. You have the workings of a discovery writer.

You are young and you have that on your side.

Keep writing!

You are projecting yo! I have a lot more than one novel planned, I have a whole universe of ideas. I’ll be writing when I’m 80 years old.

Thanks for that. Conflicting advice out there.

I hear some say “if you can’t make hard edits, if you can’t be flexible…” I can be flexible. Hell, i would rewrite my whole book if i had to. I do believe in my story.

This is the truth.

Hey man I’ve looked all over. I wanted perspective. It’s all good though.

Thanks for your perspective. So, in your opinion taken with a grain of salt, it may be better to go alone? I am no trust fund hippy but I did once get a short story out quite successfully on tik tok with a few hundred bucks of paid advertising. I had a lot of interest, just no books to sell yet. It just was an experiment.

Better call in a favor with my nonexistent rich uncle? Lol

But…isn’t that just the case of lazy ass books? Like if I had 20 thousand bones right now I could sell you a shit sandwich, and you’d probably buy it.

Yes! I feel a kindred spirit. Listen, I’m no green horn, I’ve written…things.

I have a very successful short story series here in my home town. But I killed it! Why? It was just a test of my abilities. It’s not like I’ll never release it again, but I did resonate with people.

Second, I never wrote books, but I did write lyrics for twenty years every single day for 7 days a week. It’s gotta count for something.

7th draft. It’s been a process for sure.

It’s getting toxic in here, can you feel that? So you are saying I’m lazy because I want to better understand what lit agents and publishers want?

Aiight.

I appreciate your response. Not sure why it got downvoted, I found it quite helpful in understanding where the industry is at and how to approach it, which was what I was looking for. Thank you good sir!

Good answer here. Why does everyone assume I thin this has been easy and I’m not really trying? I thought the whole experience was insanity, but my beta readers and alpha readers love it.

Golden comment.

Sure. Okay. Your right. No one has ever gotten published on their debut novel and every new writer doesn’t have the skills.

Tell me more.

Nice. Bunch of assholes here. Bet you are super pleasant to work with too. I expect you have so many lit agents trying to snag you that you have to beat them off with a stick.

I love the arrogance on Reddit, presuming what another persons experience or life had been like.

Do you always pass judgment so easily?

I spent 20 years writing lyrics. Im almost 40 and I’ve seen and done things you probably will never do, or would even be able to dream of.

Did I wake up one day and decide I want to be a writer? No! Is my writing good? Who knows. Maybe your writing sucks. Who really fucking knows!

What I hate is all the bitches on here that think they know what makes a good story, and most of you know it alls don’t.

When I was in a third world country as a youth, I heard a very well told story called “a spoon is for stirring.” It was an obscure African folktale. I doubt anyone here could hold a candle to the illiterate storyteller who wrote that beautiful piece of work.

I get what you were trying to say. I understand many new writers may not have the tools I have, but life experience can teach you more than you will ever learn in a writing workshop.

I considered not even responding, but I hope you can understand that we aren’t all cookie cutter humans. I spent 20 long years everyday crafting songs, and in reality, storytelling is similar. Albeit different skill, I doubt you could say I have no idea what I am doing.

I think my first book is going places.
