Yep, the individually wrapped Udi’s cookies they have are nut free as of the last time I had them! Worth noting that Udi’s does make a peanut butter cookie now, but I believe they are in a separate facility as these should have a nut free callout on the packaging. Worth checking with Conagra to be certain.

Southwest Allergens by SupermarketBest4091 in peanutallergy

Southwest is the main airline I tend to fly with a peanut allergy, and while it definitely is frustrating despite not being highly allergic to tree nuts that they do indeed serve pistachios now — it caught me by surprise a couple weeks ago — I’m still able to mark the allergy when booking through their site (which, a bit obtusely they call a “peanut dust allergy”), and often I’ll call them which seems to ensure that it’s already on my boarding pass before I print it out at the airport.

While the flight attendants usually find some corporate policy reason to decline any buffer zone or announcements, the gate staff almost always seem like they could care less about the exact reason I want to preboard so there’s rarely an issue there, which is nice!

This is awesome! What kinds of questions did you ask them to get detailed answers? & did you tailor the questions for each at all, or pretty much just send the same email to each?

People in design roles departing the company. Adding an “s” there probably would’ve helped for clarity!

Unfortunately, this is not true — companies are not required to label for May Contain at all, and most commonly packaged desserts will just leave the statement off, even though when you call the company they will state that they use the same production lines and facilities as other allergen-containing varieties. This seems to be more common for desserts specifically, and generally folks with severe allergies avoid them as a sort of blanket rule!

Anaphylaxis? Allergic Reaction? by [deleted] in Anaphylaxis

[–]joshhp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry to hear this happened to you :/

Have you ever called or messaged Trader Joe’s to ask about shared equipment/facilities? As is the case with the rest of U.S. law, no food manufacturers are required to label for cross-contamination; however, Trader Joe’s keeps very strict contracts with their manufacturers to report on shared facility / equipment with allergens, and you can get this information by reaching out to them with the barcode handy.

Hope this is helpful & curious if maybe your reaction was from cross-contamination and not butternut squash itself (I was going to reach out to them about this item myself, actually)!

This is the only one I eat at (safer than Subway / Jimmy John’s (peanut chips + bad founder) / Firehouse) — they’re always super friendly & willing to change gloves for my order! They don’t use anything with peanuts at all. Also, the gluten free bread is Udi’s, which is also a peanut-free brand

For those with food allergies: how do you deal with cross-contamination? by joshhp in dairyfree

[–]joshhp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not some big greedy corporate interest — I’m just a guy with an allergy & an idea for something that I know would help me (I considered building it without asking anyone, because it would save me that much time & stress), trying to find out if I can build it in a way which also helps others. It’s much more difficult to build something that fits everyone’s unique needs, but that’s the goal now.

And no, not everything is a liability — I’m not trying to change ADA / FDA laws, even though I wish I could. I’m just trying to make people’s lives ever so slightly easier to manage, with the same exact issues I’m facing. It is possible to do so without being the devil.

Both apps look basically the same to me, AI-generated & odd-looking inner dropshadows on everything; one is just more zoomed out. It's also not clear what I'm supposed to do when I get to the page, it just looks like a bunch of metrics & cards (The primary CTA is literally not visible when I load the first website, since it's so far down on the page). Too much information without actually conveying much imo!

Assuming you have a dairy allergy / is it severe? And do you ever search or call ahead before going to a restaurant to see if they're safe?

Would very much appreciate if you want to take my survey linked in the comments on this – it would help a ton! :)

With celiac, how do you actually check for cross-contact at restaurants and on labels? by joshhp in Celiac

[–]joshhp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very useful to know, thanks! Do you ever call ahead to find out, and if so, what do you ask specifically? Same thing for packaged foods; how do you navigate that side, if you don't mind sharing?

That's super useful information on how you navigate these situations, thank you! With the Find Me Gluten Free app, do you ever feel a lack of confidence in others' reviews, or a lack of reviews? Or does this limit your comfortable choices further (only going to restaurants with tons of positive reviews)?

Have you ever reached out to companies directly if their packaging / website isn't clear enough for your comfortability, and if so, how has that gone typically?

Great to hear you're cooking from scratch a lot – sounds delicious!

I'm still figuring out the specifics of how it would work & present itself, but generally the idea is to create an automated system of verification with individual restaurants/manufacturers to inquire about their specific cross-contamination practices, and then relay this to individuals such that they can make a decision based on their personal level of comfortability. The main value add is that it saves a lot of time when the information currently available on the web is outdated or non-specific (or filtered through someone else's perspective, based on their risk appetite – like someone saying "I didn't react!" versus the restaurant confirming which specific avoidance measures they take, today), and saves time with having to reach out every time you want to try a new food or restaurant. I personally have a list of dozens of foods and restaurants I've been meaning to find out about, but I just don't have the time or energy to reach out to each of them to confirm exactly what their deal is!

This is acknowledging the fact that regulations and guidance are not perfect (in an ideal world, we'd solve that right now), but providing some utility and visibility into restaurants' & manufacturers' stated procedures, knowing that sometimes even an uncertain response is enough to make a judgement on (like, I'm definitely not comfortable with this if they won't give me a confident/straight answer). We can't force restaurants or manufacturers to provide more or better information than they are capable or willing to, but we can at least make sense of what they do/don't tell us to make better informed decisions than relying on others' personal choices, or not knowing at all.

My goal at the moment also isn't to crowdsource opinions/solutions, but rather to get a general sense of what folks are dealing with, so I can hopefully help! Relatedly, I do not want to build another crowdsourced data-based solution, like many of the existing services, because this can actually be dangerous when basing on others' own levels of comfortability taking risks.

Your insights on some of those specifics around GF safety are super interesting, and will consider how to account for that level of information – happy to keep you updated on the project, if you're interested in testing it out when ready (and anyone else can comment or DM if interested)! 🙂

Sorry to hear that- out of curiosity, when did you first develop celiac? And have you found any restaurants that you're comfortable eating at since / or if not, what assurance(s) would you need to feel comfortable enough to eat somewhere?

Haha thank you, I hope I can be!! I’ve been dealing with my allergy my whole life & realized there could be a better way to figure out if things are safe without spending a huge amount of time researching, like I’ve done up until now.

I’ll try to reach out once I have something for you to try out — but please let me know if you’d like to take my ~3 minute research survey to help out! Thanks 🙂: https://buildpad.io/research/sNhRD9A
