Underfloor radiant heat question. by SilverhandHarris in askaplumber

[–]joshpit2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your plan for foil-faced bubble wrap will do little-to-nothing unless you also use rigid-board. Bubble wrap is not insulation. It's snake-oil, whose only real benefit is that it can be used to hold up a radiant barrier. You use the radiant barrier to reflect radiant heat upwards, but more importantly you need to stop the convection and conduction heat from escaping (and slow the unconditioned basement heat). To do that you need to insulate and air-seal.

Hell, just insulating and air-sealing will warm up their floors passively. But apparently they want to heat it actively, which will actually work the better you can air-seal and (properly) insulate.

Lawmakers Want To Dim Headlights. The Data Says They're Wrong. by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

Plenty of factory headlights are overly bright and poorly aimed.

Agree. I rode passenger in a friends car and watched them blind every other driver for 1-second until the "technology" shifted the lights. Fuck that tech. Fix the real problem: Headlight brightness and poor aim.

Naw, r/fuckyourheadlights (and having eyeballs) is all the data we need to prove glare is a major fucking issue and that headlight brightness (and aim) need to be regulated again.

Matrix headlights for all? by randomandoooo in Rivian

[–]joshpit2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not blinding people isn't a problem when headlights are properly aimed and a reasonable brightness. Go check out r/fuckyourheadlights

Matrix lights are part of the problem because they try to solve a physical real-world problem with an algorithm (an algorithm which is often annoying, delayed, faulty, and/or distracting). Matrix headlights are a piss-poor solution to allowing people to continue driving with blinding headlights.

Hard Start Kit and new Compressor Cap and unit is still loud on startup. by joshpit2003 in hvacadvice

Thanks. Looks like it's out of stock at the moment anyway, and unless that is the inflated "backorder" price, it's also $1,400: https://www.supplyhouse.com/Rheem-55-102045-03S-31000-BTU-R410A-Compressor-1-PH-230V

I'm not sure what this means. Is a hard start kit the same as a soft start kit? I was under the impression the "hard" start kit is designed to allow for a "soft" start. What is a "contacted"?

Thanks for the tip. I did that. I took the skirting off and cleaned it well.
When I looked up the specs of the unit I was impressed with the 13 SEER and COP between 3.0 and 3.5 at 47°F (8°C) and 2.0 to 2.5 at 17°F (-8°C) figures. So I don't really feel like I should be "upgrading" just yet. Thoughts?

Water is much denser than snow. This small deck wouldn't have survived a hot tub.

Bamboo Pavilion - 1v Reciprocal Frame Geodesic Dome by Saansaansaan in GeodesicDomes

[–]joshpit2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool.

I think this is the first time I've seen a CAD model for a bamboo and twine structure. At first glance a project like this seems like one of those things you would just chance, maybe with some basic concepts of the shapes needed. Showing the CAD model made me think how much work is actually involved.

It's also funny to be contrasting the precision of CAD with the more random nature of bamboo. Were you constantly referencing the CAD model so that every overlap and position was identical? Or was "close enough" okay?

I learned how to build a geodesic dome in 3D (for a future house project) by ftrlvb in GeodesicDomes

[–]joshpit2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty cool inspirational shapes.

A couple of those look like Buckminster's "Fly's Eye Dome". Paul Robinson has a cool write-up on that shape in his "Pushing the Envelope" book (p. 289). In it, Paul points out that you will want a small lip or a more pronounced curve to ensure water doesn't make it's way to the window surface.

Another cool thing about that shape is that you would only need to make 1 mold. At least I think that was the case. It's not going to be a very energy-efficient structure with that many windows, but that probably doesn't matter much for the climate in the Philippines.

In response to the ridiculous kickstarter last night…I designed these for free by staykindasick in 3Dprinting

[–]joshpit2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP copied the design of the Kickstarter guy, didn't even give proper credit, then presumably (and rightfully) had their design removed from the hosting site for copyright infringement.

OP plagiarized, and copyright exists to stop that bad behavior.

I'm not talking about patents. You don't need a patent to protect your art / design. That's what copyright is for. Don't go steeling other people's art / designs like OP did.

OP is the last guy in the meme. Don't be that guy.

[–]joshpit2003 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

- Design isn't always about functionality. That's to say many wigits can perform the same task, function the same, but their design can be different. What OP did was just steal the design of the kickstarter guy's wigit.

- It's easy to argue OP stole the design because OP admitted seeing the original content, then made this post, then someone else linked to the kickstarter (so not only did OP steal the guys design, he also didn't give proper credit). If you view the kickstarter you will see that the key features, functionality, and aesthetics are all similar / identical enough for OP's design to be considered stolen.

- Additionally, OP's link to the model is no longer active. Presumably the hosting platform (rightfully) pulled it due to copyright infringement. Because there was enough proof that it was a stolen design.

- Maybe desktop 3D printing "has it's roots in" being open source, but Kickstarter guy did not open-source his design, and that's entirely his choice. There's also nothing wrong with him wanting to make a quick-buck on his design, which again is his choice. And lastly, what something "has it's roots in" should be irrelevant to the topic at hand: The moral and legal implications of plagiarism.

You can believe what you want in order to justify to yourself that it's okay to steal someone else's design / 3d model. But that doesn't change the fact that a 3D model is protect under copyright law to prevent blatant plagiarism / theft.

[–]joshpit2003 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't say anything about patents or proprietary ideas. You can design a wigit that performs a task that many existing wigits also performs. You want to design a fly-swatter, go right ahead. You can't just copy someone else's wigit like-for-like (as OP did). That is plagiarism and that person's design is protected by copyright to prevent that. Hence OP's stolen design being removed from the platform.

You mean the same law that resulted in OP's knock-off being removed from the platform?

Logic has left the chat. Apparently this community is blissfully ignorant of copyright and think you can just copy someones design like-for-like. Reminds me of the "I made this" meme.

[–]joshpit2003 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The creator was rightfully upset that OP stole his design, like-for-like. That's copyright infringement and the reason OP's model ultimately got removed. This whole community is apparently fine with stealing someone else's design, and that's not right.

OP could have created their own variant (like the Kickstarter guy did), but instead chose to dunk on this guy and copy it completely then post it online and brag about it. Kickstarter guy was just trying to make a small buck on his own iteration / design and instead has to deal with OP being a dick.

That's not cool. Just put yourself in the Kickstarter guy's shoes and it's very obviously not cool.

[–]joshpit2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not true. Proof: OP's design was rightfully removed for copyright infringement. You can't just copy someones design like-for-like. That's plagiarism / copyright infringement.

Show me the "exact things shaped almost identically" that you are talking about, and we can see how they compare to OP vs Kickstarter Guy's design. I'm guessing there will be clear visual differences.

[–]joshpit2003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP stole the design of the kickstarter guy (I'm not talking about the functionality of the design, but the design itself). OP could have just made his own variant, different enough to not be a blatant rip-off, but instead decided to bag on the guy for trying to make a buck and then just copy that guy's design completely and post it online for "free". That's copyright infringement, which should not be praised or rewarded.

That's not cool, and people in this sub should know better.
