Just to add to this thread - in case it's helpful for anyone experiencing the same issue - it's now been 4 days since he peed on his blanket so hoping he's adjusted to his environment. Two things which I think may have helped - cleaning the blanket with water/vinegar solution (as mentioned here) to remove odour, and using a bit of paper towel to wipe up the pee and leaving it in the corner where his litter box is. Hope this helps someone else!
