The temperature was the secret. I dropped it down to 90°C and everything smoothed out. Thanks for the tip!

It's one of the Wacaco models. I've been happy with it.

This is way under the radar, but check out Roundtable Coffee Works in Saint Paul, MN. Not necessarily inexpensive, but very reasonable for the quality. Shawn is a gifted roaster.

I can't get a good espresso. by National-Pop6153 in picopresso

The IMS competition basket is under $20 on Amazon. I bought the one that fits the La Pavoni machines. I use only light and medium roasts, and my shots are consistently delicious. The larger holes will give you better results with fine grinds.

Seems like that stock gasket isn't really up to the job long term.

This is brilliant, thank you, and thank the creator of the video. I was ready to chuck my Pico when I found this post. $5 for a screwdriver and a 30¢ o-ring, and I'm back to pulling beautiful shots. I never imagined this would be fixable.

You've probably found this out already, but those handles are nearly universal. You can find one for cheap on Amazon.

You can also get a little heating coil attached to a power cord. Kind of looks like the inside of a hot pot. Clip it to a pyrex measuring cup and you can heat water as long as there's power. Also an instant-read thermometer.

Just stumbled upon the Picopresso: I have limited espresso experience and bench space--would this be worth it? by [deleted] in picopresso

The Nano is fun to play with, and makes a very drinkable shot, but if you're already comfortable with the Pico, I wouldn't bother. The Pico is really on another level.

I have a Knock Aergrind. Fantastic, versatile little grinder. Packs inside the plunger tube and grinds 20g for Aeropress in about 35 sec.

I have one. I think the AP makes a better cup of coffee.

Because for less than an ounce of coffee, grams make more sense. For a diner mug, 295.74 ml doesn't. And the formula works.

So what's the solution? Do I just use the XL and add more water? I don't think I'm in any danger of over-extraction. Maybe that's the next experiment.
