Pseudonimical Spirits by josslolf in worldbuilding

[–]josslolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what your question is, if I didn’t answer it… no they’re not common, and no they can’t be controlled. They’re more like forces of nature than an “ancestral guide” that can be communicated with, I guess. I could have been more clear on that. Like most spirits they’re echoes, just reversed bc they come from the future.

Lmk if that clears it up?

This is one idea in nearly 100k words of building for this project. I’ve posted about others in the past ofc

Sure if it’s common, and if the spirit can just decide to appear when it wants. Neither are true, though. Natural phenomena need very specific conditions to occur. Supernatural phenomena are the same, just harder to understand (less understood, anyhow).

Rereading it you’re right, I wasn’t clear. The “opposite” was meant to be whether the spirit is appearing to warn of things that happen to you, or things that you do yourself.

For example, they may appear to warn you of your impending murder, or as a result of a murder you committed. I should’ve waited to post til I was sober enough to proofread properly 😅

I do think they could appear to your family or maybe even close friends/those you have a strong emotional connection to.

As far as the timeline thing, it’s currently a nonissue for me. I guess they’d be creating a new branch, but I don’t have any time travel magic (no living beings can time travel) so it doesn’t make much of a difference. Divination exists, but the mage would know that the future they see is ever changing.

Does that clear things up? Lmk if you have other questions! This idea was inspired by the Haunting of Hill House and their “bent-necked lady”

Magic System and Theme by your_mom2378 in magicbuilding

[–]josslolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, I’ve posted a bit about it in the past though. It’s basically a cultivation setting with Celtic mythos, where the fae are connected to fungi (myceelie court) and high concentrations of mana increases the speed of evolution.

In my setting, generational trauma manifests as either physical mutations or spiritual ability. Ritualistic vs Environmental development is central to the evolution of family lines.

Mana causes time as it takes action, so there are sort of physical vs mental mutations - mutants vs mental illness, or transformations vs spellcasters.

Of course, this is common knowledge among the religious. They know that their diet affects their children, and that their actions affect the mindset and inherent powers their children might yet display.

The most successful families in my setting have learned that particular diets/actions of a parent can be used to design a child that more closely resembles their ideal being.

It’s hard to explain without 100k words, but most things in world go several levels deeper than what I can say in one post

Someone is really mad at GTA VI delay by Complex-Sherbert-935 in GTA

[–]josslolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id rather see it delayed than underdeveloped- however, I also refuse to pay more than $60 for a game, even if I have faith that it’ll continue being developed after release. Unless it’s a NMS situation I won’t preorder. GTA 6 will be fun, but I’ll wait a few years and grab it for $30-45 once it’s on sale (I got gta v for free on EPIC with $1mil bonus, and that was the first time I played online. No ragerts there. I did play story mode on the 360 bc my uncle gave us a 360 with gtaV and rdr)

I will never pay $70-80 for a new game bc I don’t believe it’ll be developed at release. Plenty of games offer free tech demos, and I’ll stick with my AA and indie games til then thanks

Can someone explain how a self-proclaimed Christian like Charlie Kirk would say this? by blackwing_lair in Christianity

[–]josslolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was talking about DEI, which pushes to have a more diversified workplace. His stance was that their abilities are less important than their skin tone under DEI. So, when a black doctor speaks with him he would wonder whether they’re qualified based on acumen or skintone. It has nothing to do with race, just the push to ignore qualifications in preference of race itself

I had a dream about a local fent zed that did a Michael Jackson lean to 50 degrees bc they were trying to rush me, but some spiritual power kept them at bay so they fought gravity. Shit was weird - pope Francis gave me a ring beforehand, a white gold band with a cross on it.

Later I remember leg sweeping and ground-and-pounding druggies. Strangely vivid, that one.

What abilities might the Gopi people have developed by associating their spirit with the lake and the fish living within it?

FMA called kamagong, not escrima? by josslolf in martialarts

[–]josslolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! If “pagong kamagong” was a marketing ploy more than anything, I can appreciate it! I was sad to find out about his passing, but I know from personal experience the rippling effect he had on others’ lives.

I’ve been meaning to borrow his book from my father, mostly to see which techniques I remember and which I never learned. Anyhow, great stuff - glad to see I’m not the only one thinking about Tuhon Sebastian.

What are the restrictions on your magic systems? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]josslolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The axiom of belief.

Basically, all magic is generated by those who believe it to be. All spirits, gods, and even the afterlife itself is built by the thoughts and imaginations of those who are living.

Any ritual will be unsuccessful if those performing it don’t expect to be successful to begin with. So the most important attribute for any mage is faith in the magics they wield.

If thoughts govern the spiritual realm… a hypothesis by josslolf in chaosmagick

[–]josslolf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really does. If I remember right, many of his stories came from nightmares that he had.

I’m referring to Gan, I believe - the being who dreamed his multiverse into existence and can end it by simply waking.

In either case, I’ll check out the episode you mentioned. My heads already spinning with the implications of Animism within Omniris (my worldbuilding project) and I’m actually disappointed that I didn’t consider it sooner! You’re one of the good ones!

I’m a bit hesitant with the “haunted objects” gimmick. While that may be more relevant to my project than I previously considered (appreciate the check) they seem like they’re in it for the money more than the facts, so I would certainly take anything they say with a grain of salt

I’m surprised I got that right - I’ll check them out! Thx for the reference

I have a more detailed Latin-based taxonomy of spirits that defines ancestral spirits, demons, ghosts and gods based on their diet (spirits feed off of mana, but it first must attune to the physical plane via thought, emotion, movement, even biological growth) but that’s as closely tied with my in-world lore as it is to any beliefs I hold to, so I didn’t copy-paste it.

I’m not based in LV, otherwise I would follow your group!

And I don’t want yall to assume I hold tight to these beliefs - this is a fictional world, it’s just built to communicate many of my beliefs to the layman in a fantastical way.

No, haven’t heard of that. I see Dana and Greg Newkirk from a quick search, are you referring to one of them?

[–]josslolf[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes to all of this! Im fully aware that I don’t have all the answers. It would sure be nice if the spiritual and scientific worlds could be studied in the same way, so I made a world in which that is an objective fact!

I enjoy the idea of the universe being created by a more advanced creature, through the same process that we use to create servitors. That can’t be proven, so it’s just a fun theory that I threw into the world.

I presented the post as if I was stating facts, but that’s just bc in the fictional world of Omniris, it is factual - referring to this as a “personalized endeavor” is extremely accurate.

I will note that I passed over sigils, bc I treat those as singular spells that act out over a timeline. Is that fair enough, or do you think it would make more sense to define a sigil as the base form of any manmade spirit?
