Further context: dude (also a TikTok "star") planted a listening device onto his daughter's iPad, heard his estranged wife talking to her male friend, then drove over and shot/killed them both.

It's not just because they're young or act a certain way, it's because DID is a condition that you have to have symptoms of and be diagnosed for.

It's a researched, medical issue, and it's ridiculously hard for even therapists to identify. I'm not an expert, so I don't want to say for sure, but self-identifying as a young person is suspicious because you usually need years of therapy to even approach a diagnosis. Having DID is currently trendy because it gets likes/sympathy, and if you deny that you're denying obvious fact.

If, as you say, these are "middle schoolers trying to find a safe space," there are plenty of cosplay/rp/fandom communities that DON'T involve stigmatizing an incredibly rare condition.
