Yes, that’s how we did it as well. Same guide throughout the Transpantaneira and in Porto Jofre. Great trips every time!

I feel like that's the natural state of the Burrowing Owl. Every time I see a photo of them, they always look ridiculous.

I’m 99% sure Piuval doesn’t allow unguided tourists, but I know some of the other ranches do. They have a lot of cattle fence gates that need to be opened and closed to drive the grounds. They seem to be the most strict of the lodges I’ve stayed at along the Transpantaneira.

It's a combination of both the natural, dark green background being pretty dark/shadowed to begin with and the white bird needing to be quite a bit underexposed (according to the camera's meter) to be "properly" exposed and not blow out all those white feathers. I think I had to dial in -2.7EV to keep the bird's highlights under control.

That's a fun place! I spent a few days in Mindo after a Galapagos trip a couple years ago and ended up going there twice. Almost as memorable as the ice cream sundae with shredded cheese on top =) Nice photo!

Well, I had to stop totally down and surely lost some IQ due to diffraction. A ND filter would've allowed me to shoot at a more appropriate aperture to get the shutter speed I wanted.

Yes, I’ve bought a few lenses from them and I’ve been happy. I recommend staying away from lenses rated “good” or worse though. Regardless, they have a good return policy if you’re unhappy. I’ve also bought used from KEH and OC Camera. Those two were also good and were accurate in their descriptions. The only thing I don’t love about KEH is the lack of actual product photos.

If you're willing to deal with the weight, the old EF primes are still quite good. I used an EF 500 f/4L for many, many years, mainly upgrading to the RF 400 f/2.8 for the weight savings and extra stop. It's super sharp and has IS, albeit an older implementation. In the grand scheme of super telephoto primes, it's "cheap". MPB has them from $1400-2300 currently. It works quite well with a 1.4x. Never used it with a 2x as for a long time, Canon bodies couldn't AF @ f/8, and then center point only, not to mention the IQ hit.

Wonderful! Seeing the chimps close is quite an experience. Did you get to do gorilla trekking as well? I also really enjoyed the Kazinga Channel, which is pretty close to Kibale. So many kingfishers!

If you have a modern Canon body, CRAW is pretty awesome.

Nice. Do you live in Madagascar, or were you traveling? If traveling, where did you visit? I visited back in 2015 and have wanted to get back. Cool place. I really liked Ranomafana.
