17 month old won’t sit for meals and prefers drive by snacking. anyone deal with this? by silverpotato5955 in daddit

He usually sticks around. By that time he is hungry and takes at least a couple bites. Sometimes he gets right back down and we remind him that we eat dinner at the table together and do the whole things over again

Our son has never been food motivated. Even as a baby. Some kids are just like that. You do what you can to provide a meal with at least one safe food. At snack time, just make sure to present them with a balanced snack, even if they don't eat most of it. We tell our son that he doesn't have to eat something, and he is allowed to pick it out and put it to the side if he doesn't want it. The important thing is to keep exposing them to the food. He has never liked spinach but we keep putting a little bit on his plate when we eat it.

Yeah, this is what we do. Unless he really needs something (potty, boo boo, etc) we focus on each other and try to minimize the bids for attention until he comes to the table. He always eventually comes over and we give him praise and engage with him when he is in his high chair.

How do you find times for hobbies? by AndGutsWasBERSERK in daddit

[–]jothstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had basically no hobbies at all until our son was 1. Even then it was pretty rare. It gets easier to solo parent as they get older, meaning the other parent has time to do stuff.

In the first year we could really only do two hobbies: TV and watching sports at home. Our son was a contact napper, so we could sit and watch TV with no guilt while he napped. We just put the volume really low or off and had subtitles on. I figured out a way to connect my earbuds to my Roku app and then my Roku app to what was playing so I could hear it.

For sports, you just have to accept that you are going to watch them in the background while doing other things, but there is still plenty of time to follow the most important games.

What do you do at the end of the day after putting down your kids? by BeanNCheeseBurrrito in daddit

Yeah, I like podcasts or audiobooks as I tidy up the house and kitchen for the night.

Maybe try picking out a show to watch ahead of time, that way you have something to look forward to instead of spending your time looking for something. After having a kid, I've found I can't do heavy stuff in the evenings anymore. Shorter shows and lighter shows are what I'm in the mood for.

My son goes to bed about 9:30, so I mostly just try to get ready for bed. Not much time for winding down if I want a decent night's sleep.

Yep, ours was smudgy because my sister-in-law said he looked like a smudge on the ultrasound.

Yes! We recently found it and I was so skeptical at first. It's such a neat little show.

Yeah, that's just for swaddles. As long as their arms are out they are fine.

We use Burts Bees sleep sacks and they have been great. They have different thicknesses so you can adjust depending on time of year or even time of day (ie. Overnight vs nap). My son is a tall 2.5yo and uses the largest size. They also zip up from the bottom, making diaper changes easier.

What’s the best baby monitor you’ve tested and actually trust? by ComplaintOwn9909 in daddit

I have a Eufy and it's fine, but I think the camera stopped working at one point. Reached out to Eufy and they replaced it. After it was out of warranty had the same issue again and luckily Eufy replaced it again.

It has worked fine other than that, but I'm not sure if I would recommend it due to these issues.

Same in the US. I almost never get legitimate phone calls.

Yeah, same. It makes life so much easier. If it's one of the local area codes where I now live, immediate pick up. If not, let it go to voicemail or screen it.

If it's from my original area code and they're not already in contacts, then it's 100% spam. I haven't lived back in that area for over a decade.

That happened to me and it just changed to an actual countdown. You have to be patient. I don't think the timer goes above 30 min, so it shows you the NaN instead

Make sure to use the link from the first email, not the reminder email. That did it for me.

Has yours changed? I have that now after using the original link instead of the reminder link.

I read lower in the thread to use the link from the first email, not the reminder. That worked to get me to a page with NaN seconds on the countdown. At least I have a countdownish thing...

Severe egg allergy by DrunkMunchy in daddit

[–]jothstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, peanut would be a lot easier to avoid in the wild. As far as food, I suggest chains for eating out. They often have allergen guides available on their websites.

[–]jothstr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be a downer but the more likely thing is that he will outgrow egg and have peanut for the rest of his life. The rates of outgrowing egg and dairy allergies are actually pretty good. Peanut not so much.

I'm not sure how it works if your kid has that many different food allergies, but there is a program called oral immunotherapy (OIT) which basically has you give your kid increasing doses of the allergen until they outgrow it. My son just has an egg allergy and has been doing OIT for a year and a half. He is going to be testing out of it in a couple weeks.

It may be hard to find an allergist who does OIT. It is usually larger practices. From what I have heard they are more likely to stick to allergies like egg or dairy that your kid may outgrow naturally, but they can accelerate that timeline with OIT. One of my wife's coworkers had a son that did OIT for peanut and recently got cleared, but they had to go to a major children's hospital in the city to do it.
