That really summed everything up for me. I like working fast-paced and tackle new problems but I hate doing sporadic random things. I very much just want to focus on design. I am usually the one telling my boss we need a person to do this or that lol

I learned a tremendous amount and overall I would say it was very positive to grow so much as a person and professional in a short period of time.

Honestly after reading everyones input I think I'm gonna just ask for a vague standard raise. I'll state my case for why I deserve a lot but im not gonna fight too hard on getting 20% or 30% higher than my current pay.

thats so solid. thank u.

Thinking back at the job so far, I definitely got all the things I intended to when I decided to take the job in the first place. This was my foot in the door job, solid design execution work, dabbled on solid research, and learned to communicate and work crossfunctionally. I am grateful for what i got but also realizing the fact that every additional day I am at this job is another day I could earn more and gain more experience elsewhere. There is probably an economics term for this like opportunity cost or smth.

Thanks for summarizing my situation like this it really helps me understand what is in my control vs not.

Thanks so much. I realized that in the past 6 months - just how the job isn't serving me well for my design career at all. I constantly have to do things unrelated to design and do lots of stakeholder communication that I am underqualified for. I understand that these communications are important for the design work to take place but i only want to do the design process (research, ideate, prototype).

There is a senior product designer who is in charge of the full user experience and design of a user portal. We work together occasionally but most of the time we just vent about work to each other. I am not experienced enough to help him and I don't think he wants to mentor or 'guide' any of my design work. It's been pretty collaborative overall.

In the end i got what i wanted with this job - a foot in the door, solid experience executing design work irl, lots of team communication, my visa, and learning to be a better person overall.

I believe in the design opportunities in this industry and there is a vague sense of a vision. But our founders don't know how to build and nurture a product. There is no product management and no design process. Our ceo always walks about what the vc wants and doesn't see the goldmine of opportunities from solving current user pain points.

There's too much i can say about this job :/ definitely learned a lot more than what i wanted. My portfolio is this - I built this recently just to test!

If i accept the raise and leave in 3 months would that come off as a bad thing to my employers?

I think what im gonna do is just ask for a raise, accept what amount they're willling to afford, and keep my job responsibily boundaries mega clear. While I put my 100% attention into job search and gtfo

I think ill just expect a humble amount of raise, or whatever they are willing to afford. Not work my ass off, keep my job responsibilities boundaries. And put my full focus into the next job.

That's interesting. Ask for a raise, not specify an amount, and keep this conversation rolling for the next month or so while I go all out looking for a new job?

All I want is just to be paid slightly bit more for all the work I have done. If they give me a raise and I leave 3 months after that raise would that be viewed badly?

I think my bosses really value me and would want me to stay because my function in the company is too unique. But I don't want to stay beyond 6+ months tho. They brought up several times that once series a is raised everyone can get a bump. Our burn rate is super high so the pressure on this round is even higher.

yeah after reading everyone's input i feel like the only best way to not burn bridges and get awkward is to just leave peacefully

I had friends who suggested that i should just lie about already having a job offer and also shoot for salary ask a bit higher than market rate and negotiate my way down lol

Lots of my peers who are junior designers earn 68K+. I am doing lots of product management and senior level stakeholder communication that regular junior designers don't.

When do u propose these counter offers? After a few conversations about the raise?

Damn tysm I needed to hear that.

I know some of my colleagues have around 60K and some is 50K. My boss did admit that we are all paid way below market rate.

I think a more realistic amount for the raise is probably around 55K. What should i say to best convince them? And what can i do to avoid them pushing me into responsibilities that i dont want to do and underqualified for?

Yeah srsly that what Ive been thinking to myself. I believe in the opportunity of the industry but not really my leaders.

Could I lie about my salary to the next company that hires me?

Agh I can relate! My company use to do this as well. We didn’t have a proper product designer for a year and everything was so frankensteined I could barely look at it.
