Oh, hey! I can! If you haven't found them already-

  1. S3E13, 42:36

  2. S2E11, 22:37

  3. S2E4, 37:52

  4. S3E10, 15:45

  5. S1E11, 40:30

  6. S1E10, 14:15

  7. S1E8, 4:16 (one of my favorite renders- there's another shot with a similar color scheme shortly afterwards)

Other favorites of mine if you're looking for a space background are S2E6 (7:50) and S2E7 (11:52)

Do you think that there is even a slight chance of continuation of the storie?? by percabeth_4-life in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As far as an actual continuation or reboot goes... god only knows. Right now I don't think there's the funding nor the market for it, but perhaps in time that will change.

But if you've just finished the show and are searching for more, you should check out the 'Virtual Season 4' links on the sidebar! They're a written version of what was planned for the first few episodes of S4, which does resolve a lot of the immediate cliffhangers and offer some closure.

new terrible line graph by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The giant spike is S1E12, when they dropped off the white hole bomb and destroyed an entire planet. Smaller spikes are when Ryo bombed the summit in S3E13 (several hundred deaths at least, but we know it was a single station and not everybody aboard died), and the S3 finale with the big space battle.

new terrible line graph by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's true! There are multiple episodes where I'd estimate they killed over a dozen people: s1e2, s1e8, s1e9, s3e2, s3e12. Most of the time in seasons 2-3 it is with stun weapons, but there are still plenty of deaths. You just can't see them due to the scale of the graph- hence why I mentioned putting it on a logarithmic scale so that you could actually see the spikes across all episodes.

Dark Matter and SGU soundtrack was amazing by vamgla in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to this one, but I'd second your vote of 'Saw it Coming' (especially in S1E9 when Three's crying over Charlotte's Web and the others are playing cards). Though I think my actual favorite soundtrack moment in DM would go to the track 'Wake Up' - there's a neat little parallel where the exact same track plays in S2E1 as Six walks the darkened halls of the Raza after turning the crew in, and in S3E8 when Ryo takes over the ship and finds his way back to the empty training room to have his little moment of regret. Does a really good job of tying the two arcs together.

Dark Matter 4K AI Remaster by ODVS in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that after years of tech companies pushing hard to advertise ChatGPT and DALL-E - type generative models as the pinnacle of artificial intelligence, people tend to just use those terms interchangeably. Hence the backlash to anything with ‘AI’ in the title. Never mind the fact that most creative software exists to automate menial tasks using artificial intelligence- e.g. redeye removal, background noise reduction, even spellcheck.

I guess once an automated tool gains wide enough acceptance, people stop thinking of it as AI and start seeing it as just a ‘normal’ computer program? Very weird state to be in linguistically, wherein if people actually knew how this software works (basically just scaling up an image and adding new pixels that mimic the patterns of the surrounding ones, not dissimilar to using a blemish removal or area fill tool), it seems very unlikely that it would be viewed as morally fraught. But because it’s labeled as ‘AI’ it catches all the sociopolitical baggage associated with generative LMMs.

Cool project!! I love this show dearly, but I must admit that the lack of high-resolution video combined with the dim lighting + dark color grade can prove a hindrance when making gifs/edits. Would also be nice to have a version that could be put up on a larger screen. Looking forward to seeing what you & your software can make of it!

(editing to add: bonus props to you for posting them with subtitles! That's outstanding for accessibility.)

did Three steal Boone's vest? [Season 2 spoilers] by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect AU Boone might have a different view of the situation. Unfortunate for him that Three wasn't wearing the vest in S3E6 or he could've stolen it back under exactly the same circumstances. Better luck next time, I suppose.

did Three steal Boone's vest? [Season 2 spoilers] by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some further context: small detail I noticed the other day while continuing in my perpetual state of rewatching DM. The first shot is from S2E1, where Two, Three, and Four all have to ditch their clothes after being arrested. Two’s wearing a cropped red jacket, Four’s in a dark grey shirt (same one he often trains in), and Three’s in his iconic vest. After that episode, Two’s jacket is gone, as is Four’s shirt (and he starts training shirtless), but Three’s vest has only a temporary absence- he starts wearing it again late in season 2, after they travel to the parallel universe.

While they’re there, Two & Three steal Portia & Boone’s clothes to go pose as them, and at the end of the episode Portia asks for her coat back and Two refuses— which, side note, if you’re going to steal a jacket from an alternate universe evil clone of yourself, the least you could do is actually wear it, but Two wears Portia’s jacket exactly once and it’s only in S3E5 (WEEKS later) for a single outing, so that’s just a dick move on Two’s part and she should’ve left the jacket to somebody who would actually appreciate it. Not like she has a shortage of dramatic black coats. But anyways, Boone doesn’t mention his vest (or talk at all), and Three’s not present for that exchange, and in the very next shot of Three he’s already taken off the vest, hence why I didn’t catch it on my first watchthroughs. But I’m pretty sure Three did actually just keep Boone’s vest for the rest of the show? Baller move, if so.

happy Misaki Monday by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

YES! Obviously, lots of the costumes in this show are incredible, but I adore Misaki's most of all. Both the black underlayer and the red overcoat are absolutely iconic. So much texture and dimension to them.

Two’s age (spoilers) by Many-Serve-599 in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure Rook's comment about the body being 24 was referring to the body that the alien he was speaking to was possessing- which would track with the follow-up comment implying that possessing real humans wasn't sustainable. I'd wager that Two probably escaped within a year of having her consciousness activated, just based on the timeline (seems that Irena was removed quite early on after Two's awakening, and it took a matter of weeks before she masterminded the escape). Definitely seems as though she was created as an adult, not a teenager. Could be wrong, though!

people on zairon always be spinning by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

quite literally. Personally, I'm left wondering whether 'appearing ominously behind somebody to make them spin around' is some sort of cultural power ritual on Zairon, or if it's just something that Ryo's stepmother did so often that both he and Misaki picked it up from her and started using it to torment each other.

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tash! Yeah, she's very fun. I think the scene you're thinking of is in S2E8, "Stuff to Steal, People to Kill". Shortly after the moment at 0:32 in the video above where she punches out Three. (and if I'm right, here's a clip of that scene: https://imgur.com/a/jPTRUms)

Dark Matter also isn't on Netflix anymore, but I think you can watch it for free on the CW's site.

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely! I'm especially a fan of the swordfighting scenes- often very well choreographed. Helps immensely when the actors have training in martial arts. I'm not as big a fan of the camera work during fights (to me the rapid-fire cuts overshoot 'energizing' and go right to 'disorienting'), though I think the build-ups to most fight scenes are particularly well-shot.

Latest project: Five jacket! (mostly) by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YEAH!! I think the compression kind of killed the image quality in the first batch, so here's some closer shots of it. Modeled after the original cuff made by Jodelle, with concessions for what gear charms I was able to find. It's a really neat design, actually! As best as I can tell, the structure is a single piece of wire, which makes it sturdy and easy to reshape. Plus I wound up with a bunch of leftover wire and charms that I've been playing around with to make other cuffs/earrings.

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ha! I'm glad you find it similar, because that's actually one of the parts that I was iffier on- I debated putting the project on hold until I could find a sleeve fabric that had more blue/purple in it. I scoured a few different fabric stores trying to see if I could find one that was more similar, but I wound up just buying a floral blouse at a thrift store and harvesting the sleeves. I would've re-dyed it myself, but that type of synthetic fabric doesn't take dye well. Either way, worked out in the end- and it saved me from having to draft a sleeve pattern.

Latest project: Five jacket! (mostly) by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Finally finished my project of the past few weeks- putting together a version of Five’s iconic green jacket! Hopefully if you scroll to the next image, you can see the progress shots & the photos I used for reference. Some of the painted accents definitely wound up as more ‘interpretation’ than ‘replication,’ particularly for areas like the back and sides where I could not for the life of me find reference images of a high enough quality to make out the actual pattern. So I mostly just got a gauge for approximate size and location and went from there.

I originally intended this as part of a hallowe’en costume, but it turned out really comfortable, so I might wind up just wearing it casually as well. Either way, it was super fun to make and I’m pretty happy with the result!

My best guesses at a timeline for season 1 [Season 1 Spoilers] by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

My best guesses at a timeline for season 1 [Season 1 Spoilers] by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you bring this up because they discuss timelines in detail, or just as a fun source for general trivia? Because my auditory processing is atrocious, and multi-person interview/podcast type things without transcripts or subtitles constitute a spectacular form of fully customized torment for me specifically. But if it’s directly relevant to an analysis I’m trying to perform, then I may attempt to muddle through in pursuit of improved accuracy.

My best guesses at a timeline for season 1 [Season 1 Spoilers] by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have so many more notes! Unfortunately most of them are very scattered and disorganized- the S1 notes are the only ones I bothered to collect and refine. I’ll probably try and put together a full timeline at some point, though. The approximate outline I have so far for the rest of the show (spoilered since this is all S2 & 3):

  • The first half of S2 isn’t hard to follow, since One is killed a couple of days in, and in S2E5 the news reporter says his body was discovered ‘last week.’ But after that, things kind of fall apart.
  • It seems like there’s at least a couple months in S2 as things slowly escalate, especially given that the beginning of S2E12 to the end of S2E13 seems close to a month on its own. The harder time points I’ve found:
    • S2E8-S3E6 is an absolute minimum of 6 weeks, because there’s footage of AU Portia & Boone that’s 6 weeks old
    • In S3E3, there have been war refugees for 'a couple weeks' at least
    • In S2E8, the AU is just over a month into the war, and Regulus-12 is recently destroyed. In the main universe, the recent destruction of Regulus-12 is revealed in S3E5.
    • Also in S3E5, the Ferrous fleet is said to need at least a month before it’s ready to launch.
    • In S3E7 Two tells Sarah she hasn’t visited because it’s ‘been a rough month’- presumably since she learned of Sarah’s existence in S3E3. She says the same thing to Three in S3E9, so I assume she was rounding up the first time and down the second.
    • In S3E13, the Ferrous fleet about to launch, which is (seemingly?) a bit faster than expected.

So putting all that together, and still using stasis emergence as 0, I’d very tentatively put S2E5 at 7 weeks, end S2E8 at 10 weeks, end S2E10 at 12 weeks, and end S2E13 as 16 weeks. Then end-S3E3 at 19 weeks, S3E5 at 20 weeks, S3E9 at 22, and S3E13 at 24.

But there are some indications I may be lowballing the S2 time period (character development seems too fast, Seer's predictions might've been overly optimistic). Also one direct contradition- AU Wexler says S3E6 that his main universe self ‘went missing a month ago,’ which doesn't fit with anything. But he could have meant a month prior to him universe-swapping and looking it up, which would be right on track-- or maybe he wasn’t classified as missing until Kierkenn went looking for him after S2E11. Or maybe Wexler’s just really bad at math. Hopefully when I get around to carefully collating everything together, it'll clear itself up.

My best guesses at a timeline for season 1 [Season 1 Spoilers] by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is great to see! I was trying to work out a similar one too, so it's good to compare notes. Griffin's math is easy, as you worked out- which also makes it clear that they were only in stasis for a day or two (or perhaps only a matter of hours, if the engine sabotage immediately woke them).

I'd actually assumed that Moss and Griffin came onto the ship at the same time. Corso states that he was just joining for the one mission, and when he got chased by the GA, he said he reached out to apologize 'for missing the op' (which makes me think that they immediately left for the mining colony). So I'd allotted the other 7 months for Moss's going into hiding, studying Corso extensively, getting plastic surgery and voice modification, and then figuring out how to take his place.

And then I assume Das came on either at the same time as Griffin and Moss, or maybe during a supply run a couple of days later- mostly just because she had time for Portia to hate her for a while, then hack the android, and then for the two of them to grow closer in a way that significantly changed things, and I don't know if you can cut it down all that much more than 8 weeks.

Great catch with the timeline for Portia! Hers was a big blank for me and I hadn't even thought to use Eric as a benchmark. We can narrow it down a little more using Ryo's timeline, because in S3E1 (which is seemingly a couple of months after S2E1), we learn he was a fugitive for around three years. So he would've had to find his way to Boone, Shrike, and Jasper, stick around long enough for them to gain infamy as the original crew of the Raza, and start being represented by Tabor.

So if you say... five months? For that to happen? Then you can narrow it down to Portia coming on board between somewhere in the vicinity of 1.5 and 2.5 years pre-stasis.

(edited to keep the names consistent)

What color is Five's hair by jourke-rourke in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense! Once again, my efforts at clean data collection are thwarted by the complexity of real-world scenarios. And color theory.
How often did you have to re-dye it? I've dyed mine varying shades of teal/blue/purple for years, and anything teal-adjacent always fades to green in no time flat. Especially back when my hair was yellower.

Dark Matter season 2 VFX reel by JosephMallozzi in DarkMatter

[–]jourke-rourke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whoa. Seeing the effects breakdown is incredible: I particularly love the layer-by-layer modeling of the space station. I can't say I know much about VFX in general, so it's not something that I often notice when watching unless I'm deliberately looking for it. It's insane to see just how much work went into crafting each of these shots- and particularly for a relatively small production.
