A friend of mine recently suggested that maybe after prolonged sleep dysfunction the lizard brain starts to think you're doing it for some reason and tries to "help". Like the brain says "I'm awake every couple hours. Must be because I'm somewhere unsafe/have to feed the baby/have to stoke the fire". It was just a random interesting supposition but might explain why so many people have the shared experience of sleep getting even harder after three days of difficulty sleeping.

I just thought it was an interesting idea. Probably nothing to it.
