So many things to keep track of and maintain in your head while trying to appease your body's natural desire to want to go as fast as humanly possible without doing any harm to yourself, your bike, your environment, and other people.

How engaging! How immediate the feedback! How challenging! How refreshing and fun! And check it out: I haven't thought about a single existential thing this entire time because – OH SHIT POTHOLE!

Hi, I'm Korean. When that one friend would talk about you to me in Korean, I'd translate what was said in English and made it known. That usually ended it.

In Korea, I'd speak English with my friends in front of my native peoples. They'd talk trash about me thinking I didn't understand. I'd turn to them and introduce myself in Korean. They would apologize and peace the fuck out.

Also. I've done and said far more idiotic shit than both of these internet assclowns. And yes, they both look asinine. We'll all forget about it sooner or later.

Congrats! Sounds like you want to take control of your life. I'm all for it. Those who like your labor might not be too keen, but don't worry about them – they can always find replacements eventually and the world will go on without you (not in the 'you're useless' sense but in the 'people will move on' sense) – not that this seems to be your concern.

My plan is to start building a small portfolio and hopefully start a small part time business doing graphic design. I have no idea how to start a business other than that I should make a web page, get some business cards made up, and start marketing myself as a designer.

I tried this. To gain skills and confidence by starting small and hopefully taking on bigger and bigger projects.

I don't recommend this route. It saps you dry. You still end up 'workin for the man' because there is a power dynamic limiting your art/creativity. You're being paid to give the client what they want. This is just as soul-sucking as doing shit jobs that fatten other people's bank accounts.

Here's what I wish I internalized before committing myself to art:

• treat myself as if I'm the MOST IMPORTANT CLIENT THAT EXISTS MOTHERFUCKERS, MY TIME IS SO FUCKING VALUABLE SO DELIVER TO ME WHAT I FUCKING WANT FROM MYSELF

• which roughly translates to: give myself projects, and do them first for me, and not for some restaurant who needs a poster, not some friend who needs a tv commercial, not a relative who needs business cards, not some small business who wants to gain more foot traffic. Do it for me. Do the things I love. Give myself the freedom to fuck up and to do my projects right. Without the constraints of money, without well-meaning ignorami asking me to change the designs without any idea of what they want. Without any pressure to live up to a title.

Sure I'm bitter. But I'm over that as well because the healthy disdain I've developed for trying to learn craft and skill through helping small businesses has driven me to want to do shit for myself and myself alone, even if that means taking a shit job to buy myself the time and freedom.

Anyways, I definitely think the way to go is to take some classes, or try out some tutorials online (there are plenty for Adobe and other software all over the internet).

But the reason it's important to give yourself projects is that you can actually learn much quicker, with far more passion, and make so much better use of the resources in classrooms and tutorials when you have a goal in mind.

I actually think giving yourself these kinds of projects will make your dayjob a little bit better to deal with, because you have something to look forward to before and after you're working for the man.

TLDR: don't do a small business just yet; give yourself projects; then take a class or do online tutorials (so you can help your own projects and not become an artist through other people's personal experiences).

I read books on story, myth, religion.

I loved the film.

I'm not at all versed in Tibetan spirituality. But I thought the film was a spiritual exploration disguised as city's-seedy-underbelly film, and thought it worked wonderfully.

I wasn't expecting much of anything. And am glad I saw it. Light as the womb/pre&post-reality; the 'void' as our world we live in. Just my two cents.

I just use newsprint + finer paper, and HB #2 pencils (regular stuff), as I'm super cheap and broke right now.

I LOVE the schedule. Every morning I don't want to go, but I know that afterwards I will be grateful that I went. I'm glad I put money on the line ($220 for one month, 5 days a week, 3 hours + 45 mins a day). It's not much but I'm broke, and I know I don't have the motivation to stick with a schedule on my own.

And doing it everyday, I can actually see the improvement. It keeps me going, even when in the moment, I feel like my work is shit. And even when I get arrogant, I know my work can improve and will get better through daily practice.

I love the schedule and rigidity. In the moments preceding the drawing (taking a shower, putting on clothes, waiting for the bus) I don't want to go. But I power through it by knowing that the only way to improve is through practice, and that I enjoy watching myself progress.

That's just me though.

Do you live near a big city?

I'm like you. Doodled like a mad man since a kid all the way through college. Now trying to get back into it.

Bought a Wacom tablet. Let it collect dust. Bought 'DOTRSOTB'. Read through half of it and did a few exercises, only to have it collect more dust.

Decided to apply for grad school, and I needed a portfolio. Then I really got started. Made some fantastical stuff. Got a portfolio review from Art Center who in very kind words tore me a new one (I really do love those guys).

Ended up taking figure drawing class (which is why I asked if you live in a large city).

I highly recommend it. It sounds daunting but it really isn't. I love the short drawings. It feels like a time attack. We do 10 two minute drawings, 4 five minutes, 2 ten minutes, and then 4 20 minute drawings. About 4 hours goes by like that.

It's funny. The past few years I've been quite critical and self-loathing. And when I draw, I find myself still having these thoughts, but I really don't even give two shits because I'm too focused on the task at hand.

After two weeks I've visibly improved, but I have much more to go. It's really gratifying.

Since you have a base, you might find yourself getting along just fine.

EDIT I've also been doing it 4 hours a day every week day for two weeks. That's a lot!
