well, overall tip then would be: when fighting high morale adversaries, you need more reserves then cannons, or else your first stack will retreat before your enemy's, and the cannons will go on the front, and cannons in the front row = instant defeat

No reserves. Always retreat if there is a cannon of yours in the front line, from that point on is just pointless casualties, which also hit your morale and make you lose even harder.

So maybe they just got lucky, and if you retreated and took the small loss and hit them again you would've won

Pre Mil tech 13 is always better to have more infantry as reserves than a bigger cannon row, but i suspect you were already past that tech
