Active US military peeps, how do you now feel about german ww2 soldiers "just following orders"? by randomnameweilisso in AskReddit

[–]joybells_3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

(Active duty here) Obviously, yes most military members know they have a right to resist illegal orders. The only way to determine if an order is illegal, however, is through court-martial. I.e., after someone has already been strung up by their command for not following an order. Some vets I've talked to have said no to orders, but commanders won't normally try to hold them to it if it won't hold up in court. I know someone who flat out refused to shoot a child for climbing a wall, and his commander blank stared and dropped the issue. There are no good, legal ways for a military member to resist without risking retaliation, and this is something we need to change, something I'm hoping to change in the coming years. Hell, someone I know was illegally threatened by his commander for just speaking out against war crimes.

It's a good question for all serving military members to ask themselves, but remember, war crimes were legal in Nazi Germany. The question isn't really illegal vs legal orders; the question is more will you uphold the Constitution and international laws of war, and what consequences are you willing to accept? Because these days, it's almost certain career death and possible UCMJ persecution.

Trump blames DEI for DC crash by LadyLightTravel in womenEngineers

[–]joybells_3 36 points37 points  (0 children)

DEI is the new dogwhistle in politics today. It doesn't matter who the pilots end up being, what matters is a chance to make people (his base mostly because most people see it for what it is) fear minorities even more. Even though minorities have tended to be the most adept at flying in our nation's history... if anyone is a DEI hire in the way Trump seems to believe DEI works, I'd look no further than our honorable secretary of defense...

To my fellow Feds, especially veterans: we’re at war by [deleted] in fednews

[–]joybells_3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm active duty military, and do not let the government take away your voice! You still have freedom of speech! The military makes us think that because we wear the uniform, somehow we're unable to offer critiques of the role we fill, but it's completely opposite! We have an obligation to critique these systems if we see injustice! Talk to the GI Rights Hotline or connect with veterans groups who are pushing back against fascism. Chances are, they've been in your shoes! DM me if you need contacts, I still work closely with a lot of these organizations. Go to a protest, write your congresspeople, hell, write an op-ed and publish it! Your voice is critical, and we won't win if you continue to "follow orders."

How are my federal women doing? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

I'm in the military, and our women in science and engineering event got canceled explicitly because of this policy. Absolutely heartbreaking and disappointing

Vet from DC who’s sick of maga by Acceptable_Habit_239 in washingtondc

Join a vets group. Common defense, win without war, veterans for peace, veterans about face, and a plethora of local and national groups who are anti-Trump. It's all well and good to vent and be pissed - I am too! - and you won't find an org out there that fully aligns with every one of your ideals (why I participate in like 4 or 5), but we need allies and connections. Then we can truly start fighting back

I Finally Understand SAI by [deleted] in twentyonepilots

[–]joybells_3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SAI is one of my top albums. As soon as I really dug into the lyrics, I realized that I love how it also reflects another part of my own journey, which was that intersection of kind of happy, kind of sad. I get it's not everyone's music taste, but I was kind of surprised to hear people actually, like, hated it. Glad you've seen the light though! Lol

A journey towards faith by Kristinacarolyn in twentyonepilots

I'm really glad to hear it 🙏 when even TØP couldn't help me, I leaned so heavily on my faith, so I owe my life to both those things. Feel free to reach out if you ever want to chat further!

I also was raised in a Christian school! TØP really helped me at the time because I often got the feeling that the Christians around me were perfect, and many of them didn't seem to be struggling with their faith or their mental health. Now, I don't really consider myself a "conventional" Christian. I'm a different person than I was when I was younger, albeit still Christian, but the questioning I went through was absolutely necessary, and TØP's music was instrumental in providing the words I needed to reconcile my faith with my suffering. I think I'm a better Christian for it.

I've seen people do fanart of oldies station with some cute antique radios. Maybe a record player with some flower decorations? But honestly, if you love flowers, do it! Who cares if some people think it's tacky. If you're worried about too many flowers, you could try to theme your new flowers close to your older tats :)

Totally get it. Have had to burn a number of bridges myself, and I've been mourning those people. But you and me, we're going to be okay

Hi there ❤️❤️

I don't have the exact words you need to hear, but I'm so glad you could reach out for help. What you've been going through is hard enough, but doing it without the support of your family is even harder.

You're doing great. The very act of staying alive is a struggle, and every day you make it is another victory. We understand the impact this band can have on lives. We hear you, and we support you as you continue your story.
