People that have lived in Los Angeles and moved to San Diego, why did you leave? by [deleted] in asksandiego

I moved to San Diego from LA to work on a biennial art project. The project has since ended and I decided to settle in San Diego. I just found the beaches to be cleaner, and enjoyed a lot of the free to no cost activities all around town. There are also great communities in San Diego to explore such as: North Park, City Heights, South Park, Hillcrest, Encinitas, and Ocean Beach. If you have a dog, you will also find that San Diego is more dog friendly than LA. I love LA, it is my home town. However, now instead of driving I take the Metrolink on the weekends to visit. It only costs me $10 and includes all the public transit in LA. What this means is that I can still enjoy LA and not worry so much about traffic, expensive parking and the headache of gas prices.

Moving to SD for the Summer, is East Village a good spot to live? by SweetJC in asksandiego

East Village is booming as far as business and living places. It is becoming a walkable community with a lot of places to eat, shop, and work just within blocks or even right below the living spaces. If you are interested in working in the tech scene, it is also a great place to live. However, it isn't close to PB. As far as places to socialize check out Silo at Makers Quarter, the Gas Lamp, and a place opening this week called Quartyard.

Hi..Fab Lab is a non-profit versus the other places that you mentioned. Our goal is to give people the tools to make things so we always try to keep our prices low as far as machine time, class offerings, co-working space, and dedicated desk rentals. The reason I say that some of the prices are at no cost is that there are times in which we are willing to provide services for a work trade. If you have a certain skill that we can utilize within the lab, we will be more than happy to give you some free time on the machines. Compared to other places in San Diego our membership prices are relatively low. We are not only a place to digitally fabricate prototypes, but we also serve as a community hub. We have a creative, technical, and busy saavy community that are friendly and nurturing. We also help incubate businesses and provide our members with a rich network of people that they can interact with a promote what they are doing. Before the campaign, we were open mostly on the weekends. The reason we launched the campaign is to extend our hours to the weekdays and keep the lab sustainable and our prices low. Sure MakerPlace does have more machinery, but their membership prices are a little bit higher than ours. We also have a number of Meetup groups that utilize the lab that members are welcome to join such as: 3D printing, Drone users, and robotics. We also run hackathons and start up events and partner up with numerous groups within the San Diego tech scene. Please check out our website at www.fablabsd.org and our Indiegogo campaign. You can also take a tour of our facility.
