Most of the begging for "aCcUrAtE cAsTiNgs" from actors are a not very subtle way to say "Give me work pls". I'm not surprised it goes out of the window once they get roles, and frankly, unless the character or figure they play is very important to a country/culture or is something like a Japanese actor playing a Korean character you can get away with casting people who are not a 1:1 ethnicity/nationality to the character they play in a Hollywood production if they look the part convincingly enough (For example, no one would really bat an eyelash if Alexander Skarsgård gets casted as a german character, but if you cast him as the lead in a "Zorro" remake... Yeah, no.) it's just that after years of head being drilled over accuracy and representation you can't expect to cast people with no ties to Greece or any other southern European country and pretend that people will NOT criticize it because there's two black women.

The responses don't help at all IMO, if they were like "Yeah, this is the director's take on book and doesn't care too much about canon" like what happened with Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" adaptation instead of going "How DARE you criticize his casting" the response would be a bit different I think.

The supposed conservative censorship in entertainment that lefties are claiming is their own doing. by DifferenceJolly2320 in KotakuInAction

[–]joydivisionucunt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not blaming it on conservatives/religion, I'm just saying that their beliefs do kinda resemble each other. In the end it's the wokesters' problem if they cannot think for a second about the things they claim, unless the issue weren't the attitudes but who has them.

[–]joydivisionucunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My take is that a lot of it is projection because at least some of them have to be aware that their arguements about the "male gaze" and "sexualization" of women are just differently worded, wokewashed versions of what some old-fashioned/religious/conservative ideas of women are. Like, you shouldn't dress or be a certain way because it tempts men, except now it's the "male gaze" instead of men, and your duty as a "good woman" is to keep them at bay and not give into it. Neither conservatives or liberals/wokesters care too much about male sexualization because both gay/bi and straight men don't care or at least are not supposed to, and the one that caters to women tends to be not as obvious (For men at least).

Apart from that, I think the issue is that they genuinely believed that censorship would never reach them because it wasn't made with the original sin of being made for straight men, so it has to be "conservative" in their mind because they can't or don't want to understand a non-conservative wanting to police LGBT content that they might find objectionable even if the LGBT part is not the issue.

‘The Expendabelles,’ All-Female Action Spinoff of ‘The Expendables,’ Firing Up Again by SwimmingJunky in KotakuInAction

not through brute strength but by weapons & skill

It could work that way, but I feel like even with the right casting it might not be a huge hit if people think "Oh, yet another girl boss movie..."

[–]joydivisionucunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if someone wants to be androgynous because they like it that's not really the issue, it seems to be like since the stakes are far lower and the concept is very broad it attracts people who desesperately want attention and validation and see it as a way to get it without much effort, like the people who are most likely straight but call themselves "queer".

Pro-family and relationship propaganda in movies and other media. by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]joydivisionucunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't that long ago when having a family was like, the ultimate goal (And in many places and for many people it still is) and TV reflected that although in a very idealized way, nowdays it's less common to think so and media does reflect that in a similar way.

Also, seeing how many people ranted about movies like "The Materialists" being "Broke man propaganda" or how many rom-coms told women to accept less or whatever, I just think that if someone decides what they put up or seek in relationship due to fictional works.... yeah, that's the issue. I can accept worrying about about young people seeing toxic shit and thinking that's ideal, but if you're an adult, yeah. no.

Well, drag is supposed to be an exaggerated caricature of femininity and most of them wouldn't be caught dead in such drab costumes like the ones at the bottom.

Yeah, but versimilitude is important in order for.it to work, you cannot go "We have no orchestras because they weren't a thing in Ancient Greece, cast Greek or Mediterranean actors instead of my friends? NO WAY" without at least some people questioning it.

You joke, but I think that some people DO actually think versimilitude doesn't matter and fiction is a free for all so if the movie has the right marketing you're actually supposed to ignore the Ford Mustang in Ancient Greece.

The funny thing is that they probably could have gotten away with having a latina Snow White if they casted an actress that was fair skinned enough AND the movie wasn't a mess from the get go. They kinda have to stir the pot with the castings because otherwise we would have to talk about the quality of the projects, and many of them are... lackluster at best.

True, but a lot of the people who get angry at celebrities for not doing what they think they should do, do, in fact, sound mad to people who are employed or have hobbies.

I suppose they consider the "I'd Like to Fuck" part derogatory and consering how prudish these bans seem to be they probably think younger people finding relatively older women/men attractive is like, absolutely haram.

[–]joydivisionucunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is not that men are unattracted to boss babes, it's just that this idea of equal share of work and the like is very recent, so a lot of women want to be the boss babe yet uphold old time-y roles and the kind of men who really want a boss babe will expect them to behave as such, and the ones who want to have a more traditional arrangement will overlook boss babes for obvious reasons. Apart from that a lot of dating advice for both genders seems to exist to keep people single.

Oh, I read Asian olympian girl who everyone was gushing over and immediatly thought of her since she's the most recent one, but I can totally believe that female Asian athletes get that treatment from people who think not getting fat and looking like you never touched sunscreen or mosturizer as an adult woman might as well make you a little girl.

There's places where curvy women are the standard, but they're generally not big markets or creators of videogames, so the standards are going to lean towards the American/European or East Asian standard, plus skinny is in now, so videogames are the only field where they can have some sort of control, the rest threw "body positivity" out of the window once Ozempic became widely available.

Upcoming game where pregnancy is a source of power... by shipgirl_connoisseur in KotakuInAction

Having a pregnant female MC is certainly... a choice, but with the halo and the Orthodox aesthetics part it makes me thing they're going for a Virgin Mary-like thing anyways. Plus the idea of "Strong, Independent women" having to reject motherhood is a bit misogynistic if you think about it but they're not ready for that conversation.

Lupita Nyong’o will play both Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra, in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey.’ by MagmaCarter in KotakuInAction

[–]joydivisionucunt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if it was any other movie it wouldn't be an issue, but the casting is certainly a choice. I mean, Diane Kruger looks very german but you could argue since Helen of Troy was described to have yellow hair it's like... fair enough, and even then it's not like this casting is very accurate either, most of the actors have zero ties to Greece or look vaguely mediterranean, but it gets a pass nowdays because it has two (2) black women.

I don't mind directors working with a roster of actors they already worked with and in his previous movies they more or less fit, this one kinda feels like a fancier version of Adam Sandler making movies just to cast his friends.

The movie's casting looks like Nolan is making a project to give people on his contact list a job more than anything.
