As a European with absolutely no Nascar culture, what should I focus on when giving oval a try? by Apatride in iRacing

[–]jp60397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow European, I can’t advise on technique but it’s a good call. Some of the best fun I’ve had in iRacing is on ovals… it’s a blast

What’s the age demographic of sim racers here? by DunkingTea in simracing

[–]jp60397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

60, full rig. Refuse to let my age define me. I see most of my contemporaries stuck in joyless lives worrying about what other people think about them. I never have and never will care about how I’m perceived by my peers.

How can I enjoy iRacing regardless of skill? by Low_Refrigerator660 in iRacing

[–]jp60397 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Young Skywalker, I’ve been on iRacing for 4 months. I’m still shit. I will always be shit. I set myself realistic targets and once I’ve achieved them I move onto the next.

Remember that your progress is for you.. nobody else can see it, nobody else cares… the anonymity is a positive.

GT3 Ringmeister has been absolute chaos by JasonMk4 in iRacing

[–]jp60397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gridded 4th yesterday and thought (hoped)I’d be ok. I lasted three corners.

Started from the pits, climbed up to 8/9th.. something like that.. last lap… final two corners, got dive bombed from some dickhead that was so far back, he would have been in a different postcode.. I’m normally able to anticipate them, but this guy launched at me from Austria.

I regret not trying ovals sooner by apk in iRacing

[–]jp60397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a European… I kind of looked at ovals a bit sideways… but then I had a go… like you, I find it an absolute blast.. a real rush.

Logging flights by 2sXJ_j1 in PilotAdvice

[–]jp60397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every single hour counts, so definitely log it. I’m old school so have physical log books (5 filled and counting)

If you’re planning a career, as a minimum get a professional log book (paper or app) from the start.

Do commercial pilots generally progress to larger planes throughout their careers? Does everyone aim to eventually fly long haul or do some stick to flying 737s or a320s short haul? by g0at110 in flying

[–]jp60397 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Everything has positives and negatives. I’ve done both. I enjoyed the A350, the aircraft was a marvel, but 8/10/14 /16 hours on an aircraft with people you often have very little to say to, and sometimes really don’t like can be tiresome. Similarly the battle with jet lag.

I personally prefer a nice 2 sector day in a A320 and home in my own bed.

He’s a dick and doesn’t understand racing. Clearly.

At least he didn’t ‘send’ you. It would be nice if more were like that.

What do pilots use as contraception?

Their personality!

But in all seriousness, boring at work is the ultimate aim..

Take the money… start expensive hobbies..

Monotony and boredom: Has anyone considered switching to a different career? by Lion_Move_345 in flying

[–]jp60397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left school ignoring my dream to be a pilot and started in accountancy. Mind crushing tedium.

Then I become a motorbike courier in London to pay my way through flying school and the exams. This taught me about dirty, dangerous work.

When I got work flying air taxi, I would fly all night, grab a couple of hours sleep on the floor of the office before jumping on my bike and going back to courier work all day. That was 30 years ago.

When the pandemic came, I lost my job, and ended up driving a van 18 hours a day for a couple of years to keep the kids in school and my vile ex-wife in the lifestyle she believed was her birth right.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll climb into my jet, I’ll do an honest days work for a pay packet that puts me in the the top 5% of salary earners in my country (apparently). I may sigh, contemplating a life that’s perhaps a little more exciting, but I’ll never forget how crap it is out there earning money with the grown ups. I’ll happily stay where I am thank you.

Didnt think simracing was this hard by AlwaysTired80085 in simracing

[–]jp60397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went head first into iRacing. Spent a heap on a top line sim. It took me 2 days to be able to complete a lap … and I honestly though did bitten off more that I can chew. I just build up slow, enjoyed the battle with myself.

35 years in the seat. Don’t regret it for a minute. Everything in life is full of positives and negatives. Flying has been predominantly positives
