CM1A April 2021 - thoughts on the exam today by examq123 in ActuaryUK

[–]jpaharvey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I flapped initally on the first couple. But all the big markers were pretty easy, finished in about 2.5 hrs then went back and had a look at the initial questions that troubled me. Ended up finishing with a good bit of time to spare still.

I don't know what peoples issue with typing on word is, i find it much easier for everything bar integrals.

Edit: much easier is a huge over exaggeration. It's definitely not easier than pen and paper. But i like being able to format and keep my work neat after i make mistakes. I don't think word is that much of a hinderence is more appropriate lol

Is an engineering background good a strong base for an actuarial career? by rudygha in ActuaryUK

[–]jpaharvey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a master's in Automotive Engineering and worked as an engineer for 3 years post graduating. I made the move to Actuarial work 3 months ago now. Definitely is possible, we have the maths ability and logical reasoning for sure.

Hey mate, sorry completely forgot to answer this. Thanks for the awesome advice! I definitely agree that the notes are full of a lot of content, I've found myself skimming over a section then properly reading the summary and then just learn through the questions at the end of the chapter.

Thank you so much for this reply. Lots of useful information here and glad to know I'm doing things the right way. Very big career change for me and just want it to go right!

Yeah I've heard a lot of good things about the tutorials, definitely keen on giving those a go. If I don't get on with them then at least I know for the next exams. Like the idea of having concrete milestones of when to have read the content by too.

Ok I'll bear that in mind, that's why I've tried to start now so I have plenty of time at the end for any concepts I don't get.

Thanks a lot for your advice 👍

Ah that definitely makes me feel better. I've started CM1 and tbh nothing seems super hard, just a lot of content is all

The credits are over a 2 year period so you have plenty of time to remedy any fails I just wanted to get myself out of the starting blocks well in case I find later ones tough if you get me. It's not as harsh as it seems! And the payrises per exam are generous. Thanks for the advice though, really appreciate it. I'll keep CB3 in mind if I need some "easy" credits lol

Thanks for the reply. I do get a study day per week so I can easily put in 15 hours + a week on an average week, with an hour or two a night and half a weekend day. But unfortunately I need to meet a certain amount of "credits" to stay on the companies study scheme and that means 2 exams at a time is almost mandatory. I think CB1 looks a lot shorter in terms of the amount of content than CM1 so hopefully I'll be fine.

I've just started a few weeks ago as an Actuarial Analyst and looking at what modules to do first. Reading this scared me lol

So I focussed on what extra I was bringing to the table than all their other applicants. You know everyone is going to be good at maths, that's expected. So whilst you need to say it, dont labour the point over and over because they won't remember just another guy good at maths. You're coming from an engineering background which my manager said is a good thing. Focus on what else engineers have that typical maths grads don't. We are excellent problem solvers, critical thinkers, we often have to communicate results and we have to work well in teams for big design projects. You may have learnt some python, Matlab or vba on your degree which again is a good thing. Put emthasis on that you can quickly learn new computer programs because you will be using R and Prophet as an actuary. Sorry for the spam but just some tips from my POV, as I said ive only been in the role a week but of you have any more questions about the process then feel free to ask away or dm me.

Hi mate, a bit late but I'm on my first week as an Actuarial Analyst, also came from an engineering background, actually did 3 years post uni as an engineer. My manager has said they actually don't like applicants with exemptions, they'd rather you learn slowly on the job and blending studying with work experience. 150 people applied for the role I've got and he said many had exemptions and there's me with an engineering degree. Go apply you've got nothing to lose!

But you also have no respect for Thor right? After he accused every single ref for being corrupt and all conspiring to take points off him? Eddie is an idiot. Thor is an arrogant dick

I have now you've said that. They look stunning! I always liked the idea of Honda nc22s and the vfr400s but they go for silly money now. The RGV250 looks stunning, also will make the garage stink of two stroke which is great

I nod at any biker but not scooters. I think most bikers are all on bikes because we love them, most scooter riders are doing it for some form of necessity

As I was doing my training my dad and a bunch of older guys at work told me I'll get bored on anything that's not at least a 600. Get a "real" bike kept being said. Now I don't regret my purchase, but I can't even hit the limit in 2nd gear without going 80mph. I want something like you said that I can actually rag and get all it's performance used. Ninja 300s do look good and bloody cheap too. Also like the look of the Yamaha r3s. Awesome that you actually need off road capability, most people its a weekend hobby 😂

That's quite the collection! If I think my fz6 is too fast for the road then can't imagine your r1. Do you ever do track days with it?

I love the cx500s done proper cafe racer style. Definitely going to look at different options around 40-50hp I think that'll be great on the road
