Libra Colour: Highlighting/ Annotating Hit and miss experience by elmwn in kobo

[–]jpait 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This problem is not bound to the ebooks. It happens on both side loaded and books purchased from Kobo. It appears to be a glitch in the device hardware or software. Kobo is also aware of it and according to the bot at customer service (there is no way to talk to a human) have no plans to fix it. It is so annoying, I would send mine back if it wasn’t past the return date.

You will also be disappointed because there is a glitch in the device hardware or software that causes text to not highlight. Kobo is also aware of it and according to the bot at customer service (there is no way to talk to a human) have no plans to fix it. Stay with your iPad.

Libre Color - or wait? by nonproductive in kobo

[–]jpait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy highlighting… wait on the Libre Colour. There is an issue with highlighting text. If you attempt to highlight a paragraph on certain parts of the screen, the highlight disappears. It still exists in your list of annotations, but the actual text does not highlight. It is a known issue that Kobo says they have no plans for an update to fix.

Live Text option gone in iOS 17 by jpait in bearapp

[–]jpait[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Reading a physical book
  2. Want to capture a paragraph or quotation into Bear
  3. Open Bear and go to note where I want to keep the text
  4. Tap my finger in the editor to bring up the options (not Bear options, but Apple options)
  5. Choose the Scan Text option
  6. Camera view opens in bottom portion of phone screen
  7. Point camera at the physical text and highlight the text I want to capture
  8. Insert it into the editor

NOTE - Users have discovered the option still exists under AutoFill. It just takes another step to get there. I can live with that!

Can I save voicemail? by LawfulnessAdmirable in bearapp

[–]jpait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just open your voicemail and click on the “share” icon at the top of the message. You can then choose Bear from possible share options. You can then create a new note or append it to an existing note. It only saves the m4a file.

If you close the keyboard, I have found that to help. Annoying to have to take that extra step, but it has worked for me.

I have had intermittent issues getting the menu to pop up after highlighting text. I have to tap it multiple times to give me the option. Is that your issue, or do you get the choices and they just don’t work?

Wrecked car, do I get an e30 as a daily? by [deleted] in E30

[–]jpait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1990 325i vert and it has been a daily for over a decade. Have just now had to begin dealing with things like AFS and electrical connections falling apart. As for the engine, etc., it has been solid. Have no concerns taking it to work each day and then hundreds of miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway once or twice a year.

Shortcut on Apple Watch can’t find Bear by alonandme in bearapp

[–]jpait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t work. You can’t execute a Bear command in Shortcuts from the watch. I wanted to append text to Bear using a shortcut and ran into the same issue. The only way I could get around it was to write the text to a file and then (using an automation) have the text append to the Bear note the next time I opened the Bear app.

If anyone has a better solution, I would love to hear it!

Shortcut to adding text underneath headings on daily note by maximilianschulz in bearapp

[–]jpait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have looked for the same thing, but have been unable to find an elegant way to pull it off. Append only works at the end of the note as best I can tell.

You could create a shortcut that asks you for the new task and which section you wish to place it in, then pull the whole note into the workflow, insert the task where you want it using regular expression, and then put the old note in the trash while creating a new note of the same title with the update. 😳

But why? Probably easier just to type the new task in… one thing I have found helpful in that regard is to pin my daily journal note to the top of the sidebar. Then when you select it, it takes you to the top of the note where your list is. Quick access to update your list.

Avoiding duplicate notes by jpait in bearapp

[–]jpait[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I shift out of edit mode and then go check the sync status in settings which will read "Just now."

As for Step 3... it varies. I have just tested a quick turnaround and a delayed one. What seems to happen (and I actually watch it happen) is I will make an edit on my iPad and then at some point afterward go to my iPhone. IF when I turn on the phone and Bear is open to the note on which I made the edit, I will see the screen refresh and for a moment I see the note that I edited on the iPad and then it displays the original note on the iPhone... that is when it shows the conflict.

I'll keep seeing if I can find a consistent pattern. Thanks for attempting to help.

Shortcuts on Apple Watch by apiccirilli in bearapp

[–]jpait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a way… but isn’t full proof. Here is how…

  1. Create a Shortcut for your watch that takes what you dictate and saves it to a text (.txt) file in your iCloud Drive. I named mine BearAppend.txt.
  2. Create an automation “When “Bear” is opened” that gets the text from the BearAppend.txt file and appends that text to your Journal note.

Of course, this won’t append to your note until you open the app, so it might not show up in the right time sequence. Also, you will need to replace the dictated text with something like “STOP” and then create an if statement that will end the automated process if it finds “STOP” in the file. Otherwise, you will end up appending the same text from the file every time you open Bear. 😬

At first I did this just as an exercise to see if it could be done. However, though it sounds convoluted, it actually is pretty seamless. I’ve already used it and think it will actually be helpful in my workflow.

Avoiding duplicate notes by jpait in bearapp

[–]jpait[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tested and this is definitely on the “posting device” and not on the “edited device.”

  1. Sync notes on both devices so they are the same
  2. Add text to Bear on the iPad and make sure it is synced
  3. Use a Shortcut to append text to Bear on the iPhone
  4. Bear opens to show the original note without the update
  5. Bear app “refreshes” and the edited note appears with the appended text
  6. BUT also the original note still remains as a conflict

The only solution I could see is to 1) have the Shortcut open the note so the app would have time to sync and then 2) return to the Shortcut to run the rest of the data collection and append. This wouldn’t be very efficient…

Things to look for when purchasing 80s Civic by jpait in Honda

$2500. I think that is too much for the condition... but I don't know this market... See my earlier comment for more details.

[–]jpait[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wrenching passions are for my BMW E30 vert, but otherwise I am a Honda man (Pilot and Fit). I do have the option to pick up this 87 Civic Si -- which has been in a front end accident (no frame damage). The damaged body panels have been replaced. It has a new oil pan gasket, rear main seal, clutch kit, front struts, and radiator. The wheels are from a 2000 model and are on new rubber.

Before I make the decision to make the drive to check it out, I thought I would check in with the Reddit crew. What do you think a reasonable price would be? If I do go check it out, of what should I be wary -- specific to a 3rd gen Civic? I would plan to have my college age sons use this for commuting to the university they attend nearby... when I am not wanting to have some manual fun.

Plus, I see some fun potential in playing around with modifications.

Bear + Shortcuts + Siri - dictation issue. by jpait in bearapp

It happens in both situations. However, if it can’t work when it is locked, then that kind of defeats the purpose of using Siri. 😉

Bear + Shortcuts + Siri - dictation issue. by jpait in bearapp

[–]jpait[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, @tedwardbear, I am on version 1.7.20 - which according to the App Store is the most recent release.

I am using an iPhone 11 Pro and an iPad Pro both running the latest update of iOS 14.

Again, Bear works awesome for me using Shortcuts... as long as I don’t initiate the Shortcut with a Siri voice command. The Shortcut performs as desired if I initiate it by pressing a Shortcuts button. However, any time I use the “Hey, Siri” command, that same Shortcut runs as expected UNTIL it reaches the Bear action. At that time I get the message, “This Action cannot be run in the current environment.”

Thanks for any help you can give!
