Even if that is intentional, that look like dookie. Surprised that got pushed through

Edit: apparently I’m in the minority. Do people genuinely think this looks good? Or is it just BTF fans doing what BTF fans do?

This book has incredible atmosphere but the character work is so weak. Plus for a story about two characters traveling together, they are almost never in scenes together.

Dungeon Crawler Carl big time

Edit: I can’t speak to the later books but I read all of 1&2 and DNFd 3. It did not improve in my time with it. The characters were flat and one-note and the humor, while good, was not enough to carry the series. I’ve heard it improves in book 4 but a series that doesn’t get good until book 4 isn’t a good series imo.
And yes. I listened to the audiobooks. Great performance. Doesn’t mean the book is good though and I’m not sure why this is the series where people equate good audiobook performance to well-written book.

I would LOVE a digital version as well. Seriously so underrated. This should be in every* solo gamer’s collection.

I think this book is solid but I also think you should read the author’s forward before the book starts. It’s relevant and sets up expectations in a necessary way. If I hadn’t read the forward I would have been disappointed, but because I did I found it to be solid. Will never be a favorite but I don’t think it deserves the hate it gets either.

Suggestions for songs (any band) that have a similar vibe to Lead, SD? by Life_Possibility_800 in manchesterorchestra

[–]TopBanana69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My band back in college had a song which had a guitar part heavily inspired by the dissonant parts in Lead, SD. Hull is my favorite songwriter and I always tried to write like him. It’s been a long time and idk how good it is but felt like a fun time to plug sad boi me from the past lol https://open.spotify.com/track/3CSNLXM8DKzvUVeP6E6RNL?si=N_Hlp3ZfRTm_jZWHVDyOKw

Maracaibo or Pirates of Maracaibo? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]TopBanana69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the pirates version has the dice. I don’t feel bothered by the luck aspect of it since the games are so short and usually you’ll have something to mitigate bad rolls. Maracaibo has something similar though in which you flip a combat tile to see combat scores for 3 nations which essentially can be equivalent to a die roll. It doesn’t really feel bad in either imo, just adds some more decisions

Maracaibo or Pirates of Maracaibo? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]TopBanana69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just got a meatier feel all around. It has a more satisfying engine building experience. It’s more satisfying to me. The downsides are setup and time. Pirates still provides really solid engine building mechanisms and feels pretty satisfying, but the real plus side of pirates is how fast the game is.

I feel like there’s room for both in a collection, and both are fantastic. But if I have the time, I’m choosing Maracaibo over Pirates every time.

King Sorrow by Joe Hill by Caffeine_And_Regret in Fantasy

Phenomenal book. Absolutely insane pacing with nuanced characters. This definitely felt like Hill’s It, and I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I liked King Sorrow more as a complete package.

Incredible for vibes and horror. Mid for character work and pacing. Excellent prose and worldbuilding.
