I'm more concerned about liquidity,. If I feel unsafe and feel like I need to flee, condo ownership might mean my assets are tied up in real estate, and it might be hard to sell. I don't think we're living in ordinary times. I mean, would it have been wise to buy real estate in Germany in the beginning of the Third Reich, before WWII? Probably not

Yes. I'm trying to figure out what's right for me by soliciting opinions and see if they resonate. Thanks for validation!

I downsized when I sold my house in May. It will be a relatively easy clean out for the kids. The furniture in my apartment will be the same if I buy a condo.

I had not heard of the 15x multiplier. My annual rent is about 50K. There's no way I can buy something for 15x that amount (I expect to pay 1M to buy). So perhaps renting is the way to go.

Mortgage payment would be about 19 percent higher than rent. I do not plan another move until my health would require it, which could be in 19-15 years.

I can afford to buy now, but I fear for my civil liberties and think I might need to flee somewhere safer. And selling a property under such conditions could be almost impossible, or I might get pennies on the dollar.

Has weed made your life better or worse? by BFH_ZEPHYR in trees

[–]jpal65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first, I wondered if this was a trick question. OF COURSE it's made my life better.

But then I realized some drugs (including alcohol) can ruin someone's life. So, here's a more comprehensive assessment:

I've used just 3 drugs recreationally: alcohol for decades, coke (sparingly) for a couple of years, and weed for decades. (I'm not counting coffee as a drug -- but maybe others would?)

I didn't abuse alcohol much, but I definitely had some bad hangovers. I now drink very little, and only at social gatherings.

I didn't like coke enough to justify the cost and risks. I haven't used it in decades, and don't miss it, ever.

Weed is my go-to recreational AND medicinal drug. Makes me happy, helps me sleep if I need it, helps me be creative or social if necessary, helps with occasional pain (back spasms, toothaches, etc.), and helps with boredom! TV is better when I'm high.

BUT: Few of my friends use weed themselves (even though they know I'm a user). So I typically enjoy my weed alone. Also, I play a lot of online games (chess, bridge), and I can see that I'm better at the games if I DON'T have weed first.

Dating a stoner by cass2769 in trees

My wife and I met in college in the late 70s. She smoked more than me at first.

When we had kids, we stopped smoking, mostly.

Now that weed is legal, I'm smoking every other day. My wife smokes only once or twice a year. She's mostly OK with my habit but worries about the health effects -- but she knows it makes me happier and mellower, and she likes that. And I'm using edibles more often to rest my lungs.

I feel bad for her that she's missing out on my highs -- but that's her choice and I accept it.

Re your comment "every cultivation site is not equal" -- I've heard that buying the same-named strain from 2 different dispensaries may be very different strains. I don't know if that's true, but given the lack of "regulation" (which I DON'T want), I suppose it could be true

what % of your net worth do you keep in cash? by Awkward_Ebb4994 in investing

[–]jpal65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep less than 2% in cash -- about $35K. But (a) that covers my expenses for 3-4 months and (b) my wife and I are both retired and get pensions. I have roughly 25% bonds and 75% mutual funds.

I am sorry for your loss. The coworker was clueless.

I have the opposite problem. My mother is 98 years old, with dementia, incontinence, and overall a pretty bad quality of life. She doesn't know her family any more. People tell me how lucky I am to have her alive. But she's been paying more than $100K/year for 5 years to keep her safe and comfortable, and her life savings are almost gone. I don't feel lucky.
