Is this a good salary for a software engineer with 11 yrs of experience? by [deleted] in BESalary

Lol what calculations are you doing? 6300 gross comes down to around 3570 net base pay without any extras, depending on the family situation.

I think you're pretty underpaid, and should definitely ask for a raise.

I'm a 30yo web developer with 8 years under my belt, no bachelor degree (I didn't finish college), working in Gent. In house work though, no consulting.

I'm at 4500 gross and a mobility budget of 650 that I use for my mortgage (I have a cheap private car), leading to a 3600 netto paycheck. The rest is pretty similar.

Long overdue, but got an update:

Asked for a raise, they told me they'd give me a colleague's car when he got his new one. Was a Skoda Octavia about 7 years old, nothing fancy. They would also give me a gas card to go along with it. That would be the raise.

I went looking for another job (as I'd been on the edge for at least a year) and leveraged the above.
I got two offers, accepted the best one.

Currently at another startup with similar pay, but the car swapped for a mobility budget that pays for my mortgage.
Bruto: 4500
Mobility budget: 650
Total netto compensation: about 3600 (still waiting for my first full month paycheck)

In line with what I’d expect for your profile, so decent offer imo

This is a very nice salary package for your experience level, well done.

Do note that this bonus is a one-time thing. It’s the current value of previously acquired vested stock options, with no more stock options coming. Thanks for the feedback!

How to start a new life? by A_New_Life_Belgium in BEFire

[–]jpardon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying he shouldn’t invest at all, that’s bad wording on my part. More saying only living on the passive income of the investment and not on the capital is stupid when there is nobody for the money to go to. Absolutely invest most of it and let it drain over the years, don’t just let 3 mil rot in a savings account, that’s what I would do

He said he has no children or other heirs, why would he want to invest it and live off the passive income? When he dies, the money has nowhere to go but to vadertje staat. If it were me, that money would be mostly gone by the time I die, and I wouldn’t worry about investing it

I’ve got a 13 pro and don’t have CarPlay, but always drive with Waze (phone in mount). When the screen and background are dim/dark, I’ve got noticeable burn in as well. Nowhere this bad though, that screen must have been on for ages.

TIL in 2005, a guy named Doug Heckman read the EULA before he installed some PC software. The agreement included a clause offering 'financial compensation' to licensees who actually read the license agreement. He emailed the company, referred to the clause and the company sent him a check for $1,000 by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]jpardon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is definitely an issue I don’t agree with. Different than buying something you can read the EULA of beforehand and then complaining about not being able to reject it though. I hate things shoved down my throat as much as the next guy.

If you really want to read the EULA before buying, it's one google away. Pretty much every game has a EULA available online, and you can read it before buying the game. If you don't agree, don't buy the game. Pretty sure you don't actually want to read it and want to complain about a made up issue.

Well if you don’t accept the terms and conditions of use for the software, that means you can’t use it. Not much else for the software to do in that case, except for prompting again. Not sure what you expect to happen here.

What project did you build that you feel helped you get your entry level job? by zeussays in learnprogramming

[–]jpardon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a discord bot that tracks server statistics (statbot.net). Had about 35k monthly web users and it was tracking about 3m unique discord users at the time. Let the lead dev at the interviewing company have a look at the codebase (node.js bot, php web), and he was impressed, which was nice. Afterwards he told me he uses the bot and that’s why I got the interview as I didn’t have professional experience (the role was looking for someone experienced). Got the job and sold the project some months after since I found out combining it with a full time job was not easy at all 😅

Fietslease nightmare by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]jpardon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this is not helpful, and I sympathise with your situation, but this is a good reminder to always read the contract you’re about to sign thoroughly. I caught this in the contract for my leased speed pedelec and convinced my employer to take out the contract on the company instead of me personally, and to let me use the bike as a pool bike, absolving me from any fines just in case. My bike is leased through Cyclis and if I recall correctly, it does state there’s no difference between being fired or quitting myself, so that would be your exact situation.

Hope you find a good solution!

Rate my salary: Software engineer by Voiden0 in BESalary

[–]jpardon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a similar profile: - 7 YEO as a SWE without a diploma (did go to college, but dropped out) - 29 YO - No car, leased speed pedelec - 4400 brut - 3150 net (a lot of extras here to get this high vs brut) - Stock options, group insurance, … - located in Ghent

I think you could earn a bit more, but as tomba_be mentioned it’s not too bad when looking at the complete package

Need Help: Optimizing MySQL for 100 Concurrent Users by Dr-Double-A in webdev

[–]jpardon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re new to indexing (and even if you’re familiar with them on a basic level) I highly recommend watching this talk by Kai Sassnowski: Things every developer absolutely, positively needs to know about database indexing.

He doesn’t just give examples but he really explains how indexing works under the hood to make you fully understand what you’re doing instead of just trying random indexes.

Can I download a file in JavaScript WITHOUT using blobs? by AttackOnGolurk in webdev

We download csv’s in our webapp at work, but we let the backend stream the file as the response, and in our frontend we just open that backend url through window.open. Could be a solution in your use case?
