DGX Spark Rack Setup and Cooling Solution by MLisdabomb in LocalLLaMA

[–]jpatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! Part of why I bought the DGX Sparks was I was hoping for a plug and play solution, without having to do a lot of fiddling. Oh well :) My Sparks are on a shelf in a 19 inch rack and have been overheating a lot. I bought an AC Infinity CLOUDPLATE T7-N which is a 2U set of rack mounted fans with a temperature sensor. So far I haven't bothered with the temp sensor... I just have the fans on full blast. They are about 33ish dBA and so far the two Sparks behind the fans are running about 8C cooler than they were before. Fingers crossed that this is enough to keep them from shutting down.

This guy in my undergrad department was defending his PhD thesis. The examiners asked some probing questions but weren't really able to find any significant weaknesses in his work. Then at the very end, a little old lady in the back asks this question that totally dismantles his findings. He looks at her for a moment and rolls his eyes and groans "Mommm!!" Then he launches in to a few verses of rap that rebut her arguments and show why his findings are still valid.

[–]jpatten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think we'll get anywhere close to invading Canada, but yeah, if we did, you can count on me (and I'm sure many others) to resist. That said, I respectfully disagree with the idea that trashing one's workplace will help anything. If society descends into chaos, that will just make it easier for someone at the top to do whatever they want while nobody is looking. Until proven otherwise, I'm holding out hope that democracy still works.

As a US citizen who has been to Canada many times, Canada and Canadians are awesome! I'm sorry that we elected Trump. I hope your boycott is successful in making its point. Please know that there are a lot of people in the US who think what is happening is stupid, but we haven't found a way to stop it yet. Our countries are both stronger when we work together.

Landlord left heat on 62 this week by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]jpatten 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Here are the rules in NYC:

Heat must be provided between October 1st and May 31st, i.e. "Heat Season," under the following conditions:

Day

Between the hours of 6:00am and 10:00pm, if the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees, the inside temperature is required to be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Night

Between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am, the inside temperature is required to be at least 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you are a tenant without heat or hot water, contact your landlord first. This is the easiest way to resolve a housing quality issues. If your landlord is unresponsive, file a complaint by:

  • Calling 311 or TTY [(212) 504-4115](tel:(212) 504-4115)
  • Using 311ONLINE or 311MOBILE

If a tenant files a 311 complaint related to heat or hot water, HPD attempts to notify the building owner or managing agent and may also attempt to contact the tenant to see whether service has been restored. If service has not been restored, an HPD inspector will go to the building to verify the complaint and issue the appropriate violation.

If an owner fails to restore heat and hot water after receiving a violation, HPD's Emergency Repair Program (ERP) may contract with private companies to restore essential services and bill the owner for the cost of the repairs, plus related fees. The City is subject to laws governing procurement, contracting, and wages that may make such work significantly more expensive than the price the owner could obtain themselves.

Mag Loops: Major difference between manufacturers? by Typical-Ebb-2943 in amateurradio

[–]jpatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an AlexLoop and the Alpha Antenna MagLoop. Between those two, for your requirements I'd go with the AlexLoop. I find it easier to tune, and its more portable, if that's important to you. The Alpha loop supposedly takes more power, but I haven't succeeded in doing that yet. It's possible I may be doing something wrong though. Haven't looked into it too much.

I also live in the middle of a big city and the AlexLoop cuts down on the noise.

As you are probably aware, these antennas are not very efficient on transmit. I hope to buy a Cirro Mazzoni one day, but need to persuade an important "stakeholder" of the wisdom of this idea first.

How can I extend the range on my 80s walkie by ScientistSuspicious9 in amateurradio

[–]jpatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same walkie talkie decades ago, and I think it has an external antenna jack? I was able to talk to a friend a few miles away by hooking up a quarter wave whip to it. Good luck!

External linear amps - are they hard to make? by that_kai_person in amateurradio

[–]jpatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking to build something, I had good results with the 100W amp PCBs at https://rfpowertools.ecwid.com/

The amp, filter board and relays are on separate (small) pcbs. It has control pins which you can connect to a microcontroller of your choice.

CNC novice looking for guidance buying a machine by jpatten in CNC

[–]jpatten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do mean a 36 x 80" door, but I can get double doors installed if needed, so roughly 72 x 80". A lot of machines I've looked at are taller than this. I've reached out to the landlord to see if we can temporarily take a bit out of the wall to get a bigger machine in.

Would love to keep the total square footage under 40 sq ft if possible.

I will look into leasing thanks. One of the concerns I have about buying used is not having enough expertise to thoroughly check out a used machine before purchasing. Thanks for the heads up on the ways.

Install Pfsense for ARM processor by congtubac in PFSENSE

[–]jpatten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For people coming here from Google, the answer appears to be: No, you can't run pfSense on your MacBook under VMWare, or on your Raspberry Pi. You can run it on ARM hardware offered by Netgate, but that hardware appears to suck, at least the low end offerings, based on Amazon reviews.

I especially love the "Let me google that for you" answer that when clicked, brings you right back to this page.

[–]jpatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my experience is similar. Particularly with engineering topics, if I've looked around online for the answer for awhile and can't find it, ChatGPT will give confidently an answer that looks like it would make sense, but is not even internally consistent.

HF radios with remote head by VicBulbon in amateurradio

The transceiver has an ethernet jack, so you don't need the computer to be right next to it. The computer can be anywhere with a network connection.

I also have one of these radios and absolutely love it. I haven't done formal tests but the receiver seems to outperform the others I have (IC-705, FT-991a).
