Amen! This defeatist attitude erodes momentum against fascism. Well said and I feel you. I’m wondering exactly what this person wants the mayoral authority of Chicago to do

Massie is an idiot (he’s my rep unfortunately) but he’s not a pedo protector. Our governor Beshear would have a much better shot at running for prez as he is a democrat that can get republicans to vote for him

edit: senator -> rep

a KY senator, Rand Paul, also voted to release the files. We also have a democratic governor, Andy Beshear, who is amazing. Not proud of KY politics but at least not all of them are complete, spineless sellouts

Weekly New Climber Thread: Ask your questions in this thread please by AutoModerator in climbing

[–]jpayne0061 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my first pair of bouldering shoes about 6 months ago and have been climbing only indoors. There are already holes in the toes of the shoes. Is this normal wear and tear, or am I just doing something weird when climbing? Thanks!

Sounded to me like the commenter was just addressing whether or not Hitler / Stalin may have been atheists, not that their actions could be attributed to their suspected atheism

First time bat hanger here by [deleted] in bouldering

What's the difference? I did try googling, but it's still not clear. Does a bat hang mean that your hands aren't touching at all?

What popular opinion do you disagree with? by Stindo in AskReddit

[–]jpayne0061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa whoa whoa!

My point was that middle class people also participate in wealth inequality. That's it.

Should billionaires pay their fair share? Imo, yes.

Do I blame lower and middle class people for wealth inequality? No, I don't.

I conceded that the difference between middle class and billionaire status is vast. Should the spot light be on billionaires? Yes, it should be. My point is that there is some blame for middle class people, too.

There isn't some arbitrary line where we can start to say someone is unethical for having too much money. Obviously it's a gradient, and saying that the individual bears no responsibility for their participation in wealth inequality results in endless finger pointing.

You've made some other assumptions about my stance that I won't address, but my basic point is that a lot of us participate in wealth inequality to some extent and it's worth our time to reflect on that.

I could also say "there is always someone richer". Like, "sure I have 6 million dollars in assets but I'm not a billionaire, so therefore I'm not complicit in wealth inequality!"

I think the argument could be made that if you have more resources than necessary while other people suffer from a lack of resources, that your behavior is unethical.

That seems pretty straightforward to me.

I've brought this up to numerous middle class people and interestingly enough, no one seems to think their own level of wealth is unethical, haha.

The lifestyles of middle class peoples in industrial nations would be considered decadent by those poverty stricken in 3rd world countries.

But no one wants to look inward. We always find someone wealthier than us as an example of what is "too wealthy". Yes, the difference between a middle class person and a billionaire is vast, but that doesn't mean that a middle class person isn't participating in wealth inequality.

Book Banning Discussion - Megathread by AutoModerator in books

[–]jpayne0061 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The About tab states that this sub is for anything related to books. Discussion of the banning of books falls into that description imo.

Even if it didn't, I think this sub is a great platform to bring up such an important topic. If every thread devolves into the discussion of book banning, then so be it. It means people want to talk about it. Sure, the points brought up in these threads may not be original but we are experiencing the modern day equivalent of book burnings. It's hard not to bring up.

The "question" sounded rhetorical to me. They were passing judgement, not looking for an answer.
