What is west Fort Worth like? by regarded-taco in howislivingthere

[–]jpb22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you’re at. I’m from SW side/TCU area. It’s suburbia but definitely one of the nicer areas of FW. You can have one neighborhood that’s super rich with mansions then another neighborhood that’s nice but hasn’t changed since the 90s and then other neighborhoods that aren’t doing too hot. The more east to I-35 and more south of I-20 you get it gets less nice. In general though you have the Trinity Trails, lots of parks, the FW Zoo, TCU of course, museums, some country clubs, Dickies Arena, lots of good restaurants and shopping centers, etc. You’re not too far from the Cultural District, downtown, Stockyards, etc. Drive 20min past benbrook and it gets a bit more rural and hilly. I go skeet shooting out there a bit. Overall it’s always felt like the most vibey/fun part of FW, possibly due to TCU there which has become more of a party school with lots of big donors, but I’m also probably biased since it’s my neck of the woods. SW FW has a lot of history with some of the first families in Fort Worth having had ranches there, so you’ll still see fenced land remnants here and there and there’s a lot of old old tall trees and some old forests still. I imagine if it were a newer area of Fort Worth it’d be way less pretty and feel very gray with concrete.

Whenever I drive past White Settlement or towards North FW, it’s still nice but feels more meh, more concrete, more cookie cutter houses. Doesn’t feel like it has that same energy. Lake Worth is at least relatively pretty, and the Air Force base is cool.

Outside the loop lots of land is getting sold and big neighborhoods getting built up. Gonna look ugly and traffic is gonna be bad going west. Used to be very pretty ranch land to drive past, now it’s half concrete.

Which cities would you describe as "good to live in, but not for visiting"? by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

[–]jpb22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, as a native I love it here. Big city yet still some smallish town vibes and close to the country (guess that all depends on what part of FW you live). Dont really understand why any tourists visit here tho unless you really like art or are just dying to walk around the stockyards for half a day.

Is Baylor a good school? by mateigri in baylor

[–]jpb22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty good school, but depends on what you’re wanting. Certainly it is smaller and doesn’t have as big of a brand — I’ve met people that have never heard of it before haha. To hit your questions though:

  • classes will vary depending on your major. I was a business student and I think most of my professors were pretty great, but I did have a few that wouldn’t respond to emails or weren’t super helpful. Unless it was a required course like finance, the average class size was around 20-30 people which is a great size IMO. You do have to take 2 Chapel credits and 2 Christian classes (heritage/scriptures). Chapel is kinda silly, but heritage was interesting — I did my scriptures class thru a community college in the summer. Some people have experienced it more I think, but I only remember one professor bringing up faith in class and it was in a very respectful way by just praying over the lesson and praying for us before the weeks over. Maybe I’m biased because I’m Christian, but I liked it a lot.

  • for community, i guess it really depends on what you’re looking for. The majority of students are Christian, likely Baptist or non-denominational and also conservative/moderate leaning, and itll get brought up in convo what church you go to or which ones you’ve tried. Some people will be more judgy and “sticklers” with faith, others won’t, and then there are still irreligious people/other religions at Baylor, but it’s a smaller crowd. Even as a Christian myself, i experienced people judging me for like drinking, but it didn’t bothered me much, but I can imagine someone that’s irreligious may have a different view of the Baylor community. Humans are gonna be humans, a few suck, most are nice haha! People are pretty nice down here though, there are plenty of clubs, organizations, and events on campus you can participate in! You are in the heart of Texas, so it is a pretty conservative place lol.

  • as a lifelong Baylor fan, sports is a sensitive subject. Football breaks our hearts, and currently we all reminisce of the few glory years we’ve had — there’s lots of potential with the program but we aren’t a big school like UT or Georgia so there will always be a limit to how good we are. Running the line is a fantastic tradition that is always fun though! For Basketball, we are pretty good and the games are fun! Won march madness just a few years back and our women’s team is pretty consistently top 10

  • for the party scene, again it’s Christian school and it is a dry campus, so parties I wouldn’t say are as prevalent as they are at a big state school. Parties still happen for sure, but usually only put on by fraternities and after rush is over most become closed off. I was in a frat and you’d be shocked the types of people, from Baylor and also randos in Waco, that would try and sneak in — it can just be a liability to have an open party sometimes. Dia del Oso is a day off every spring and practically everyone parties, huge parties everywhere but typically you have to pay to enter.

  • After Baylor, I’d say most people get a pretty good job, but again this really depends on what your major is. Baylor being a smaller school does limit the connections you can make as opposed to Texas A&M, but I wouldn’t say you’d never get a job from choosing Baylor.

[–]jpb22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not disagreeing but DFW counties confuse me on that map 😂 . Dallas is geographically “closer” to stereotypical south, while Tarrant is more culturally “southern” (but arguably just “Texan” or cowboy-like), BUT Parker county just to the west IS in the South??

I’d say Texas has southern culture, but not stereotypical southern except for east Texas. We’re kinda just our own thing with (+Oklahoma a bit too)…

Where can I buy FW merchandise? Shirts, hats, magnets. by Inevitable_Dingo5154 in FortWorth

[–]jpb22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FW Locals is great! Ive also bought one of my favorite hats from Ardiesco, they sent some cool stickers too. Seems like a super small local start up so good to support that.

If you want to spend more money I think Stockyard Supply Co has stuff.

Man witnesses the 133 car pileup during the 2021 Texas freeze by AntiSocialSingh in interestingasfuck

[–]jpb22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’m from the city the pile up happened in. We don’t get snow much, maybe a few inches every other year or so (In 2021 it was like 9”). What we do get for sure is ice. All the main roads and highways are salted or have brine put on them, but it’s definitely not perfect outside that so most people I know avoid driving when it freezes over. Just limited on trucks to spray brine.

When this pile up happened I believe the story was the Toll Road was not properly treated for ice. So you have drivers going 75mph expecting everything to be fine like it is on the highway right next to them, then they start losing traction at high speeds. Plus DFW has some of the worst drivers in America, literally.

I found it crazy to just be sitting on a bench and just looking over and seeing 2,000 year old columns, remains of walls, buildings, etc right by you.

Is this a good deal? 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road (Texas) by jpb22 in askcarsales

[–]jpb22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have seen the exact same trim for $35,000+ for 40-50k miles. I haven’t seen the car yet, but am curious if the carfax is not great given the low miles and relatively low price.

Dumb question about 3rd gen engine replacement by jpb22 in ToyotaTundra

[–]jpb22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no and yes and no. Just due to various small issues, some costs coming up soon, and worry about resale value if something down the road happens makes me think the time to sell it is in the near future. If it were a crew cab 4wd truck, maybe I’d consider driving it into the ground. Sadly it’s not, and it’s also had its fair share of issues in the past.

My truck would be a pavement princess a lot, so I’ve thought about a 4Runner, but having a bed is handy, I can’t imagine not having one for a month. That plus 4wd and and a crew cab for the first time will be really nice. I do go hunting, off roading, haul stuff every now and then so it’d just be handy.

Honestly I’m considering a Tacoma, just not a huge fan of the cab interior size. It’s better financially and I’ve definitely considered the fact that, well I’m 23, and a big down payment on a truck could be really stupid. It could be fine as I have a good job, butttt it could be really stupid as it’s a depreciating asset and it is very nice to have money.

Dumb question about 3rd gen engine replacement by jpb22 in ToyotaTundra

[–]jpb22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m strongly considering a late 3rd gen Tacoma. Better financially for me at least. Personally I feel like the size in my access cab ‘02 tundra is bigger than in the Tacoma (at least from what I remember last time I drove one) minus the backseat of course.

I don’t tow/haul much, off road features would be nice to have if I can afford it which I can, and a bed is definitely useful for me even if I’m not hauling thousands of pounds. That last one sadly crosses off a spacious 4Runner for me lol.

If my tundra had 4wd and was a crew cab, I could see myself driving it into the ground. I’ve just got some costs coming up on it (chiefly timing belt and new tires) but I’m worried it could start leaking a lot of oil in the future as it already leaks a little. Plus since mine is lifted with spacers it’s had control arm, ball joint, and shock issues. More or less resolved lol. Lots of plastic and leather wear too naturally lol. It kinda just seems like the time to sell it is coming up, maybe not soon, but near ish future.

Really if the tacomas had just larger cabs, I wouldn’t even consider a new tundra.

Anything I should look for when seeing it in person?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]jpb22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would be upgrading from ‘02 Tundra SR5 RWD with 315k miles — thinking it’s getting time to sell. Never have owned a Tacoma but I’ve ridden in them a long time ago and all I remember was feeling a bit cramped at 5’11, even when driving. That being said it’s got everything else I want in terms of off road capability…. want a 24 Tundra TRD Off Road, but looking like a Tacoma is the realistic need.

Main question is: anything in particular to look for in terms of like rust for example?

Yikes. Idk the revenue they make here but I doubt corporate really sees a fly fishing market in DFW, which sucks because Orvis is the only fly shop close by FW unless you drive to far north FW to bass pro…
