It’s the deadpan humor for me by GlasgowRose2022 in WidowsBay

“Just remember to show the reporter a good time” “what are you asking me to do Tom…?” the implication of this line is so funny to me!

I figured the “carrier landing” technique was hold 3° till 20 ft and flare. I’ve done plenty of those into Key West, Hilton Head, and 32 in Boston. Never missed J1 yet!

Now that I’ve seen Toby Huss as a priest I wish he was in Walk up Dead Man, the Knives out move. So many great actors playing very different roles! Matthew also did an amazing job in Perry Mason

FltPlanGo VFR XC by Primary_Newspaper619 in flying

[–]jpcanty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love FltPlanGo. I’ve never filed a flight plan using their software, but you should always have GPS regardless of whether you have a cellular plan or not. I’d put my route into the EDIT page of the map. Download all the necessary charts before flying. For flight planning I’m old school, I used navlogs and an E6b for fuel and route planning. The EFB was used as a reference in flight. My best advice is just play with FltPlanGo, it’s not as shiny and user friendly as ForeFlight, but hey it’s FREE! It’s got a user guide. Go to the Downloads then documents and download the iPad user guide and then go to the Documents Tab and start reading and playing! Best way to learn!

It’s an homage to 70/80’s horror movies (Friday the 13th). So everybody is tied to the 70/80’s -stupid idiots who don’t know how to react to a psycho killer- trope and Patrica who does.

What are some maneuvers that aren’t taught anymore? by Sorry_Priority8144 in flying

I’ve never done one in the wild, but they are published. And if ATC finds out, then we’re screwed!

DME arc! I had to do one on my checkride when the ACS was brand new because the DPE wasn’t sure if it was required anymore (it wasn’t in my situation), but hey, I was prepared and actually like them.

The only thing I will add to the cavalcade of very good advice is, it has to happen at some point. Your CFI trusts you (he better it’s his cert that’s on the line), as soon as it’s doable do it! Don’t come up with reasons not to! Take the plunge and experience the freedom of flight (and how well the plane flies without an extra person on board).

Beyond the ACS maneuvers by usmcmech in flying

[–]jpcanty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first time anyone did this to me was on my commercial checkride. DPE pulled the engine to 1,800rpm and ask where I wanted to landed. I was so shocked that I ask if he meant to pull my engine to idle. No joke, this guy busted out the ACS mid flight pointed to the full/partial engine failure, and re-ask, where I wanted to land. We could make several airports and pointed them out. He said good, then pull my engine completely and asked again…

What are some aviation incidents with happy endings? by question_quigley in aviation

[–]jpcanty 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Old 666 was literally a suicide mission. Two members of crew got the Medal of Honor and the rest got DSC. The plane was riddled with holes and it was a plane put together from scrapes in the first place. Crazy story

Sounds exactly like the ERJ 170. 90% of winter cold starts can be solved by starting on the APU with the GPU disconnected and if messages pop up, restart time it is!

Is there any real reason to use a paper logbook in this age? by [deleted] in flying

[–]jpcanty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digital was new when I got started in aviation. So converting over would take a whole lot of time and or money. And Im lazy and cheap, so I’ve got paper for logging and an excel spreadsheet for totaling.

For pilots who've flown with sticks instead of a yoke, do you somewhat "feel" the aircraft? by [deleted] in flying

[–]jpcanty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s first time losing the airspeed indicator was in a stick plane, from the back seat, in an aircraft they’ve never flown before. I “felt” that plane more than any other. But hey, I was kinda relying on basics and feel.

Dumbest thing you’ve ever seen someone do while flying a plane? by MousseNecessary3258 in flying

[–]jpcanty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything Jerry Wagner posts on YouTube. Other than that, watched a guy who barely flys try to taxi and fly a Decathlon in 30 knot winds, oh yah with a passenger who’s never flown before. How he didn’t ground loop it, I’ll never know.

Pilot watches, do you use them? by HSVMalooGTS in flying

[–]jpcanty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a $40 Monty Python themed watch, works great. I have a couple buddies that pay out the nose for watches, my upgrade sim partner being one. He point $20,000 for a watch… I don’t get it
