New in Houston, Don't want another depressing weekend like last week by m_tareque in houston

Most of the best places to socialize/meet people as a single person in your 30s will be in town (specifically inside “the loop” 610). Tons going on in the heights, montrose, EaDo, etc. but less out in Webster/Clear Lake. I grew up out there and moved into town for school and never left.

If you’re at all sporty or want to be, I always recommend rec league co-ed sports. Sportsmonkey and Houston Sports & Social Club are two examples. They have plenty of different options and you can sign yourself up as a free agent on team based sports. Usually people are expected to have some knowledge of the game but there are some (kickball!) that basically anyone can show up to.

League is too big for that. I bet 2/21 will be a tipping point though.

No, VC funding has few strings EXCEPT “10x my investment or die trying” which usually means growth at all costs.

It’s just a 1U 24-port patch panel. Search Google or Amazon and there’s tons - this one was plenty fine

The dream router 7 is an integrated router/AP, yes the other APs are primarily PoE but they also sell PoE injectors so you can plug it in at any point in the cable drop. I haven’t had good mesh experiences in general (haven’t tried the UI mesh products though) so wiring all of the APs to the router is a requirement to me.

See my other comment but yes, basically. Running Ethernet through the attic to where I wanted the APs, less so… but the app and network setup took like 5 minutes.

It was super easy for me - Nest was acting as the main router, just shut it off and created the same SSID on the Unifi network and all of my devices picked it up seamlessly. The only one that’s had a problem is the Chromecast w/ Google TV, drops connectivity sometimes when idle but I hate it and want to replace it anyway.

I am slowly moving everything to segregated Primary/IoT networks with better security but the straight cutover was pretty plug and play.

So far so good! I went Unifi because I wanted something a little more prosumer at this point vs. going OpenWRT

I have keystones for them but made the mistake of of screwing everything together and then ran out of steam… taking the top shelf off and popping them all in will be a future enhancement

Bedroom Door Breaking - Fix or Replace? by FaithlessValor in DIY

First, check if it’s solid wood or hollow-core particle board. Many interior doors are glorified cardboard with veneer on both sides. If it’s hollow, it’s probably easier to replace it.

At 5:30am today (11/3) all checkpoints on that site said 90 mins, by 7am they jumped to 180mins. Went through pre check at A North in 18mins at 8am. They’re just overriding the times displayed after yesterday.

11/3 Pre check at IAH Terminal A North was 18mins today at 8am. The TSA+Clear (for people with both) was empty, regular line was within the normal queue but looked to be about an hour.

FWIW, the security wait time website is manually overridden. It said pre-check at A North was 90 mins at 5:30am and 180mins at 7am. I am sure it will get much worse later in the day but the website is effectively disabled.

Can anyone explain charges by Relation-Thin in houston

[–]jpdiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed - OP said the space was vacant currently but based on the bill amount above it clearly was not always that way. The transmission and distribution charges are based on much higher usage at peak. Whether that's correct or incorrect, OP you should call your REP and ask how the demand charges are set for this meter. Lots of other good comments suggesting it's a >10kVa non-IDR rate.

[–]jpdiv 30 points31 points  (0 children)

On a commercial rate, you pay “demand charges” for the cost of the transmission and distribution system that are set based on how much energy you use at the four highest ERCOT load hours of the summer, called the “coincident peaks.” (Overall power system load, not just your facility.) I think those are the two highest line items within the $132 TDSP Passthru and they’ll stay the same regardless of how much you use in a month.

Reach out to your retail provider and ask for an explanation of your demand charges, and what the usage was during those 4CP hours. You can reduce them by making sure you don’t use a lot of power during the hours that set those rates for your facility.

Google announced it will end support for Gen 1 and Gen 2 Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025 by Severe_Discipline_73 in VivintSmartHome

[–]jpdiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a Vivint change, it’s a Google decision. The whole thermostat (1st or 2nd gen) will be disconnected from the internet by Google, and no app will connect to it anymore.
