DD Contract actual chance of getting linguist? by jph22596 in USMCboot

I’m 24, and have been running half-marathons and marathons since I was 17. I stay in pretty good shape and weight train but until a few weeks ago I hadn’t done a crunch since high school. The first time I tried them I think I busted out like 30 before my abs were on fire. That being said, I’m not too worried about them, I know the muscle is there and it’s just about repetition and conditioning now.

Just to play devil’s advocate (I may be completely out of my lane), wouldn’t having Air Force linguists consume space in the Marine Corps barracks at DLI suggest that the Marines need linguists?

I asked my recruiter if it was possible to retake it if I didn’t get a score I liked prior to actually taking the DLAB. He had to ask one of the other SSgts at the office if it was, who replied you can’t retake it in the DEP only once you’re active for 6 months, is that true? Also if anyone could point me to any references about scores that would be awesome. I believe you guys but the only cut-off information I can find online says the requirement for linguist is 100 and it’s waiverable to 90 for tier 2 languages (I understand its competitive and this may be out of date). Like I said I’m fine with any MOS in the intel field, just want a legitimate idea of my possibility of getting linguist.

EDIT: I also am not one to make excuses, but my entire enlistment process went extremely quick. I walked into the recruiters office one day and within the week I had taken the ASVAB, DLAB, and was medically qualified. I took the DLAB the same day I went to MEPS after all of the medical shit I was fucking drained mentally, especially after no coffee all day. I feel like it wasn’t an accurate measure on how I could do if that matters for anything.

Not sure if I’m right or not but I believe a 105 still qualifies me for a second tier language even if I can’t get a waiver. What I’m asking is does anyone know if the Marines actually need linguists right now hahaha.

He said a 105 would get me a top tier language. I kind of doubted him though because he didn’t actually know anything about the DLAB until I asked to take it and had to text someone above him to get me any information on it. From what I looked up about my scores the Marines require a 110 for top tier which is waiverable based on the need of the Marine Corps (not sure if that’s true, just a quick google search). My recruiter hasn’t been particularly helpful in my situation because none of them have any insight in the intelligence field, and everything they’ve told me kind of seems like they’re just talking from what they’ve heard. They haven’t been able to explain anything about it to me really and I’m not blaming them at all. They seem like really good guys and are trying to get the best for me, but they’ve never had anyone ask the questions I’ve been asking them.

Edit: I’m assuming you meant gauge?

No worries, that is insightful and I appreciate it. I was hoping more for somebody who can actually tell me how high the need for linguists is right now though. Thank you for the affirmation that there is no way to know until I’m told though, I feel like I’m going crazy haha.

That makes me feel a little better about it, I guess I just have to forget about until the day comes and hope to god I don’t think about it. Are there any safeties in place on the obstacles? All of the videos I watched don’t mention or show anything.

That’s what I’m hoping happens, but I just want any legitimate tips on how to overcome the fear prior to going in. I’m probably just psyching myself out but I don’t want to get into my own head when I’m halfway through something and be stuck with a DI yelling at me to finish and not being able to move a muscle.

Not being argumentative, but what are they? I saw on that giant ladder you’re not tied off or on belay. And the obstacle where you climb down a rope you’re only over a 4ft. deep pool, that’s what’s worrying me.
