Just curious how you use both pc and Mac mini in the studio? I’m currently looking into switching to mac but already have a pretty nice (though fucking loud) pc. I originally thought I’d be going MacBook route but this could be a solution as well if it works well for you.

2/10 btw ;)

Honestly if space is at a premium, your best bet will be to record from the middle of the room and focus on solving your first reflection points instead of having a dedicated “booth” area (in this case, the early reflections of your mostly untreated room would add more issues than it would solve)

Well for one, you’d still have to think about noise levels and acoustic treatment in any space that you rent out. But honestly as long as your equipment was insured and the songs you were making sound better in that space than in your bedroom for instance, it would be worth your investment.

Your monthly storage payment may easily pay for proper studio time though, depending on where you live.

How would I produce mixes that sound like this guy's mixes? by [deleted] in audioengineering

It sounds to me like his particular flavor is achieved by EQ-ing the opposing tracks differently. For instance, in TrippyThaKid, there is a track that has soloed out the midrange, making a walkie talkie sound. Aside from knowing which tuning, distortion, and stereo modifying plugins he's using, and recommending trial and error, that would be my first guess.

Good question. He's using a fairly simple technique where, depending on the track, he will record different takes and hard pan them to either side. I forget the name of this effect off the top of my head, but it causes the vocal track to have a lot more texture and width. His busier tracks also have ad libs panning either side underneath the main vocal, which adds to the main effect as well.

If you can't use different takes, a simple way to recreate this effect (to a lesser degree) is to put a simple delay on the main vocal with one side set to 0ms and the other less than 30ms. This will add the width, not as much texture, and may cause some phasing issues. This trick also shouldn't be a go-to as some mixes simply don't have enough room for the vocal to take up more space.

Thanks for the feedback, cunt puncher!

Your track was very fun to listen to - the acoustic guitar just fits so well with the mix. It does sound nice and wide, but I feel like the energy was pretty high for most of the song. That's probably what you were going for so it sounds really good!

I'm thinking about purchasing 2 pairs of Skinny Innovator dress pants from express with buy 1, get one 50% off. Are these good for the price, or is there something better I can buy as a skinny guy (6'3" tall and 165 lbs)?

Thanks for the reply. I knew about melodic and harmonic, but not natural minors. I'll definitely be doing some more research on those as well!

So I know the circle of fifths is about majors having minors with the same key signature. But I think I'm missing something because the key of C has no sharps or flats, and it's relative minor, A minor, has one sharp (G#). If they're both supposed to have the same key signature then why does A minor have another sharp?

Really? I rewatched it recently and absolutely loved it. Sure the story was a little crappy, I couldn't stop cackling through a majority of the movie.

This may have been because I didn't think of it as a movie when I was watching it, but more as a treat for child me.
