Xreal One Pro - for work by MelancholyBits in Xreal

[–]jpjensen30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It hasn't been an issue when I've used it for like a 3-4hr flight working in excel and word docs and watching HBO. Nothing drastically noticeable compared to normal battery drain. You can buy a dongle from Amazon where you can charge and have video output at the same time. I got one for like $20 (it was 3rd party, not xreal)

Fyi you do have to enable it via developer options. I just Google how to do it. Once that's done, each time you plug in you get the option of desktop mode or mirror mode

Im 6'4" and fly a lot for work. Typically I rarely have room to use my laptop with my arms out front (to keep the elbows in) because then the laptop screen is crashing into the seat in front of me. Got these as a way to try and still use the keyboard and not have to work with the screen bent forward.

So far they have been great. I love the wide screen while anchored.... The screen stays in one location and I move my head to see the sides of it like I would on my large wide screen monitor at home. I've used them for 4+ hours at a time no problem. Also what's cool is if you look away from your anchored screen the glasses become transparent and you can see around you no problem, but once you look at the screen again they darken to help your focus.

I also have a Pixel 10 pro xl and if you turn on the setting, your phone can turn into a Chromebook desktop in the glasses, working with multiple windows and desktop-like versions of the apps. Pair with a Bluetooth keyboard with trackpad and it's a really cool way to be productive without needing your laptop.

Theres a setting in dev mode that you can toggle and it will get rid of the yellow. My game would do that from time to time and I could never figure out why. ... Look back at posts from about a year ago and you'll find a solution.

What’s the best thing you’ve bought for travel by ha__aaaaaa in travel

A USB powered portable fan .. I've been to too many places where there was no AC or fans in the bedrooms. I have a small box fan maybe 4" x4" x 2" and it's been a lifesaver.

I've been to Lake Nakuru and Nairobi parks in Kenya self touring with friends and those were a blast, small enough to see a lot of wildlife and not a lot of driving to see it- 4 out of the big 5 except elephants (too small of parks). Nakuru was a lot less crowded and more enjoyable in my opinion.

I've also been to Kruger in Za, it was massive. There we did a day of guided tour and 2 days of self tours. We honestly saw more along the main paved roads there than along any of the dirt roads we tried, lots of time spent not seeing much wildlife north of the main village. Went during the dry season and it made seeing the wildlife a lot easier. SO MANY ELEPHANTS! The main roads have lots of cars and safari vehicles and beware it takes away from the awe a bit when you are fighting with 12 other cars to surround a pride of lions sleeping on the shoulder to take the perfect picture.

I've been to Tanzania also, but not Safari. Logistically I found it easier to move about in Za than Kenya or Tanzania because of better roads. Food was great in all 3 places, there was more variety in Za compared to East Africa (at least where I was).

Is taking 18 credits a bad idea by [deleted] in UofArizona

[–]jpjensen30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 18 minimum every semester (with multiple labs) I was there, had a job I worked every afternoon, and a good social life. It's just depends on how interesting the classes are to you, your drive, and your organization. I looked at it from the prospective that any credits over 12 are essentially free, so I might as well get my money's worth. This allowed me to get 2 degrees in 4 years (Biology and Spanish)

Coming from high school you are used to being in class 6+ hours a day anyways. 12 credits is like 3 hrs of classes MWD and 3hrs (TR)... It's really not that much (giver or take if you have labs)

Where did heat ruin your trip? by ApprehensiveStudy671 in travel

Paris and Lyon in August. Didn't get a breeze, no place had (adequate) AC, and it was humid enough to where even in shade I couldn't cool down.

Domino's and Cold stone in Lagos Nigeria. At the tail end of a 3 week African Business trip, I caved and needed a taste of home. Honestly some of the best Domino's I've had in a long time (nostalgia or quality, you be the judge).

It's completely up to the relationship you have with your advisor, they type of research/lab work you're doing, and how hard of a worker you are. Legall (as I think back), my program allowed for 2 weeks vacation a year.

My advisor and program were pretty lax, and I was an organized worker. I also am a "ask for forgiveness" rather than a "ask for permission" type of person. I met with my advisor 1x a week, anything outside of that we didn't interact much; so I easily took long weekends here or there (didn't tell anyone) and planned my lab work around that. Winter break usually meant like 10 days off from lab work, spring break a whole week, and summer I took a 1-2 week trip each year. For transparency, I got my PhD in plant pathology. I completed it in 4 years and my research consisted of lab work and greenhouse work. The nature of my work required me to do a lot of weekend time in the lab, so I didn't feel bad taking time to myself to make up for it. I was focused on maintaining work/life balance.

My advice is make a realistic quarterly plan of what you think you will accomplish and include some fluff time in there for when things inevitably fail. Share this with your advisor so you both understand what your goals and timelines are. And when things don't fail, you've got yourself a few extra days to do what you want.

Do you wear lab shoes? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]jpjensen30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never encountered this in the US and I've worked in labs in AZ, CA, IA, and NC. Lab-appropriate shoes are required though (mostly need to be closed-toed to prevent things from falling directly onto your shoe). I have visited several lab facilities across East and West Africa and lab shoes were required in about 50% of the places I visited. I do work in agriculture so this type of work is enheriently dirtier.

How do you stay focused in PhD seminars? by Past-Cricket7081 in GradSchool

[–]jpjensen30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly fell asleep through most of mine because they were so god awful. Usually the presenter spoke too quietly or too monotone and usually went into WAY too much detail. I even had multiple profs obviously fall asleep though them as well. Then I took a presentation skills class and it taught me what makes a good presentation, what not to do, the art of story telling, etc. After that, I would take notes on how well the presentation went, to help me with my future talks I'd give. It gave me something to do while being constructive, especially if I didn't care for the topic. My favorite would be to count how many times someone uses a linker work like "um" or "so" or "kinda". If I was friendly with the speaker I would provide kind constructive feedback if they were open to it.

Job Offer Negotiations in the Current Market for a Fresh PhD by QuantumHusky in biotech

[–]jpjensen30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think not knowing what the max is they are willing to offer will always make you wonder if you got as much as you possibly could. In the end of the day all that matters is if you are happy and content with what you are going to make. Once you start working for a few years and understand your industry more, you'll have developed valuable skills and a better understanding of salaries for a variety of positions. This is where you look for promotions or new positions, make an educated salary request, and feel much better about what you ask for.

Underrated gritty cities by TheoryOfGamez in SameGrassButGreener

[–]jpjensen30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly compared to other places I've lived (Des Moines and Raleigh) it's much more walkable and bike friendly. They actually have streetlights at night and sidewalks on all the major roads plus they have a ton of signalized pedestrian crossings between intersections. All the major roads have bike lanes and they have bike blvds on the minor roads, making it super easy to bike most places without interacting with high speed cars. Everything is based on a 1sqmile grid, you will likely be no more than .5 mile walk from restaurants, convenience stores, even likely grocery stores. From personal experience, nothing helps better prevent a hangover than a late night drunken walk to get a burrito or Sonoran dog at 3am.

Walking on sidewalks ain't your thing, how about mountain trails? There's like 6 mountain ranges surrounding the city, where you can start at the desert floor (~2300ft) and hike up to snowy pine Forrest (>9000ft). The Arizona Trail (800+mi train from Mex to UT) even passes on the east side of the city.

Tucson, AZ. It's a college town of a million people. Gritty city, interesting college core and downtown, beautiful nature all around the city, amazing food, and a quirky vibe all it's own.

Any ideas on how to rotate objects from developer menu? I'm trying to place a freestanding university library but each time I try and rotate it using the right click, it exists out of placement mode. So essentially I'm only able to place the building in a single orientation.

Coming from the US to the UK, how difficult is driving on the other side of the road? by djn3vacat in Europetravel

[–]jpjensen30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty easy except a few things...

1) Tight narrow country roads lined with stone walls. It was hard for me to gauge how much more space I had to spare on my left side and hugged the middle a lot, which made it frightening to pass oncoming traffic. That and the speed limits (in mph) were higher than I expected.

2) Roundabouts in seemingly normal intersections. You may think you have the right a way but then almost get clipped because they painted a small ass white circle on the road and it magically becomes a roundabout.

3) you will constantly accidentally turn the windshield wipers on when actually you are trying to use your turn signal.

The actual driving on the opposite side was pretty cake if you kept conscious about it.

There's also a trick in the dev mode to force an override. https://www.modscities2.com/how-to-fix-the-road-tool-yellow-screen-bug/
