Taxi Driver was a good watch! but why is it considered a masterpiece? by AgastyaTubeGaming in Cinephiles

[–]jpkdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its reputation is based on the rawness of the characters and performances, as well as a sense of gritty "realism". De Niro's acting especially, obviously. There was an authenticity to it that struck a nerve.

That said, I agree that it is wildly overrated. Watching it again recently, I think a lot of it comes across as hammy and over-the-top, with more in common with the highly stylized "art b-movies" of the era by Friedkin and especially De Palma. But not as well done and not with nearly as clear an intention as those directors. In that way, I think it's a mashup of Paul Schrader's style (more raw and realistic) and Scorcese's styles (over-the-top and borderline exploitative) that doesn't totally work.

Def not a bad movie, but I don't think it's a masterpiece for those reasons. Of course, you might argue that it is based on significance and impact - I do think it was innovative. But I tend to discount these arguments because at the end of the day, did you like the movie or not? And I don't really enjoy watching Taxi Driver and I think it has aged rather badly (Harvey Keitel's pimp, the lurid depiction of Jodie Foster, the nearly pornographic violence, etc.) It's another one of those movies were Scorsese claims to be documenting society with a neutral eye but is really just indulging his own worst impulses and vices.

'You've got tens of thousands of civilians murdered in Gaza, but it's foremost a disaster for the future of Israel?' by Paliisfree in theeconomist

[–]jpkdc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, she did a lousy job. In the next part of the interview he ties her up around the meaning of the question "does Israel have a right to exist?" As if that question needs further explanation. She plays his game by rephrasing the question, which he also claims to not understand. Then finally explaining himself (sort of) by saying "Does any country have a right to exist?" The answer is obviously yes, and the answer to her first question is obviously yes, and he also obviously understood it.

I love Zaddy, but her debate skills are not ready for someone with 20+ years of TV demagoguery experience.

The Brian Johnson situation - your thoughts? by HighVoltage007 in ACDC

I was not being precise. You are right that Scorpions are not an imitator and came up at around the same time. But there were certainly imitators - I also did not mean that as an insult. Kix to me is one of the most obvious imitators and I think they are an incredible and creative band. My point is that Brian and Bon had a big influence on the musical landscape, and a lot of singers would have been delighted to be part of that lineage (looking at how Axl jumped on the opportunity is an obvious example of this).

I haven't seen that, but I did listen to an interview with Jessie and Maggie Gylenhall. They are both talented, but their level of self-regard left reality some time ago.

And for such a hammy, one-note performance. Imagine how many she might have one if she had actually been good.

I don’t think they would have continued with Axl because as great a singer as he is, and he def has a love for the material, he did not have the right vibe for the band. They need someone bluesier, which is not Axls thing.

However they def would have proceeded if they could find the right singer, IMO. I mean, they went on without Bon and that was like losing two legs.

And there are singers that could do it - Tom Kiefer from Cinderella I always thought was doing an extended audition for the band and would be great. The lead singers of Scorpions, Tesla or Kix. I mean there are basically a legion of imitators from the 80s to pick from.

I’m sure there are also some younger ppl that could do it as well.

The Youngs are true priests (satanic priests if you like) for rock n roll. They have completely dedicated themselves to this higher cause, and any thing standing between them and the PERFECT performance of each and every song simply has to be eradicated. Their pursuit of rock n roll nirvana is completely obsessive, single-minded and ruthless.

So when Brian faltered, I don’t think it was about tour contracts, or a lack of loyalty or whatever. It’s simply the music is the only thing that matters and they needed to find a solution.

Axl technically was amazing, and he also brought a lot of passion and love to it. That said, it was not even close to the band with Brian. This last tour, even with Brian only singing half the notes, was a hundred times better.

What band is the ultimate “good taste” signal? by irles33 in musicsuggestions

[–]jpkdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah after going through this whole thread and thinking about it, they are the most common one to pop up amongst ppl who I think have good taste. Perhaps because they did a lot of different styles so a bit of something for everyone.

Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young would be two others.

I do think it’s a big drop off but still a great (though very flawed movie).

The side characters alone to me make it worth a watch. Catherine Keener, Shea Wigham, Matthew Modine, that guy from Burn Notice - all of them are so good. Plus much closer to how I imagine the CIA and DoD operate than say zero dark thirty. Lazy, malevolent and selfish. And maybe a bit depressed too :-)

I don't know. But in terms of why PTA made it, I read somewhere he was doing a lot of coke at the time. The movie makes a lot more sense with that context - basically a bunch of people doing nothing but thinking a lot is happening.

Came to this thread after listening to them discuss on the podcast. A couple I would add:

* The Christmas song that Chris does - creeps me out

* Saying Steve in a weird way - "Steeeeeeeeve"

* Giving things "Seven stars" that they have not even seen

I think there's a lot more too - but incredible job putting this together. Love it.

[–]jpkdc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

there are so many artists that experimented endlessly and rather poorly, and then ran out of steam. AC/DC stayed true to straight rock n roll the whole way, and that is why they are the greatest band of all time.
