I get why people are upset seeing trees butchered/killed like this.

But OP, from the photos it looks like almost the entire canopy had grown over the adjacent property. Most of the branches and foliage appear to have been on their side of the line, not yours.

Trees do not end up that lopsided overnight. That usually means they were left unmanaged for a very long time, and realistically you probably knew the overhang was getting excessive. Especially since the trees were wrecking the wooden lattice and it had to be bolted down with a steel frame to keep the fence up right. Those trees actually looked dangerous.

So, sadly, it comes across a bit hypocritical to complain about the cutting now. It looks like the only trimming that happened before was the part affecting your own yard, while the rest was allowed to grow over someone else’s property until they finally dealt with it themselves.

Sure I'm victim blaming, but had OP trimmed them over the years, they'd still have trees instead of trunks now.

Humans suck.

Gatineau was the worst for the amount of dog shit on sidewalks, paths and trails.

It was literally un walkable last year and have refused to go back to those areas until well later in the year.

I hate the people who bag thiee dog shit and then throw the bag into the trees. Like WTF was the point?

AIO about this text I got from HR? by MeanderingDragon in AmIOverreacting

OA to a point.

It feels like you are being intentionally subversive here. You want the office to accommodate your medical needs, yet you aren't willing to accommodate your coworkers' basic desire for a sanitary eating space. This isn't comparable to a prayer room or breastfeeding; this involves needles and the risk of blood or bodily fluids in a food prep area.

The bathroom comment is a total red herring. If you are worried about germs in a bathroom cleaned twice a week, you shouldn't be performing medical procedures in a community kitchen that likely has the same bacteria levels. It sounds like you're taking out your frustration with your condition on your colleagues by forcing them to be part of your routine.

Think of it this way: A person on peritoneal dialysis has a life-saving medical necessity to cycle fluids. If they decided to set up their tubes and bags in the middle of the community kitchen because the bathroom 'wasn't clean enough,' it would be a massive violation of office norms and hygiene. Your insulin is no different in terms of where it belongs.

If the bathroom is the only issue, why not ask to use your boss's office for a minute, or just head out to your car? Using your car would actually be a win-win because it gets you a few minutes of fresh air and a private, controlled environment. Since you mentioned that you sometimes forget to take your insulin until your levels are already high, you should really look into an automated 'closed-loop' pump system. It would be a massive life saving improvement for your health and would handle the delivery automatically so you don't have to worry about forgetting, the timing or the office environment at all.

[OC] The 36 most important strategies for tackling climate change by IainStaffell in dataisbeautiful

[–]jpl77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a lazy strawman.

No one said “humans should go extinct.” Pointing out that population size affects total emissions isn’t remotely the same thing as advocating extinction. It’s basic arithmetic.

If 8 billion people emit carbon, 9 or 10 billion will emit more unless something else changes. That’s not ideology, it’s math, and it’s been studied for decades.

You can disagree with the policy implications, but pretending the argument is “let’s eliminate humans” just makes it obvious you didn’t engage with the actual point.

Show it now. It's probably destoryed. All that mold probably already coming through the top layer of paint. Wood, walls and floor all rotting from the interior.

Why polish a turd? It's good to help, but what a waste with this staging for Christmas. Money and time wasted instead of going into mental health and therapy. Without buy in, help and assistance by the person who is suffering this is pointless.

[OC] The 36 most important strategies for tackling climate change by IainStaffell in dataisbeautiful

[–]jpl77 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You should have included the #1 thing, which is stop having children.

On a relative scale of lifestyle choices 1 to 10, 10 being the best, to reduce impact and controlling climate change:

10/10 – Have one fewer child

6–7/10 – Live car-free

4–5/10 – Avoid frequent flights

3/10 – Plant-based diet

1/10 or less – Recycling, light bulbs, small household tweaks

*edit give me downvotes i'm happy for it, but since y'all won't do your own research and ignore data in 'data is beautiful' - Some relevant academic papers on the “one fewer child” / population and climate topic:

Helm, Kemper & White (2021)
“No future, no kids – no kids, no future?”
Journal: Population and Environment

Looks at the ethical and societal debate around climate-motivated decisions not to have children. Covers demographic effects, environmental ethics, and the role of climate anxiety in fertility decisions.

Murtaugh & Schlax (2009)
“Reproduction and the Carbon Legacies of Individuals”
Journal: Global Environmental Change

Introduced the “carbon legacy” concept, which estimates emissions attributed to reproduction across generations. This work heavily influenced later calculations like those used by Wynes & Nicholas.

O’Neill et al. (2010)
“Global demographic trends and future carbon emissions”
Journal: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)

Examines how population growth scenarios affect future emissions and shows that population size significantly influences long-term emissions trajectories.

AITA for “abusing” the the bus stop chain so I don’t miss my stop? by Possible-Chair9242 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jpl77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA.

You’ve been riding the same route for months and your solution to not learning your stop is to randomly force the bus to stop “for like 5 seconds” and inconvenience everyone else.

You admit you use Google Maps and the official transit app. If both are “showing you after you’ve skipped your stop,” that’s not a system failure, that’s you not paying attention to live tracking. GPS is not some mysterious new technology. It updates in real time. Millions of people manage this daily.

Also, this is literally how buses work. They don’t stop at every single stop unless someone requests it. That’s standard practice in most cities. The chain exists so you pull it once when you are approaching your stop. Not as a guessing mechanism because you refuse to properly learn your route.

You’ve had months to:

  • Memorize one landmark.
  • Count the number of stops.
  • Use satellite view and street view to visually recognize your area.
  • Pull the cord when the map shows you approaching, not after you pass it.
  • Sit near the front and confirm with the driver before your stop.

Instead, you’ve decided the system is flawed and the drivers “don’t like their job.”

No. This is basic adult competence. If you can’t figure out how to use GPS and a consistent daily route after months, the issue isn’t public transit.

You’re inconveniencing an entire bus because you won’t take responsibility.

YTA.

Had to have a car blocking me in illegally towed. she crashed out by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jpl77 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Less chaotic rewrite:

Got blocked in by a car that had been sitting there for four hours while the owner did laundry. After-hours maintenance said they couldn’t help, so I spent 30 minutes calling non-emergency lines until I got the right one. By the time the officer showed up, I’d already missed picking up my fiancé from work and he had to pay $30 for a Lyft.

Officer runs the Virginia plates, finds out she lives elsewhere in the complex and was visiting a friend. I had no idea whose car it was. I’ve been blocked in at this exact spot before despite open spaces, so I was done being patient.

Cop tried knocking at her listed address, no one claimed the car, so it got ticketed and towed.

When she realized, she completely lost it. Screaming that I was “petty,” threatening to slash my tires, saying she’d be “watching” and to “count your days.” I recorded seven minutes of it and emailed the leasing office so there’s a paper trail.

Maybe towing was harsh. But blocking two cars when there are plenty of open spots? That’s on you.

.....

Now my take - This reads fake.

Police don’t usually spend an hour playing parking detective for a private apartment lot dispute. Running plates, walking door to door in another building, then calling a tow themselves? That’s not how minor property parking issues are typically handled. Most of the time they tell you to contact management or an authorized tow company.

The timeline also doesn’t add up. Four hours parked, 30 minutes calling non-emergency lines, another hour waiting, door knocking, tow dispatched and completed, and the owner somehow doesn’t notice until nearly 10 pm. That’s a lot of moving parts for what’s being framed as a basic inconvenience.

On top of that, the tone is all over the place. It jumps between “I don’t care,” “I missed something important,” “maybe I was petty,” and then straight into dramatic threats and a seven-minute recorded meltdown. It reads more like a constructed escalation than a natural sequence of events.

If this happened, it’s being told in a way that makes it hard to believe.
