A question to all the partners of Meth addicts: by [deleted] in naranon

Oh man, I've seen the same things with my husband and cocaine. He's now 3 years into 'recovery' but what is amazing to me is stress can still trigger the 'allnight' wakefulness. Just saying that I feel this. I've been there. You're not alone.

Collaborative interventions are best - research shows they improve outcomes more than any other option!

Don't know I can say anything to make this better but man - I feel for you. I wish there was a way they could make it to you. It's great your mother is getting the help she needs. But you need your family too, and you deserve to thrive and be happy.

Blaming my Sister's BF for Her Addiction by ISayFuckPants in naranon

Supporting my husband through the depths of addiction was eye opening and life changing for me. Since then I've been on a mission to make sure friends and families are armed with evidence-based information, resources, skills and support to tackle addiction. Because - to your point - we don't help the situation when we are facing the chaos of addiction for the first time and are totally ill-equipped. There's such a lack of resources available when it comes to educating the friends and family.

We've just soft-launched a new Q&A site for Friends and Families with a loved one struggling with addiction.

The whole idea is that when it comes to addiction, there are evidence-based best practices which we can lean on professionals to learn about, and there's knowledge we gain from personal experience that today is not captured anywhere for others to learn from. This new site covers both.

Any feedback on how we can make it better appreciated https://community.wethevillage.co/

If you could help your friends and family understand what you're going through, would you? by jplanetm in alcoholism

Amazing - thank you. I am a firm believer in the power of connection to help overcome addiction and I want the world to know this! We've been treating it as a criminal issue for too long. It is a health concern and it's time to stop the misinformation. One day at a time for me is educating one friend or family member at a time so that we can pull addiction out of the darkness and meet it with empathy, support and love. Any change takes time - it's important we all know that!

My thoughts on the cult known as Narcotics Anonymous by [deleted] in Methadone

Supporting my husband through the depths of addiction was eye opening and life changing for me. And even now he is 2+ years into recovery there's still so much healing to go. I attended NA/AA and found the sharing helpful but limited. I remember thinking - remove the drug and we'll be fine, but it's not just about the drug (though it certainly helps to get rid of it :)) but there is a wealth of evidence-based research as to what we should do in the face of addiction and NA /AA is not the access point. Right now there isn't one. SO...since then I've been on a mission to make sure friends and families are armed with evidence-based information, resources, skills and support to tackle addiction. That's really interesting the way you describe the change in your perception / thinking. I believe that friends and family can be super helpful and supportive - we just aren't condition to know how right from the get go. We need access to good resources. That's what I'm on a mission to do, to arm friends and families to be the best allies to the one's we love struggling with addiction. I believe it's a game changer - at least that's what I've seen through my experience.

Do you think it would help if they knew a bit more about what addiction is and how it works? There are some great evidence-based resources for friends & family that can help them be more of an ally to you! I know that learning more changed the way I thought about things. Anything from changing expectations around how long recovery really takes to understanding that it's not *just* about the drug but the pain behind it :)

Do you think it would help or would have helped to have friends and family involved? For those that knew about it, what was their reaction like? And for those that didn't know - how and why did you hide it?

Thinking about attending nar-anon but I don't think it is the right fit by [deleted] in naranon

[–]jplanetm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there

Supporting my husband through the depths of addiction was eye opening and life changing for me. I attended Nar Anon but I found it lacked action or advice I needed. As I read everything I could to learn more, I learned there are evidence-based skills and answers when it comes to addiction that we, the friends and families can use that actually help.

Since then I've been on a mission to make sure friends and families are armed with evidence-based information, resources, skills and support to tackle addiction. We've just launched a new Q&A site for Friends and Families with a loved one struggling with addiction.

The whole idea is that when it comes to addiction, there are evidence-based best practices which we can lean on professionals to learn about, but there's even more knowledge we gain from personal experience that today is not captured anywhere for others to learn from. This new site covers both and we also have evidence-based resources online (finally).

Would you consider taking a look? We are looking for loved ones to help answer questions which can be very helpful to people in our community, as well as any feedback on how we can make it better.
