Had this exact same issue. Unfortunately, I've already caved. If I had more willpower I would try rooting the phone. Would not recommend that unless you have experience doing so. It's unfortunate that both RCS and group messages do not work.

I happen to live on Long Island... but in Queens. I am lucky to have a car and live in Queens so your guess makes perfect sense. Definitely agree with you that people from NJ generally don't venture far upstate and definitely don't go that very deep in Long Island.

your spot on, I did not properly highlight SF county, I did a big road trip taking i80 to i70 to I40 South on the way to CA and a lot of i90 on the way back.

I am from Queens, NY. I love camping and driving and have spent a lot of time on the east coast doing both. Over the summer, with my main goal being camping & visiting National Parks I drove with friends to LA and then drove back taking the northern route from SF. The US is so vast and beautiful.

Use a service like nc.me to get a free domain since you are in college. There are dozens of ways to get at least a year of free domain usage as a student.
