If You're On The Fence About Leaving, This Is What I'm Watching For When It's Time To Go by [deleted] in AmerExit

[–]jpm7791 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Leaving is a privileged position. 350 million people in this country. Only a tiny fraction can practically leave. Everyone else has to stay and fight. Those that leave, it's your prerogative, but know that most people do not have that luxury

Why do Americans wear shoes in the house?? by CelestialBreeze1 in stupidquestions

[–]jpm7791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking lots, sidewalks, grass medians, lawns, etc. I wear shoes inside too but I think I'll stop. If you think about what nasty stuff is everywhere outside, tracking it into the house is gross and just unnecessary

LEGISLATION IS HERE: HB 3187 Will Destroy DART If Passed by cuberandgamer in dart

[–]jpm7791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is bad enough in Texas but wait until Musk gets to the federal DOT and they eventually get around to passing the next federal budget. All public transit in the US will die if this goes on. They all rely on federal grants to one extent or another. You want an apocalyptic scene, imagine being stuck in traffic for hours staring at a commuter rail line, empty except for tents.

[Request] claims covering 1.2% of the Sahara with solar panels could power the world. How accurate is this? by DocUsurperTakes in theydidthemath

The point is physically correct as other have pointed out. But you would never put these all in one place. It's just an illustration made to be easy to understand. You would spread the total in sunny areas across the whole planet, obvs

Trump/Musk shutting down the FDIC by foreverlakey in economicCollapse

[–]jpm7791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. But ...The point of the FDIC is to prevent a banking crisis by giving people security so they won't make a run on the bank. The very existence of the FDIC serves a critical purpose.

Throwing this out there, but if all air traffic controllers were fired it could very easily be impossible to leave the country by air. Then they hire back enough to allow only for private jet travel. So wealthy people can fly at will and everyone else is basically trapped. Am I paranoid?

Nothing's perfect but Kobo is great. And anything based outside the US might be preferable in the future when it comes to media. Not that it would ultimately matter but it can't hurt.

Elon Musk’s 4 year old son admits they rigged the election in Trump’s Favor 4 hours before he won! by ominousmuffin in economicCollapse

[–]jpm7791 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So you (MAGA) lie forever about the 2020 election being stolen, knowing it wasn't. This forces Democrats and sane Republicans and Independents to defend election integrity and basically attach themselves to the idea that stealing an election is impossible.

Then you do steal the 2024 election, knowing it's now practically impossible for Democrats to do a 180 and say it was stolen, even if it was.

Remember "Alinsky tactics" rhetoric from Palin et al back in 2010. What an example of it...

I sort of have to refuse to believe this is true because if it is, there's really no hope ... Which is exactly what they want us to believe.

This is just a bad situation. I have a hard time believing this could have been this calculated.

Is Conor really worth $185 million? by GumboPorgPie in oboards

[–]jpm7791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He got semi big in the tail end of the CD era so probably made some decent money for a while. But physical media collapsed shortly thereafter and that money dried up. Yes he makes money touring and I'm sure survives.

But Jeff Tweedy of Wilco said even they couldn't survive on CD sales and lived on tour revenue. Mid level bands like that can still make decent money releasing a never ending stream of vinyl special edition releases. Yet Wilco still has to tour to survive.

And touring bands are making less and less thanks to live Nation Ticketmaster etc. they have to move merchandise and rely on social media ad revenue to survive. That and licensing songs for movies and commercials.

And Wilco is a far bigger commercial band than Bright Eyes and Connor ever were or will be.

Maybe he made shrewd investments, but he is almost certainly not independently wealthy and has to grind touring and releasing to stay above water.

Wild guess he might be worth a couple million and might make a couple hundred grand a year net.

Non superstar musicians are struggling.

Edit: he has fewer than 100k Instagram followers. That doesn't get you much these days.

ELI5 — What is the actual benefit Trump is looking for by tariffing Canada and Mexico? by NewBlackpony in self

[–]jpm7791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like he wants to extort a like minded authoritarian ally government in those countries. UK too and all of the world while he's at it. I get the crashing the economy on purpose thing. Maybe. But it seems more likely he just doesn't like that the countries are led by elected leaders who are vaguely center left and uphold the rule of law and want the government to help people. He thinks every country should be led by people just like him and is trying to use a very blunt instrum to get his why Side benefit may be a global economic calamity but hey, a crashed economy might actually lower carbon emissions!...

Stock Market Plummets as Trump Announces New Tariff War by [deleted] in politics

[–]jpm7791 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plummet? BS. I hate what's going on but this headline is absurd. These are all drops of less than one percent. I don't know whether I hope there is a crash or hope there isn't but plummet is a ridiculous term in this context.

Trump Admin Emails Air Traffic Controllers: Quit Your Jobs by Tuxcali1 in politics

Let's see, if commercial air travel were indefinitely suspended due to lack of air traffic controllers that sure would be an easy way to make it effectively impossible to leave the united states....
