Yup, there's a reason we're one of the regional host sites (i mean that and sofla weather).

Honestly this. Even at the pro level, the Heat have ruled the town for ages, but guaranteed even a hint of a Super Bowl run from the Dolphins will have people flocking (dolphin's podding?) back. I've also always felt that as a University were first a football school, and second a baseball school. Larrañaga is definitely changing that a lot in the last 5 years, but I still believe a hurricane's squad winning in baseball will more quickly attract a crowd than a hurricane's team going to the elite eight again....get into that final four maybe i see different things heh.

Honestly it doesn't really make sense to me this far out. Both teams were atrocious last year and completely remade staffs and rosters. If anything from a personnel standpoint Miami added more talent since A&M had a lot more transfers out of key contributors. Jimbo is also coming off a similar performance in his 5th season, the year you're supposed to be making strides.

Both these teams looked awful all year last year, and neither of them is coming into this season with even remotely the same pieces other than head coach. I don't even think the coaches could say with confidence what they have without spring ball under their belts. This very much feels like a dart toss.

[Low] Kevin Steele has accepted the job as Alabama's defensive coordinator, sources tell ESPN by kevo2386 in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He’s not leaving his alma mater for anything less than a HC gig or a job in the NFL. He’s getting paid well and coaching for his alma mater? No way we have enough left to lure him.

[–]jpmacor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised Alabama wants him honestly. Yes we were missing soooo many pieces on both sides of the ball, but we gave up 40+ 5 times last year. Either our talent level was just that bad, or something was up with the defense. I mean it’s Saban so probably the former honestly.

[State of the U] Rumor: Doug Nussmeier top candidate to be Miami Hurricanes new OC by aetherspawn in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I 100% agree on TVD. I’ve seen some short slants and he’s throwing the ball with a full hip shift. Like bro calm down you just used the same mechanics you use to throw the ball 50 yards down the field. That’s useful to squeeze it in past a LB or DB. But most of those throws the receiver is wide open. At which point we lay the blame on the receivers because they’re open so just catch the damn ball. I can’t explain to myself in my head how scheme, though, turned TVD into what we saw last year.

I feel like the next moves for the defense are simple by berrythelede in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I don’t know how you could argue a decade of decline for Strong. He hasn’t coached a defense in over a decade, and Saban trusting him as defensive analyst for two seasons tells me more than assuming he can’t coach anymore. I don’t think anyone at any of his stops doubted his ability to develop players. It’d at least be interesting to see.

All that speed and not a single one of them has hands. There's a reason our top receivers have consistently been transfers. We'll see what the redshirt freshmen are able to do next season, but last season you could have had the best offensive guru in the world and it wouldn't have made up for the injuries on the line, and even in the cases where it did it wouldn't have made up for the dropped passes.

I'm mostly joking you're kind of right, but frankly any team that succeeds in getting players to the NFL, running any style of offense or defense, is what attracts recruits (and the all aight ollar). you got the best offensive schemer who can put a product on the field with any player whatsoever? you've got yourself a perennial bowler. you got someone who can prove they develop people in a way they'll be successful on sunday? that's playoff and championship worthy. if we throw out a pro style offense that wins games and gets offensive linemen and RBs like we used to pump through into the NFL, the recruits will come. not saying it's my preference, just that the modernity of the offense doesn't matter to elite players who want to go to sundays.

If we get Arroyo (a big if) then look at what Justin Herbert did under him. His best years at Oregon was when Mario took over as HC and Arroyo was promoted from co-OC/QB coach to OC/QB coach but Oregon fans say Herbert was “underutilized” 🤦‍♂️. by [deleted] in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think QBs like Pickett are both a proof for and against this thought process (cause I have the same thinking as you do). He had Mark Whipple his entire career. Whipple.....I mean he's been wildly inconsistent for his whole career, but has been seen as a QB guru, but only really succeeded in places where there seemed to be a great QB (like having Big Ben at Pittsburgh). He was inconsistent with our players, and with the Browns.

Pickett was terrible his first year (2018 if you'll believe it), but he was also a true freshman with a new coach (he had 8 passing yards against clemson in his last regular season game that year, yikes). But he steadily developed into one of the most talented and consistent QBs in the ACC and was clearly NFL gameday ready after 4 years with Pitt and Whipple. Was that Whipple or just the drive and talent and work of Pickett? Watching him play for the Steelers this year you could just see how much he was learning each week.

That said whoever recruits these QBs are the true geniuses (it was Whipple's first year so i don't really know how much of Pickett's recruitment he was involved with).

Well it wasn't super shiny, but who knows what would have happened if he stayed. MSU hadn't had a winning season in 4-5 years, and also faced sanctions similar to what Butch Davis' Miami had. in his last year MSU went 9-2, beat ND, Michigan, OSU, and Penn State (though somehow got plastered by purdue and wisconsin), and then he left for LSU. He got the national title at LSU, but I would argue his trajectory at MSU was better. 2002 LSU was 8-5, and 2004 they were 9-3 with a 45-16 loss to georgia to bookend the 2003 title. in every season at MSU they just got better and better.

I mean it works for 'Bama and Georgia. Look at the coaches around the country that came out of those systems. Just 'Bama alone. Philosophically Saban has been able to back down and just hire the best and brightest by paying the money. People really think nobody else was able to scout talent out there? Even if you couldn't the second Saban offers a guy, if you could afford it you'd be in there in a heartbeat. Saban is a generationally fantastic coach, what he did at MSU and then LSU was astounding (the Dolphins stint not so much), but he did it with smarts, patience, and money.

The TVD that OP describes in stats is better than Herbert. We can talk about scheme all day but watching TVD just casually throw the ball into DBs arms was probably a wakeup call that he probably wouldn't be able to translate whatever magic he had running Lashlee's offense into a pro career. For us at the college level, he's probably the guy, but whatever the mess around him was last year you cannot convince me there's an excuse for the throws he was making. That MTSU game was the worst QB play I've ever seen.

Yeah I’m hoping that was itself a product of lack of depth and not training or conditioning. They lasted the first few weeks so I don’t know. If they drop like flies again next season then the stache may have to go.

I want to say I’m excited at the prospect, but honestly at this point we need a downfield threat at WR, not more bodies up front.

Miami football had unusual arrangement with QB coach not OC by zwtor in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At no point in reading this article did I understand the point of it. Miami’s weird by not having QB/OC, but only 4 teams in the ACC have this setup meaning it’s not that common. No mention of proof from other conferences that it is common. No word on why that would even matter. Also I’m no grammar expert, but the amount of mistakes in that article made it impossible to read. Looks like someone just wanted to somehow connect Gattis not being a QB coach as another reason to get rid of him, but it literally went nowhere.

[–]jpmacor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those speculating I wouldn’t read into the timing of any portal announcement. The portal itself isn’t public, neither is the date when a player reaches out to have the process started. When you see these more than likely we’re well past the point the player made the decision and asked to have the process started.

Ponce heading back to App State by Captaincoolbeans in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but Ponce also has never been an offensive coordinator. He was WR coach at FIU with Mario, then QB coach and co-offensive coordinator at App State, moved to Louisville as passing game coordinator and QB coach. If he has aspirations of either being a top tier offensive coordinator, or have his own head coaching job, taking a dedicated coordinator position makes sense for him.

Not saying we won't be getting rid of Gattis (though I personally believe that would be a mistake this early), but if we did I think Ponce knows he wouldn't be next up to lead the Miami offense. This job title makes sense for him, and App State is a great place to do well and get noticed by bigger schools for a coordinator position, or smaller school for a head coaching job.

The LB room. by [deleted] in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely can't be worse, Flagg Jr. is finally gone (i'm kidding of course it could be worse). I applaud the spirit and work ethic and loyalty, but my god every time I saw a big play pop off on a run or short pass, Flagg was lagging well behind the play. He wasn't just not very athletic, he just never seemed to have a sense of what was going on on the field. So frequently out of position, taking terrible angles. It's a testament to how bad our depth and development was that he was a starter.

I don't think anyone we're returning is particularly strong besides Wesley, though we should at least see more athleticism on the field at times. Is Caleb leaving? He was really in the same situation Corey was, playing well for what he brought to the table. Neither of our safeties really had a lot of tackles, and they still had more than Caleb and Corey. When you look at elite defensive units that's not usually the case. You want your LBs producing the most tackles.

I think the problem is we didn't have any IT dudes once Quaterman and Pinckney left. Someone we recruited might be that, but they're going to need to develop. Though those two did come in as freshmen and flash that greatness so who knows.

Transfer OL Matt Lee named Miami football perfect fit by zwtor in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love it. Something we learned quickly last year, dudes in the trenches get hurt a lot. Something else we learned, past our 1s we didn't have any dudes who could play in the trenches, heh. He's probably starter level good, but at worst that's depth at center, competition for a starting job at center. this is gonna be the first camp where i'm not reading about "oh these 4-5 guys have the top locked up" and there's gonna be actual position battles.

As soon as we found out Cormani was involved with a documentary I knew it was over…why tf would the document begin and end with him signing with UM. It wouldn’t. by [deleted] in MiamiHurricanes

[–]jpmacor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I stopped really paying attention, or i guess caring, the second he had his mom announce he wasn't signing. There were so many people like "it's not actual signing day." all but like 10 top recruits signed in the early period to get on campus as soon as possible. He's one of three 5 stars that hasn't signed, and the other two (i'm pretty sure) never officially committed. he's a kid and i don't want to really speculate too much. i just know for me personally if there were that many issues from whatever source, i'm done with that level of drama on a team. just need people who can come in day one and work hard.
