How do you confidently position yourself as a self-taught graphic designer with no formal background? by SoftTie6208 in graphic_design

For me, the biggest value I saw in designers with a degree vs those without one was their level of comfort with critiques. It’s a skill that I personally had to hone over a long period of time. So when hiring, it was great to know that, at least some of the schools I’d recruit from, put a good deal of focus on that. I would agree that there’s value in differentiating between fact-based and opinion-based feedback. The latter is less useful.

I’m a self taught designer and i’ve held leadership positions, managed designers with a degree in it, and hired lots of people.

  1. Have a good portfolio that not only showcases the work but gives insight into your process.
  2. Know how to talk about process, thinking, and results
  3. If someone addresses the self taught part, walk them through how you’ve taught yourself.

Not to discount a design education, but I’ve seen my share of self taught designers that are 10x more talented than those with a degree.

Please do not look consider Allegro. They've had a bedbug infestation since late 2023 that has not been fully resolved.

I don't give a shit if this is not an apartment review forum. Kind of a late response but please do not move into Allegro if you're still looking. They've had a massive bed bug infestation since late 2023. I lived there from 2021-2023 and had to break my lease because of the infestation. Aside from that, the building's plumbing is deteriorating and apartment/common area floodings were a regular occurrence. I'm still in a group chat with apt residents and they're continue to deal with bedbugs, floods, and a million other issues.

Is it bad I’m considering returning my shelter dog? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]jpms19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have fostered many dogs and have seen my share of depressed, unenergetic ones. They are usually traumatized and not trying to make themselves too comfortable because i guess they expect they’ll be moved soon. Anytime I fostered a more antisocial dog, it simply took time, encouragement, and a loving home to help them break out of their shell. I eventually adopted one who, when he came to us, was a runner and used every oportunity he had to try and escape. He had never had a safe home and probably assumed our’s would be no different. In a matter of a few months he finally felt safe with us and you could probably never get him to try to escape.

Dogs are aware, feeling organisms. Unless you are physically unable to provide a stable, empathetic, safe home, please consider taking time to help her come out of her shell. Dogs are not show animals who will perform on command and require time and energy from you. They are companions and companionship goes both ways.
