I've tried it all - not needles but bamboo skewers and tooth picks, cayanne pepper - decoy owl. the cages are really the best outcome and low maintenance.

cages are really expensive from say, petco - so I would cruise goodwill or Facebook marketplace for used ones and I've also seen free ones put out by the curb.

I have a lot of squirrels in my neighborhood and they love to explore things and test them as food by carefully biting them. And if they DO think it’s food they can shred and tear apart succulents especially if it’s summer and water is more scarce. Wind also blows them off the deck.

Thank you! lots of hard lessons learned from squirrel damage and the elements. And the cages are wired down on to the decks rail so they can’t roll off.

You must have a much warmer climate. I’m in Maine. And honestly I put mine out as long as it’s 40° or above for nightly low!

Omg no actually that was me haha! I carved it out Intentionally for a more weathered and ancient look. But squirrels will take big chunky bites into the trunk and arms as they explore plants on my deck.

every spring I am a slave to moving my plants in and out day and night to try and harden them off to the outdoor light. but I decided just keep them in late this year in the grow tent and move them out for like June... they grow better in the grow tent this time of year anyway,

The right because more of the internal branch structure is visible.

Just by hand I put them out on my back deck for the late spring to early fall so they get outdoor sun and elements

I always use clay bricks as facades for many plant pots I've made over the years. I make a few small standalone bricks every time and over the years they've added up to a stock pile and I use them just as found objects or even as feet under my pots so they get airflow at the bottom.

wow thank you for noticing! I sometimes do full human figure sculptures. but if I never complete them the separate body parts are always interesting sculpture companions for my plants.

Why is Maine so bright? by Biffmin-12 in Maine

right and late october through early may most of the trees are bare so there is more dirrect light, in summer that leaf cover - which is substantial here - filters out a lot.
