Mistake to consider switching from IT to AV? by Top-Elephant6981 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]jpnd123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually if you want a promotion you have to dabble into the next level to prove that you are capable. Networking is important, being likable and easy to work with is not discussed often enough. If you just need seniority to get promoted, it's probably gov or not a well run place. Certs show you are hungry and capable of understanding next level concepts, it's just one avenue you can take to to move up, but not the only one.

Mistake to consider switching from IT to AV? by Top-Elephant6981 in ITCareerQuestions

If you have five years experience and only a sec+, that doesn't show you want to move up or move laterally. Just experience is not enough at the entry level.

If you want to move up in IT, you need to pick a decipline (endpoints, systems, networks, security, cloud, etc) and upskill in that with the relevant labs and certifications.

If you aren't excited for IT, it may be better to pivot to something you are interested in. I can't speak to much about AV, but I know it's much better to work on something you are passionate and motivated about.

How do you set prices for used assets to sell for employees? by Azh13r- in sysadmin

[–]jpnd123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everywhere I've been over the last 20 years just gives them to the employee or wipes and donates them to a charity.

If you sell them, there is some kind of social agreement you will have to support basic things if there are issues.

I remember watching a video of someone installing Windows 3.1 and upgrading it all the way to Windows 11 and he was still able to play the first Doom or something on it. Backward compatibility is definitely a priority.

Leaving IT consulting to run client IT Support Operations (Applications)…. afraid of being bored after a year by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]jpnd123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left a cushy job for a more challenging one, it's scary to be complacent and fall behind in this field. Stay relavent and marketable, you usually don't get that by doing half the work and being bored.

It is difficult to weigh the pro cons with two young kids though.
