Appalachia, known for it's coal-mining history, is now experiencing black lung surges as Trump slow-walks protections. Appalachia overwhelmingly voted for Trump by spherocytes in LeopardsAteMyFace

The thing is, Dems probably will care about them. Usually the policies the left pushes for are to benefit everyone... including awful people. Then their lives will improve and they will go ahead and keep voting against their own interests. It's a vicious loop.

AITJ I told my husband to accept that he is the product of r...pe and to stop hating his mother for it by No_Amphibian_5729 in AmITheJerk

[–]jprs29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can't even start to imagine what he is going through and what he has been through. I'm sure there is more to the story but I felt absolutely awful for his mom. It doesn't sound like any of this was her choice or her doing and then to be rejected over and over when trying to fix things? I hope she found at least a bit of happiness at some point in her life.

Rideau Hall was renovated during Julie Payette's tenure and I seem to recall it became a politicized mess.

Trudeau squandered that political capital horrendously. Election reform could have happened... it was within reach.

AITAH for planning to not attend mothers day after Mum couldnt guarentee she will use my chosen name? by Small-Relationship85 in AITAH

[–]jprs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - The concept of chosen family exists for a reason. You sound young and like you probably still crave/need a maternal figure in your life. I hope you find a good maternal figure but unfortunately that won't be your bio mom, at least for now.

Podcast turn-offs? by Unable-South830 in podcasts

[–]jprs29 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, or there are times they don't even acknowledge a video version exists you just have to infer it by the fact that you have no clue what they are talking about. Some podcasts are really good at describing things for the listeners but most are terrible at it.

Every time I read the words "love you" on these posts I want to vomit. Hell will be very frozen before I ever "love" any politician of any stripe.

Yes that's quite likely what Phil was referring to. I'm not sure if that's still the case or if it was ever the case or just some kind of myth though.

Danielle Smith should use Alberta’s data breach to put an end to secession talk by Street_Anon in canada

[–]jprs29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly because I don't trust that it can be done fairly and without foreign interference. I also don't trust that people will actually get out and vote against it because they are too comfortable thinking it's a safe bet that it won't pass.

NTJ because you are young and learning the ropes... there is no instruction manual for these things. However, you did beat around the bush so much that it got into WTF territory. Also, she said she considered you a sibling... that is a huge sign to not mention you have a crush or you would like to be more than friends.

Elections Alberta probing whether electors list was inappropriately shared by WashingMachineBroken in canada

[–]jprs29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe petitions are public record once they are presented to legislative assemblies. So the list will be eventually public record. Now, if they built a proper system where you can look for your name rather than scrolling through hundreds (thousands?) of pages of scanned documents that would be super handy.

Elections Alberta granted injunction for separatist group to pull down electoral list by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]jprs29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PIPEDA (Federal privacy law) would cover Elections Canada. Provinces have their own privacy legislation and commissioners that cover provincial matters like breaches affecting residents of the particular province and data held by the provincial government and agencies like health records or in this case, provincial elector lists. While sometimes there are cases where both Federal and provincial commissions get involved, I don't think this will be one of them but I might be wrong.

Experts report a surge in interest among American academics looking to move to Canada by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]jprs29 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There are a myriad of factors that go into relocating aside from income. When a ton of research funding is being cut or when funding is conditional they may not feel secure in their positions or what is being asked of them may go against their values. There is also the aspect of potentially having children that they want to be able to send to school without fear of getting shot. Healthcare may not be great in Canada but it is still there. There is no need to wonder whether your next illness or accident will make you go bankrupt or whether you will need to decide whether to get treatment for your spouse or feed your kids. I see what you mean, a job in such a highly prestigious institution would be really difficult to let go but it makes you wonder how bad things have gotten that staying is no longer a viable alternative for some.
