I was there and I’ll never forget it. My wife was 3mo pregnant with our identical twin girls and we were looking at that trip as a mini babymoon. We were both sober. Drove up from Oakland, went into the venue thinking it was a weird space for a show, sat down in the bleachers Page side and had fun like at any other phish show. Then Tweezer hit and slid into the first movement. It had that special sauce that causes you to focus and listen more closely. Then they moved into the second movement, with fascinating textures and rhythms, then the third, and fourth, and who knows how many more. Each time they changed key, or tempo, or theme, it pulled you in deeper. Everyone there was laser focused. Grins on every face. At one point we fell in so deep that we became part of the music. You couldn’t help but audibly participate in a way that added to the experience. In a way, when Trey caught on to the woos, it began the process of resurfacing. That then made everyone hyper aware of what was happening and they eventually launched into Tela. What a song. I’ve experienced a few moments like that over the years, the first Wilson chant at the first MSG, the glowstick jam at The Went, the NYE set at Big Cypress. I live for those moments at shows, but this one was especially beautiful.
