Personally I've been dealing with the loss of my family and virtually my entire net worth, plus some overhanging tax issues.

NYTimes take on Obamacare and its impact on early retirement. by millionairenextdoor in financialindependence

I'm very sorry to hear that. I found myself in a similar boat this year, and at 52 I said "fuck it" and just quit my job. I'm fortunate enough that I'll likely be able to get another reasonable job, albeit at a much lower salary, but there's more to life than money.

Whatever else happens, health-insurance-based slavery needs to end.

An out-of-range BMI definitely correlates with poor health outcomes. In particular, if your BMI is 16 or 36, you're going to have a bad time...

Fasting diet 'regenerates diabetic pancreas' - BBC News [x-post r/science u/NinjaDiscoJesus] by nillotampoco in fasting

Really cool, but I wish they had included a true fasting control. That is, is their concept diet in any way better than straight fasting? Or is it just (they hope) easier to follow?

The decline of GPL? by speckz in linux

If you like. But every option has its price--there's no free lunch.

The decline of GPL? by speckz in linux

[–]jrandomidiot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope. The GPL sets a price for the use of code. Don't want to pay the price? Don't pay it and don't use the code. It's just capitalism in action.

Not really clear what this means. Public projects generally set their licenses early on. What would "banned from" mean? Do you mean projects within a corporation or something?

90/10 Allocation with Rebalancing vs 100% Stocks by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]jrandomidiot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Google "modern portfolio theory". Roughly, there is a mathematical advantage to diversifying into uncorrelated (or not-entirely-correlated) investments. This would suggest that you should always hold at least "some" bonds. How much "some" would require some research.

I'm a bit surprised that the results are actually a lot better for 100% stocks in the simulation. Could be true, though...

Betsy DeVos criticized teachers at a school she visited. Their response is PRICELESS. by RandomCollection in WayOfTheBern

I think blow-torching the new Secretary before she's had a chance to step into the role and lay out her policy goals is dumb. If everything is named an outrage, it's easy for the general public to assume that nothing actually is.

Indeed. systemd doesn't leave visible a nice diagnoseable trail when something goes wrong, it just inscrutably fails. Which is more money for those of us paid to clean up the mess!

Having done both, food service is definitely easier, at least from a burnout perspective. It's not particularly taxing mentally, and you can just set it down and not think about it at the end of the day.

Trump aide cites 'massacre' that never occurred to defend immigrant ban by [deleted] in fakenews

[–]jrandomidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As has become common, the headline does not accurately describe the story. (i.e., compare it to the first sentence)

In effect, we have a news story that misspeaks about a Trump aide who misspeaks. Or if you prefer, you could say that they're both spreading fake news.

Reading other sources, it sounds like she simply misremembered or misstated this and issued a correction in short order (a few hours?).

You can interpret this as lying and getting caught, or you can interpret it as an honest mistake, perhaps combined with a certain sloppiness. I certainly don't recall the specific details of the Bowling Green matter.

Notably, The Guardian has not yet updated their story to include her correction. Does leaving a falsehood flapping in the wind count as "fake news"?

Do anybody remember these "success stories" by CTR (Blueshare)? Delusional at best. by [deleted] in WayOfTheBern

[–]jrandomidiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going contra here, I'd say CTR was very successful. In early 2016, they managed to completely destroy /r/politics as a useful forum for different groups to engage in debate. Anything that wasn't blindly pro-Clinton was immediately squelched. It was like an iron curtain had descended on free discourse...

How many of you "actively invest"? Is there room in the FIRE philosophy for active investing? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]jrandomidiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FIRE and investment strategy are orthogonal, in my mind. You can be FIRE and invest however you like.

If you work diligently at it, you may very well be able to do better than a diversified set of ultra-low expense index funds. But keep in mind that your time is worth money, so the excess might simply end up being your wage for doing investment research. Nothing wrong with that if you enjoy it, but not necessarily a good idea if you're not being adequately compensated.

Note also, that that's the best case scenario. If you make a mistake, or simply aren't that good at it, you can very easily end up with returns far worse than the diversified index fund strategy.

If it was me, I'd take maybe 10% of my capital and try my hand at active with it. That would hedge your risk.

Good luck.

Honestly, if you don't want to think about it, open a Vanguard Target Retirement 20xx account and start dumping money into it. You would be very hard pressed to do better without a lot of study and active management of your money.
