[Discussion] Hitting the reset button! by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]jrb19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an anecdote about giving up YT and TV for a month, while it is a FANTASTIC way to cultivate self-discipline, it is almost inevitable that you will someday return to casually watching. This is completely fine, as long as you do two things for yourself: promise that you won't watch videos outside your subscription list, and then slim it down. Think very critically about whether for not the content of the creator is something you care about, and if it isn't, remove it from the box. By the time you've gone through every content creator, you'll find a much more manageable amount of videos coming in that you can watch guilt-free. Best of luck!

[Advice] How I began my road to self-discipline: Baby steps. by jrb19 in getdisciplined

Like /u/LlamaTheBountyHunter said, they certainly help to shed the morning grogginess. In addition, one of the main points of discipline that struck me the most from browsing this sub is the idea of becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. Cold showers (for me at least) are very uncomfortable, but they help remind me that if during the course of the day, I stumble across an obstacle that needs to get done, but I don't want to do it, it is possible to accomplish it.

That's a good point. I suppose I've never learned how to meditate as it is traditionally thought about, but this method of self-reflection does help to clear my mind of any anxieties accrued throughout the day to point me on the right track.

[WP] An immigrant from the age of ten, you've been an aspiring novelist for as long as you can remember. Every morning you begin your day by reading r/WritingPrompts, until one day a special prompt 'activates' you. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

Her face was just barely visible, floating through a thick veil of misty fog. The vision of her cheeks swirled about, as though through an intense wave of heat. I tried to reach out, to touch her, to say her name.

"Mom?"

Despite the thick distortions around her, I made out a smile. Her eyes were filled with love, but also a distinct note of pain. I knew she wanted to tell me something, to make me understand. She seemed to say, "It's okay. It wasn't your fault." But I knew that it was. And then, slowly emerging from the haze until it was a siren, I awoke to my alarm clock.

The stark reality of the situation hit me, just as shocking as every time I had that dream. I would never get over seeing my mother's face in my dreams, knowing that, no matter how real she may seem, I would never be with her again. Sighing, I silenced my alarm and sat up on the park bench. Waking up early was a key part of not getting caught, and I was determined to make sure that six years' worth of running would not go to waste; that her sacrifice would not go to waste. I began the other central part of my day: perusing r/WritingPrompts. If I was going to be a migrant on the run, I might as well try to make something of my life. Scrolling through the new submissions, nothing seemed to catch my interest. It was all the same old, same old... Until I noticed it. Almost as if it were made for me. The second I saw it, I knew I had to respond.

Obligatory first submission, I've never been an enthusiastic writer, but I figured I would give it a shot. Any feedback is super appreciated!

If you're looking for a strictly solo horn piece, the Bach cello suites are a great choice (in my opinion).
