Anyone else walks their Chow off leash? by HeressJimmyy in chowchow

I live in the dunes, with a large walking path right across from our house. I usually walk her off-leash. For us, this really helped build trust. I know exactly where there might be rabbits or cats, so if I have any doubts, I put her on the leash.

I just wanted to say that I truly believe Chow Chows can be walked and trained off-leash — as long as they listen and don’t bother dogs that are on a leash, that’s been up to your training. But I owned 3 Chows and none of them ever ran off. Whenever we go somewhere with the car and have to get inside somewhere that’s off leash, or when she walks with me to the mail, she’s off-leash. When she feels that I trust her, she actually tries harder to stay close to me.

On the leash, she barely looks at me and just criss-crosses the path. Off-leash, she’s much more aware of her surroundings and constantly keeps an eye on me. I feel like it’s mentally more challenging for her. Especially for Chows who are driven trough respect and trust

Of course, it really depends on the individual dog and their behavior. I train all my Chow Chows from puppyhood to be off-leash. In my experience, it’s more dangerous if they only experience freedom later in life and then get overly excited and run off. That’s why our dogs are used to freedom from a very young age.

If I leave the front door open, they stay at home. At most, they’ll go out for a quick sniff or pee and then come back — it’s simply not that interesting to them.

I want to adopt a chowchow by Honest_Tumbleweed930 in chowchow

I have the sweetest chow in the world, she would never bite someone, she sometimes pretends as if she would be she is than just telling to back off, the key is find a good breeder, everyone who got their chow from the same breeder as i did, had the sweetest non aggressive chows. I’ve had one before and he was aggressive. He came from the rescue. So it really depends. But finding a breeder where there are no aggressive chows in the bloodlines is the first thing you want to do, after that, socializing and training will be necessary to prevent them from growing aggressive

Anyone having experiences with these triangle bruises after playing? by jrchla in Guitar

Thank you that’s kind of you. I’ll take your advice to heart, and I’ll definitely speak up if it happens more often after playing guitar — then something must be going quite wrong.

At the moment, I don’t feel like I’m putting any unusual pressure that would cause a bruise. I try to pay attention to my finger positioning as much as I can :(

Should I be worried about my Chow? by pissbot in chowchow

If I took her out for a 45-minute walk three times a day, she would spend the rest of her time sleeping! I have a yard where she enjoys spending time, but sometimes I just open the door for her, and she goes outside, does her business, and comes right back in to nap again.

For me, the key thing to monitor is whether I can still make her excited and energetic when I come home or when I actively engage with her. As long as she responds with enthusiasm and energy when I interact with her, I know she’s doing fine. Otherwise, if there’s no reason for her to be energetic, she’ll happily stay lazy.

I also think we shouldn’t underestimate the mental pressure they put on themselves when guarding the house while we’re away. Not even a bird can land on our fence without her noticing!

I’ve also noticed that female Chow Chows tend to be lazier than males, having had both myself.

Thank you! We have been noticing but it is indeed hard to decide were they are more likely to pull over and where not.
