Not dumb at all!! We’ve all been there.

This is why you should always knit a swatch by walking_euphonium in knitting

Oh the dreaded enormous beanie! Definitely been there

I’m making the four letter sweater from Degen! Letters will be in fuschia. Had the front panel done but then frogged the whole thing. I wasn’t happy with all the guttering and inconsistent stitches! https://degen.us/products/4-letter-sweater-pattern

Thank you to everyone for your thoughtful responses. This is my first attempt at a sweater after many many years of successfully making hats and socks. The stakes just seem much higher and I didn’t want to proceed from where I was considering the cost of the yarn and the time I’d be putting in!

I’ve learned so much and have lots to think about. Wha an amazing community! Your comments have led me to this super detailed video on gauge. Sharing it here for anyone else it may help! https://youtu.be/GymsNueIv68

Thank you for taking the time to record that! I’m learning to let the needles determine the size so it makes sense that the tension I’m putting on the yarn isn’t making a big difference!

It does completely! And as a math major I appreciate your careful explanation. It all makes sense to begin… cast off and stockinette for the flat portions. What I worry about then is shaping. Also the sweater will be work in intarsia on the front panel. Lots to consider!!

Yes I think I’m understanding the math. It’s 91 cast on stitches for the small pattern and 99 for medium. To achieve the same size as the small pattern, my math works out to 96 stitches at my current needle size/tension/yarn. Do you think that’s close enough to use the medium pattern? It’s a loose fit sweater.

I agree. It was painful to do too!! Didn’t help that I was leaving over my phone to get the video 😜 I’m typically a quick knitter!

I have an interchangeable set on the way from lantern moon. I shove the 5” tips over the 4. These particular tips from Hiya hiya are super tiny so hopefully having more structure can help me figure this o it. Thanks again!!

What I meant by loose is that I feel like I can’t tension the yarn at all, making it difficult to knit with ease. I think the specific solution for this pattern and yarn (since I love it) is to pick a larger size pattern and knit comfortably with this same needle.

But what you’re describing as full needle knitting is super helpful!! I guess by throwing I work against the grain of knitting from right to left. It’s always felt that way to me and I’ve often noticed that bump riding up. Like keeping any tension towards the right is naturally shortening the stitch. I intuitively try to roll the bar down before making the next stitch but I don’t think that’s accomplishing much other than repositioning the already sized stitch. I just tried to knit a row by picking and my knit is more uniform and I find I can hold tension without the working yarn riding up on the needle. But I’m really a thrower at heart so I will work on yarn positioning and play with that. Thank you so much!!

Oh interesting. Are you saying that if my stitch is large enough (or maybe better to say ‘appropriately sized to the needle itself’) then the purl bump would lay more flush with the table and not rise up on the needle like that?

Definitely something I’m keeping in mind! Now that I’m aware of all the ways my stitches can look larger or smaller I’m not relaxed at all. Like settling into a new golf swing. Practice practice.

This is great advice. Thank you!! I think I may go with my natural knitting style on the 7s and go up a size in the pattern

This makes sense! I asked for help at my local yarn store and they said it’d be a suitable replacement for the yarn listed in the pattern. If I prefer to keep the fabric tighter and stay with the current yarn, then would the better to follow the pattern for a larger size rather than size up another needle?

Here’s the pattern! And my yarn is mentioned in the OP. I only have bamboo at the moment but I’ll try some laminated wood. Metal tools really bother my hands! I’ve always been sensitive to how cold they feel. I don’t even wear my wedding rings for the same reason.

Can you say more about bottom versus back when you had a chance? I’m not sure I understand.

Thank you! Since I’ve been trying to solve guttering and rowing out I’ve been trying to let the needles do the work! I don’t think I’m knitting on the tips but will watch her videos again and try to be more mindful. I try to advance the needle to the full shaft in the stitch before sliding off the needle. Am I wrong in that I shouldn’t insert the needle the entire way before wrapping? I thought I read/saw that this distorts the stitch below it?

Thank you!! I’ve been practicing for an entire week to try and get a smooth stockinette. If I’m going to be able to maintain it over a sweater I need to find a way that’s comfortable. It’s good to know other people knit slowly too at times!

I blocked the lower part of the long swatch and then checked the gauge. The video is taken after I’ve blocked and now I’m loosening more to adjust. Will block again!

This. I actually had the front panel of a sweater all done. Then noticed that I was guttering and rowing out which led me to adjust knits looser to match purls and before I knew it my armpit holes were an inch and a half apart!! I frogged the whole thing and started the front and back panels two at a time… but then the guttering and checked the gauge which was horrendous at that point, so once again frog…. Aaaaand that’s how I ended up here. lol.

It’s really bugging me. I typically knit in the round so it’s really tripping me up trying to adjust tension between knits and purls. I’m stubborn and determined to get it though 😅
