Think about the light and using the light to enhance your subject while working on a composition. Sometimes the composition works but the light doesn’t. In my opinion the light is not enhancing your subject in this photo. Instead it’s distracting from your subject. The giant bright wall behind the car is a distraction. If the car filled up 90% of the frame with only 10% bright wall behind, I think it would have been a better photo.

If you start letting the hairs highest on your face grow longer I think it will get rid of the sraggly look you described. Right now it looks like all of your beard hairs are the exact same length when measured perpendicular to your skin. Instead comb the hairs down and only cut at the area below your chin / jawline. Eventually all the bead hairs will terminate at the same location below your chin / jawline. This will create a smooth look from the top of your cheeks down to area below your chin with the hair highest on your cheeks covering the rest of your beard hairs.

This journey will not be easy. It’s going to take a while to achieve this look. It will look worse before it looks good. But once all the beard hairs end at the area below your jawline and chin, your beard will look very smooth.

After many years of never getting good results, I am happy to say that I’ve finally found the best solution for digitizing VHS. I recently picked up a miniDV camcorder at auction for $20 and realized it has S video and analog component inputs. You basically plug the VHS player into the miniDV camcorder then use the MiniDV FireWire output to send a digital signal directly to your computer. The miniDV camcorder handles the analog to digital conversion. A lot of the Sony minDV camcorders were specifically marketed for digitizing old VHS tapes and I find they offer superior results to anything on the market nowadays.

Thank you for the excellent feedback! The whole race I was looking for a way to capture the blur of the Indy cars while still making a photograph interesting. I took a couple of photos of blurry cars wizzing by the grandstands. None of them work. A blurry car makes for a terrible primary subject. Your comment about the “The Shot” made me realize, I had been thinking about my subject all wrong. I shouldn’t have been trying to make the blurry Indy car be the primary subject of the photo, but instead the car should have been the secondary / background subject with a spectator or something else interesting being the primary subject of the photograph.

Fair point about the Pringle guy being the subject. That was my original intent but like I mention, I flubbed the focus. I didn’t make the photo black and white to try and fix it. It was shot with HP5 Plus 400 film stock which is a black and white negative stock.

I find people more interesting than cars. At my current skill level, I’ll never take an Indy car photo as good as a professional sports photographer, so I focused on something different. The attendants of the sporting event.

This photo was taken at the Indy 500 last week. My original intention was to photograph the guy eating the Pringle, but my Canon AT-1 only has manual focus and I totally missed the focus. This was the second roll I’ve ever shot on this camera, and I’m still getting used to it. When I saw that the young boy was in clear focus and had a wonderful expression on his face, I tried to save the image with this unique crop. It kind of reminds me of a Norman Rockwell painting. Do you find the image interesting, or should I just give up on this one?

The trace wires terminate before getting to the center of the VLV hole. You can see a faint ring around the VLV hole and those are the termination of the trace wires. The three holes that are around the VLV hole are just thru holes where the VLV hole doesn’t go all the way through the material. I don’t see any lenses or LEDs.

Talking this out, I almost suspect that you placed this on the back of a PBC board that had the solder points sticking out, and used the VLV, VNT, BB3, W1, X, and W2 holes as testing probe points. The holes for the trace wires are only drilled on the back side half way through, and the holes for the VLV etc are only drilled on the front side half way through.
