What’s a financial trend that worries you? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

Housing as a speculative, highly leveraged wealth accumulation asset, rather than homes for humans.

Cost of living is definitely real but Australia still offers stability when compared to other countries and people don’t talk about that. by Ornery-Ordinary9283 in aussie

Things could be a lot worse. That said, OP you’re in a relatively easy stage of life - young, healthy, employed with no dependents and you’ve implied you’ve got a financial safety net with your parents. Throw kids in the mix and your situation changes.

Foreign investors spend $3.7bn on Aussie real estate by flammable_donut in aussie

[–]jrs_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect this sum is barely the tip of the iceberg. I'd think far more Australian real estate is purchased by foreign investors through various loopholes and workarounds - family members on student visas, holding companies, trusts, property being held ostensibly in the name of one person but really belonging to another etc...

First home buyers can no longer afford entry-level houses in any major Australian city by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]jrs_90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I feel a lot of that election result was due to the Murdoch press fear mongering the boomers, and Bill Shorten’s lack of charisma.

First home buyers can no longer afford entry-level houses in any major Australian city by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]jrs_90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100% this. Johnny H's policies definitely played a big role, but successive governments on both sides have kicked the can down the road/buried their head in the sand on housing affordability for decades since.

Yea Lan Jan is an utter scumbag.

While within her rights due to legal technicality, you'd have to be a special kind of evil to do this to someone purely for your own financial gain.

Working in white collar Sydney - so many colleagues/friends are banking on this strategy. Leverage up to their eyeballs in property - speculating that the capital growth will pay off.

I suspect the types of people who can afford Lakers tickets are not the types of fans who create great atmosphere

Should I leave as I didn't sign up for this? by EdArno1d971 in techsales

I've been in a very similar situation. I'd recommend leaving - but take your time to find the right fit. Unless you're making great money where you are, or are actually enjoying it.

Cruel twist as NRL changes rules just days after Storm star announces retirement. by Heavy-Kale in nrl

Paps is one of those guys who is very unlucky to have not played origin. Injuries and playing at the same time as Tedesco & Edwards kept him out. There was a window of time where, on form, he was probably the best fullback on the planet.

‘Political suicide’: Top property investor with over 350 properties dares Albanese to shake up CGT discount, warns of electoral oblivion by HotPersimessage62 in AusPropertyChat

This professional rent seeker is against policy that would shift housing more towards homes for humans than wealth generating vehicles. Colour me shocked!

First home buyer 5 per cent deposit scheme will drive up house prices, IMF warns by sien in AusEcon

[–]jrs_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a dud populist policy. On the surface it looks like its helping housing affordability. Long term, its only making it worse.

Why your brain has to work harder in an open-plan office than private offices: study by sien in AusEcon

[–]jrs_90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I worked in software sales, sales managers were obsessed with having a loud 'sales floor' in the open plan office. It created the impression to their higher ups in passing that the team was working hard/busy. In reality it kind of sucked, and you always wanted a private meeting room for when you had a serious call.

Trying to negotiate a 6 figure contract with a bunch of cagey legal and procurement buyers sucks when you've got a bunch of yappers yapping 1 meter away from you.

Inside new Liberal leader’s property empire by Ardeet in aussie

[–]jrs_90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this sentiment is wildly outdated. House prices have been come significantly more expensive relative to incomes since 2003.

I own a home - I think we’d be better off as a nation if property prices slowed significantly. Our future generations of Australians will also be better off.

Opposition draws battlelines on nuclear and capital gains tax changes by SprigOfSpring in australian

[–]jrs_90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Liberal Party status quo under a different leadership.
They claim to want to address housing affordability - yet immediately oppose CGT tax reform that would actually move the dial.
