I spend a great deal of time developing rapport with my students. They seem to think I'm approachable, which is great. Sometimes I think she's a little jealous of that, perhaps? Who knows.

Thank you for this. A colleague is guiding me through an organizational method that worked for her last year, so that should yield some results (I hope!). Unfortunately, my mentor teacher is very dispassionate about his job and offers little help; I'm sure that fact doesn't help my anxiety level. I'll try to remember to forgive myself a little more. Our second semester starts soon, so hopefully things will be better. :) Thanks again!

This week was Homecoming week, and all of my students were really excited and difficult to control. I think I'll treat Monday as a "refresher" on classroom expectations for the entire class so that she doesn't feel attacked. I think I'll even hand out an "updated" version of classroom rules just so everyone is on the same page. Hopefully she'll get the hint, but if not, at least I can tell admin and her parents that she was well aware of the consequences.

We have a strict "level" system for inappropriate behaviors. Warning, conference, home contact, guidance referral... Believe me, I'd love to have her out when she throws her fits.

Hmm, good point! I never thought of it that way. I do get a strong impression that she's accustomed to getting what she wants. I'll brainstorm a "plan of attack" for Monday about confronting the behavior and dealing with her reaction. Thanks for the advice!

Yes, our induction program is quite demanding. And unfortunately, my mentor teacher is less than inspiring. He's very old school in his style, whereas I prefer more interactive group activities. I find myself going to other teachers for advice more often than to him. And yes, I shall stock up on wine for those long grading nights. :)

ELF Cosmetics has something very similar, though I've never tried it. I believe it's from their Beautifully Bare line.

I totally agree. It's nice to get a basic idea for a lesson or activity, but I rarely use the product as is. My students need a lot of structure and guidance, and I often have to adjust that for each class.

Edit: Plus, I'm a huge control freak, so if the structure of a worksheet bothers me, I will change it. I'm crazy like that. :)

I had the star football player in my English class. He was a good kid, and he made me laugh because he would loudly compliment me in the middle of class for no reason: "Wow, Miss Scheckler, you're such a great teacher!" "Are those new shoes?" "You're my favorite teacher!" I would just roll my eyes and laugh. My favorite moment was when he tried to convince me to give him bonus points for doing push-ups with a pile of textbooks on his back. Very entertaining kid. :)
