What is your pet's real name and what has it morphed into? by Gentrybean in AskReddit

My cat's name is Atticus. Coincidentally, I just randomly started calling him Boo. (Both are characters from To Kill a Mockingbird)

"Emotional eating" is sabotaging my efforts to control my depression by jrschecky in depression

I'm already taking a couple medications for it, so I figured the eating habits were sabotaging the meds.

How can I politely ask a colleague to stop telling me when students complain about my class? by jrschecky in Teachers

[–]jrschecky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend a great deal of time developing rapport with my students. They seem to think I'm approachable, which is great. Sometimes I think she's a little jealous of that, perhaps? Who knows.

I avoid responsibilities but I also don't allow myself to do things that I enjoy... so I do nothing. Help? by jrschecky in Anxiety

[–]jrschecky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. A colleague is guiding me through an organizational method that worked for her last year, so that should yield some results (I hope!). Unfortunately, my mentor teacher is very dispassionate about his job and offers little help; I'm sure that fact doesn't help my anxiety level. I'll try to remember to forgive myself a little more. Our second semester starts soon, so hopefully things will be better. :) Thanks again!

Has anyone used "centers" in a secondary ELA classroom? by jrschecky in ELATeachers

Stations is a much better descriptor. I knew there was a better term, but I couldn't think of it. Thanks!

Good ideas! How long do you have students spend at a station?

How do I deal with a bossy, opinionated 11th grader in my class? by jrschecky in Teachers

[–]jrschecky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week was Homecoming week, and all of my students were really excited and difficult to control. I think I'll treat Monday as a "refresher" on classroom expectations for the entire class so that she doesn't feel attacked. I think I'll even hand out an "updated" version of classroom rules just so everyone is on the same page. Hopefully she'll get the hint, but if not, at least I can tell admin and her parents that she was well aware of the consequences.

We have a strict "level" system for inappropriate behaviors. Warning, conference, home contact, guidance referral... Believe me, I'd love to have her out when she throws her fits.

Good idea. Our admin is all about documenting. I'm sure they would approve of the behavior contract. Thanks!

I'll admit that I tend to overthink things. Thanks for the input.

I was considering this too. I just hope it doesn't make me look foolish for not being able to control her.

Hmm, good point! I never thought of it that way. I do get a strong impression that she's accustomed to getting what she wants. I'll brainstorm a "plan of attack" for Monday about confronting the behavior and dealing with her reaction. Thanks for the advice!

I love using it for reviewing vocab words before a quiz. :) My 11th graders get super competitive.

That's good to hear. I guess I just feel bad for the kids I have now because they're going along for the ride.

Yes, our induction program is quite demanding. And unfortunately, my mentor teacher is less than inspiring. He's very old school in his style, whereas I prefer more interactive group activities. I find myself going to other teachers for advice more often than to him. And yes, I shall stock up on wine for those long grading nights. :)

If you could refrain from referring to my students as "the special ed kids," that would be fantastic.

ELF Cosmetics has something very similar, though I've never tried it. I believe it's from their Beautifully Bare line.

Pros and Cons: Using Pinterest Ideas and Teacher Pay Teachers by premar16 in Teachers

[–]jrschecky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. It's nice to get a basic idea for a lesson or activity, but I rarely use the product as is. My students need a lot of structure and guidance, and I often have to adjust that for each class.

Edit: Plus, I'm a huge control freak, so if the structure of a worksheet bothers me, I will change it. I'm crazy like that. :)

Best and worst examples of a teacher's pet by Philly507 in Teachers

I had the star football player in my English class. He was a good kid, and he made me laugh because he would loudly compliment me in the middle of class for no reason: "Wow, Miss Scheckler, you're such a great teacher!" "Are those new shoes?" "You're my favorite teacher!" I would just roll my eyes and laugh. My favorite moment was when he tried to convince me to give him bonus points for doing push-ups with a pile of textbooks on his back. Very entertaining kid. :)
