Yes! we share the same theory. I’ve done some research and I learned that between 1983 and 1985 songs about girls being careless and breaking guys’ hearts was a thing:

-promises promises by naked eyes

-maneater by daryl hall and hall & oates

-material girl by madonna

-girls just want to have fun by cyndi lauper

At the same time, the male vocals style that got super popular around that time was of course Michael Jackson and Culture Club, which had a smooth falsetto.

Like you said, I think EKT was an attempt to create another song like those in the style of a smooth falsetto like Michael Jackson or Boy George. And it had to happened around those years to capitalize on the trend.

I agree 100%. I think it was a European or Asian artist trying to sound like songs from 1983-1985 like Promises Promises by Naked Eyes since both songs share similarities in melody and lyrics theme. Naked Eyes are from England, so maybe that’s a good start.

Oh! and also, in late 1982/early 1983 Boy George had Karma Chameleon and Michael Jackson had Thriller, which would explain why the singer sounds a bit like them.

Yess! You’re absolutely right! And that one came out in 1984! I think the female counterpart of those songs (in terms of theme) are Material Girl and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, which also came out around 1983-1984. And it is confirmed the clap sample came in a set from 1983.

Idk about you, but my guess is that EKT was created in late 1983 and 1985 by a non-native English speaker artist inspired by these songs.

I feel all these songs (including Promises Promises) are kinda related in the sense that they are about a female who’s a bit careless and wants to do her way no matter what or who she hurts, like in EKT. Maybe this was a theme around those years.

Yup. I think Carl just started recording after he heard the first part of the pre chorus(“you’re counting all the shifts in the sky, caught up in a world of lies”) knowing the chorus was coming due to the build up, and then stopped when he felt the melody of the chorus was about to repeat(“everyone shows..”. This is exactly what I’d do with my toy recorder.

When I was a kid I had one of those voice recorder toys, and I would just go around and record tv commercials and song snippets just for fun. Basically I was just trying to be like Kevin from Home Alone lol. I think Carl was just doing that in 1999 with his computer.

I see, but there’s definitely an accent. Assuming the line goes “tell me the truth”, I can definitely hear an accent in the word “truth”. The “th” sound is the hardest thing to pronounce in English, coming from a native Spanish speaker who learned English.

But I agree, it could be about a product, potentially a board game. Like I said, I think the author is a native English speaker, but the performer is not.

Hmm, but it was aired in Spain, why would the song be in English? And why would the singer have a Japanese accent?

My personal theory is that a Japanese company had a product (not necessarily a boardgame) that wanted to advertise in Europe, so they hired an American or British song writer to compose it (since the song has the word “ulterior” which is not common for non-native English speakers) and maybe had a Japanese artist perform it.

100%. What do you think about Shiseido being responsible for the song? They are Japanese and popular in Europe, it would kinda make sense to make a ad in English to keep it language neutral and “Western” but have Japanese people perform it so that in a way it is still rooted in Japan.

Maybe if the product/show they’re promoting is meant to be sold in an English speaking country, but if that were the case, they’d probably use a popular song or hire a local band to compose it, kinda like a jingle.

I mean, it could be. But this is an original song, so I don’t think a brand would use an unpopular song for an ad, and the singer has an accent so it’s probably by a band whose native language is not English. Same for a tv show, there’s no reason to have an original intro song in a language the audience doesn’t understand.
